Several members of the General Assembly say they will again try to pass legislation allowing Illinois residents to carry concealed weapons. The legislators say the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling last summer overturning a handgun ban in Washington D.C. and an endorsement of concealed carry by the Illinois Sheriffs' Association gives a boost to their efforts. Republican state Rep. Bill Mitchell says he wants concealed weapons legislation to finally get a hearing in the House.

Why gun sales are surging

By Ted Nugent

One sector of the American economy that is booming with the new administration is the absolute orgy of guns and ammunition sales... I am certain President Barack Obama wont say anything about this positive economic news.

I read more than one report of the surge of civilian firepower sales when it appeared that Obama would be elected.

Reason: Freedom lovers do not trust Obama. His choice of Eric Holder to be attorney general bolsters that distrust.

Like Obama, Holder is a gun-control zealot typical of the loony, anti-freedom wing of the Democratic Party.

Do not believe the presidents thinly veiled statements about supporting an individuals right to own guns. Rather, review these mens previous...gun-grabbing statements.

South Carolina is facing one of the worst budget crises ...The states unemployment rate is around 9.5%...
Plainly put, the state has more problems facing it right now than at any point in recent memory. So with all that on our collective plate, why does newly elected State Senator Shane Martin (R-Spartanburg) feel the most important thing he can do in a perilous time like this, is to introduce a bill that would allow concealed weapon permit holders to bring guns on school property and carry them into bars?
Leaving aside the timing of the bill, the most obvious question for me is: Why would anyone need to bring a gun on school grounds or into a bar?...

New Hampshire's top federal law enforcers say their successors should expect to see a continued rise in criminal street gangs along with the trouble they bring while the Internet is becoming more of a tool for white-collar criminals.

"Gangs, guns and drugs," is how outgoing U.S. Marshal Stephen R. Monier describes one of the greatest threats facing the state.

"The trend is more and more of the young punks and the drug dealers who are arming themselves. There are more guns out there that are owned by the criminal element than ever before," added U.S. Attorney for New Hampshire Thomas P. Colantuono...

The increase in armed robberies at corner stores, gas stations and banks often can be traced to gang or drug-related activity,

MI: When deaths are deemed justifiable, self-defense laws don't console families

...The rise in the number of justifiable homicides is part of a statewide trend that has emerged as self-defense laws in the state have grown stronger -- more freely allowing people who feel threatened in their homes or businesses to protect themselves, even if it means killing someone.

The issue also raises some big moral questions, such as whether crimes including petty theft, assault and even armed robbery should really be punishable by death.
States vary in their laws for justified homicides, with some requiring that a person being threatened try to flee first...

Paul Lee's mother, Alice Rawls, said that because her son was on parole from a shooting, she believes police and prosecutors didn't give his death a second glance.

A behind-the-scenes tug of war has been going on between the states police chiefs and gun ownership advocates over how local departments should decide who is allowed to carry a concealed firearm in public.

For more than a year, members and volunteers with the Citizens Rights Action League Rhode Island, a group of gun-rights supporters, have been showing up in police stations across the state, demanding to see the individual departments standards for deciding who gets a concealed-weapons permit.

Police departments were required to develop such policies under the terms of a 2002 Superior Court decision in a suit brought by Smithfield resident James W. Archer, head of the gun-rights organization.

According to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Texas is tied for 27th among the 50 states in strength of gun laws...with the many stereotypes of the Lone Star State that are ignorantly accepted as fact by a significant part of the country, that ranking seems low...
The Brady scorecard,...cited Texas in several categories:

No state restriction on the sale or possession of assault weapons..

Gun dealer regulations..

Gun show loophole..

Shoot first..Shoot first. "The state does allow the use of deadly force as a first resort in public. This dangerous law permits the average citizen to bypass our entire justice system by permitting him or her to assume the role of police officer, prosecutor, judge, and executioner."

Many West Virginians enjoy a peaceful existence, free from the violent crimes that plague big cities.

But police and activists say West Virginias few, if any, firearm restrictions can attract profit-minded inner-city drug dealers who bring their narcotics and inner-city violence with them...
Paul Cross, resident agent-in-charge of the federal (BATFE)... explained what often attracts drug dealers from big cities to West Virginia and other southern states. In this region, guns are more plentiful...

Cross explained the illegal drug and firearms trades are simply based on supply and demand, plus profit margins. New York has the drugs. West Virginia has the guns. Some want to make a profit.

An Arizona man who has waged a 10-year campaign to stop a flood of illegal immigrants from crossing his property is being sued by 16 Mexican nationals who accuse him of conspiring to violate their civil rights when he stopped them at gunpoint on his ranch on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Trial continues Monday in the federal lawsuit, which seeks $32 million in actual and punitive damages for civil rights violations, the infliction of emotional distress and other crimes.

He said he carried a pistol during his searches for the immigrants and had a rifle in his truck "for protection" against immigrant and drug smugglers, who often are armed.

The city of Virginia might sell a vintage Tommy Gun as a way to blast away at expected budget problems.

Police Chief Dana Waldron says no one's sure when the city took possession of the Thompson submachine gun. The weapon went into production in 1921 and was popular with Prohibition-era gangsters.

But the chief thinks it could fetch up to $25,000. He suggested selling it after the City Council asked for suggested savings to offset expected state cuts in local government aid.

Mayor Steve Peterson isn't crazy about the idea. He says the city has a tendency to make decisions it later regrets and suggests building a display case for the gun at Virginia City Hall.

He interviewed the March Representative Skip Coryell on 8 Feb. 2009. We have over a year to plan and get everything in order. It's going to be huge, but we still need to get the word out. This is something that is a long time coming. Finally we will be heard.

When someone displays a gun,..."You have to lean toward it being real. More than likely, if someone were to pull such a weapon the officer would draw their own and quite possibly return fire."

The rules of engagement for law enforcement are such the officer does not have to wait for the other side to fire first.

"By then, it may be too late,"... "You may never get the chance."

Rather, all that is required is for the officer to believe that any reasonable person would feel their lives or safety is in jeopardy.

Toy guns make it harder. While some have tips that are painted orange, McAllister noted some real guns also have orange tips to make the sights easier to see.
Some criminals may even paint the tips of the guns orange...

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. New York rather than one conservative swath outside Albany, she has described her shift on hot-button issues like illegal immigration and gay marriage as a broadening of her position...But in the 20th Congressional District, which first sent Ms. Gillibrand to Washington in 2006, many are taking it as an abandonment of the principles that persuaded them to support a Democrat in this predominantly Republican area.

I dont think its right when you say one thing and do something else, said Michelle Boyea, 44...But Ms. Gillibrand has softened some of her positions in the weeks since her appointment...

And she let Senator Charles E. Schumer... reassure downstate voters that she would evolve on gun control, too.

One of the main reasons for the right to keep and bear arms is the idea that if a violent criminal attacks you, you have a right to defend yourself. Statistically, most cases of self defense end without a shot being fired. Sometimes, however, the victim of the attack has no choice but to use deadly force, which can lead to the death of the attacker.

With the increase in concealed carry licenses being issued as more and more states adopt shall issue licensing laws, more and more citizens are choosing to take responsibility for their own safety and are prepared to defend themselves. This naturally leads to an increase in justifiable homicides as victims who would otherwise end up dead are instead able to shoot their attacker.

OK, let's follow the logic here. You're a gun grabber and you know you can't ban all weapons at once. Oh, no, much too big of a bite. Elmer Fudd might be upset, and he votes Democrat. So your announced priority is to ban semi-automatic rifles of military utility, like the AR-15/M-4 clones and the evil AK-47 copies. These are weapons with large magazines, yes, but also relatively low-powered cartridges.

Now, you pass a law to ban these weapons in the expectation that people will turn them in. So, OK, let's say, for the purposes of argument, they defy expectation and turn in their evil "assault weapons" without violence.

Becky Heller found a sure-fire way to overcome her fear of guns. She learned to use one. Heller, 48, of Champaign, her husband Eric, also 48, and her daughter, Erica, 19, are recent graduates of a handgun safety class taught by National Rifle Association certified instructors Jon Maier and Bruce Bohall at Darnell Gun Works & Ranges, just west of Bloomington. Another class will be Feb. 21 and 22. Maier and range owner Ron Darnell said the Hellers are part of a tidal wave of new gun enthusiasts who have shot gun sales to new heights since the election of President Barack Obama.

Jefferson City, MO - Last year, two-thirds of Missouri domestic violence murders were committed with guns, according to a recent study, and advocates against domestic violence say it's time to get guns out of the hands of offenders. At present, a police officer cannot legally confiscate a weapon at the scene of a domestic violence crime; Lisa Weingarth, development director with Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, says that needs to change. She's supporting a bill pending before the Missouri Senate to restrict gun possession and ownership by domestic violence offenders.

"People who beat their wives or girlfriends have proven that they're not fit to have the responsibility of owning a gun,...

Richmond lawmakers have callously rejected a gun control proposal sought as a memorial to the 32 students slain in the Virginia Tech massacre. Once more, state senators proved more beholden to the gun lobbys propaganda and campaign money than to public safety.
The measure, sought by Gov. Tim Kaine after the 2007 campus spree, would have reined in the unfettered sales of lethal weaponry from backwoods to battlefield guns at weekend sportsmens shows....The Senates retreat from gun controls was compounded by its repeal of another worthy Kaine priority a ban on people swaggering into bars with concealed weapons and make-my-day fantasies.
They also made clear the need for a federal law to bypass...and to close gun-show loopholes.

When New York Gov. David A. Paterson appointed Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the U. S. Senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, anti-gunners came out of the woodwork. They were incensed that Gillibrand had the endorsement of the National Rifle Association and a 100 percent rating with the organization. Gillibrand, a Democrat, is considered a right winger in a predominantly rural district. She comes from a family of hunters and has vowed to protect their gun rights. Yet she is being demonized for her association with the NRA, which has been portrayed as a radically right organization insensitive to the death toll from firearms. In truth, the NRA, founded in 1871, is one of the oldest civil rights organizations in the nation.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is being treated for pancreatic cancer. While Americans pray for her recovery, this sad news is a sobering reminder that President Obama is likely to appoint several justices to the U.S. Supreme Court. And in the aftermath of last years landmark decision on the Second Amendment, gun owners need to zero in on what these events mean for the future of the right to bear arms...
This is a reminder that one of the most consequential things a president does is appoint federal judges, especially those to the Supreme Court. All federal judges serve for life, and they wield the power to authoritatively interpret and apply the Constitution as the supreme law of the land...

The gun laws in Iraq have evolved over the last few years. During the height of the...killing, both American and Iraqi soldiers allowed families one Kalashnikov or other weapon for their protection. In reality, families often kept many more weapons, tucked away in closets, buried in their yards or hidden under floorboards. Over the last year, as the security in the country has stabilized, there has been an attempt to enforce stricter gun laws. Technically, every Iraqi citizen carrying a weapon is supposed to have a permit, although, of course, many Iraqis have held onto their weapons without permission...The police on every corner are testament to the fact that despite efforts to limit lawlessness, violence is an ever present threat.

The Interfax news agency says Russia is allowing some law enforcement officials to carry imported guns for self defense.

The ruling is unprecedented in Russia, which is proud of its arms-making traditions.

Interfax says in its report Monday that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed a document Jan. 31 allowing prosecutors and investigators with the prosecutor's office to use the Italian-made Beretta-92, Czech CZ 75 and Austrian Glock 17 pistols
The Cabinet's press service could not immediately confirm the report.
Russian prosecutors previously could carry only Makarov pistols. The Russian-made pistols have been a standard weapon with the nation's military and law-enforcement agencies since the 1950s.

A two-decade-old state law that grants authorities the power to seize property used in a crime is wielded by some agencies against people who are never charged with, much less convicted, of a crime.

Law enforcement authorities in this East Texas town of 1,000 people seized property from at least 140 motorists between 2006 and 2008, and, to date, filed criminal charges against fewer than half.

Tenaha Mayor George Bowers, 80, defended the seizures, saying they allowed a cash-poor city the means to add a second police car in a two-policeman town and help pay for a new police station. Its always helpful to have any kind of income to expand your police force, Bowers said.

NY: Why Democrats Need Not Fear Gillibrand

Instead of expressing disappointment with Gillibrands selection, we should be excited with the prospect of shaping our new senator into a strong progressive voice.
As Democrats, we do have concerns about several aspects of Gillibrands record, notably on immigration, Iraq, and guns...
Perhaps the most disquieting element is Gillibrands record on guns. While in Congress, Gillibrand was a strong supporter of gun rights for the hunters of her district. It is hard to imagine, though, that these hunters need the cop-killer bullets, whose ban she opposed, to shoot deer... The Activist Council of the College Democrats is currently taking on a persuasion campaign to bring a young, progressive message to Gillibrands forthcoming agenda.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
I have not one doubt, even if I am in agreement with the National Rifle Association, that that kind of record keeping procedure [gun registration] is the first step to eventual confiscation under one administration or another. CHARLES MORGAN, DIRECTOR, WASHINGTON DC ACLU
