Voices opposing gun control and defending Second Amendment rights echoed from inside The Well at the Legislative Office Building last week at the second annual Sportsmen and Outdoor Recreation Legislative Awareness Day. Chuck Cunningham, director of political affairs for the National Rifle Association, gave the keynote address at the Jan. 25 event and emphasized his stance against what he described as New York's strict gun control laws and the NRA's commitment to the state. |

The House Republicans' first major technology initiative is about to be unveiled: a push to force Internet companies to keep track of what their users are doing.
A House panel chaired by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin is scheduled to hold a hearing tomorrow morning to discuss forcing Internet providers, and perhaps Web companies as well, to store records of their users' activities for later review by police.
One focus will be on reviving a dormant proposal for data retention that would require companies to store Internet Protocol (IP) addresses for two years, CNET has learned.

After weeks of confusion, the rules regarding firearms on campus might have been settled once and for all.
On Thursday, Rep. Curtis Oda, R-Clearfield introduced a House Bill 75, which would clarify that it is legal to openly carry a firearm on a state college campus. Oda spoke with U President Michael Young, and they came to an understanding that the U cannot ban open carry or regulate any other state firearm laws.
Oda has since removed the language from the bill, deeming it unnecessary. |

During WWII and the Korean War, many veterans acquired war relic firearms, which was a lawful practice at the time. Under current law, if the firearms were not registered with the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record during a single 30-day registration period in the 1970s, the veteran or their heir may be convicted of illegally possessing the firearm.
The Veterans Heritage Firearms Act will provide a limited amnesty for veterans who served overseas between 1934 and 1968. During the amnesty period, veterans will be able to register war relic firearms without fear of prosecution. This amnesty also extends to the veterans lawful heirs who inherited these weapons.

The shooting death Saturday of an Athens man may be ruled self-defense, according to police officials.
Officers responded to a residence in the 1800 block of Belleview Drive shortly before 2:30 p.m. and found shooting victim Gregory Bailey, 45, of Elkmont, dead outside the home.
The victim reportedly fought with his nephew, William "cordall" Bailey, and Greg cut Cordall during the altercation.
Greg reportedly refused to vacate the Belleview Drive property after Cordall Bailey grabbed a handgun and demanded that his uncle leave. Police said the arguing continued and led to the shooting death of Greg Bailey.

The so-called "Castle Doctrine" measure, which expands an individual's right to deadly self-defense, passed the Senate and House by wide margins last year, but was vetoed by Gov. Ed Rendell.
Senate sponsor Richard Alloway, a Republican, is hoping for a fast vote. "I actually spoke with leadership last week, face-to-face. And they told me that they want to move this bill quickly. They support it. It has strong support in the Senate. It passed 45-4 last year," he said. |

The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm. |

Should guns be allowed in class? It is a question brought to the forefront by two new bills which could allow for concealed weapons on Arizona college campuses.
House Bill 2001 reads, in part: "A faculty member may possess a concealed firearm on the grounds of a community college... a provisional community college... or a university... if the faculty member possesses a valid permit..."
House Bill 2014 reads, in part: "The governing board of any university, college or community college shall not enact or enforce any policy or rule that prohibits the possession of a concealed weapon by a person who possesses a valid permit..." |

"Considering that there are more than 6.2 million law-abiding citizens licensed to carry in 48 states, and that many of these people have either intervened in, or prevented crimes by their mere presence, New Jersey's position on this issue simply defies common sense," said Gottlieb. |

The NAA defends assault vehicles as essential for self-defense.
Auto safety advocates say that tens of thousands of lives could be saved annually if the president and Congress would register vehicles, require seat belts and require licenses to drive cars. "It's tough because our country's history is steeped in automobiles," said one advocate. "But with political leadership, we can rise above that, as every other civilized country in the world has done." |

Gun-control policies unleash passions. Those who advocate for firearm ownership rights argue that, in the right hands, guns reduce crime and save lives. Opponents allege that strict control is necessary to prevent access to high-powered guns that make it too easy for dangerous and perturbed individuals to kill innocent lives.
Gun ownership is a civil liberty protected by the Second Amendment of the Constitution, so it's hard to strike a balance between this right and the perils of gun violence and the rampant sale of military-style assault weapons. Approximately 100,000 shootings occur in the United States yearly. |

Police are second responders. The first responders are always we, the people, on the scene as events unfold.
The time has come to insist upon robust restoration of our right to defend ourselves, to keep and bear arms when and where arms might be needed in public places, to forestall these serious known threats to our safety.
It is time to press forward for nationally recognized right to carry and honor and respect the plain meaning of the Second Amendment. |

In the lore of the Old West, only back shooters and card cheaters carried hidden guns. Decent people carried their weapons openly.
It is a mark of profound change in public attitudes that lots of decent people today are lining up to get permits to carry concealed weapons.
...
Perhaps gun permits should stipulate that Iowans must carry weapons openly.
Ed.: Requiring permits to responsibly open-carry would almost certainly fail a constitutional challenge. |

Evergreen State gun owners who have been alarmed about questionnaires in doctors offices that inquire about guns in the home might want to check whats going on in Floridas Legislature right now, and wonder how the same matter might be handled in Olympia.
I have seen such questionnaires here in Washington State, and even written about one case down in the Vancouver area. The argument against such questionnaires is pretty straightforward: Unless a physician is also a certified firearms instructor, he/she has no business asking about guns in the home or offering advice on home firearms safety, gun storage or whether someone should even own a gun. |

As a simple remedy to their problem: I know of no place I can move to and continue to enjoy these rights. On the other hand, there are numerous places they can go to have their type system in place and running, the nearest and most convenient being Canada. Only a suggestion mind you, but wouldn't this mind set be much happier among their own kind? |
