You dont have to shoot someone to use a gun defensively

Dr. Steven J. Sainsbury pushes the absurd claim there are only 2,000 defensive gun uses per year. (Thinking of buying a gun for self-defense? Dont do it, Opinion, Jan. 31)

The claim overwhelmingly relies on counting defensive gun uses reported in news articles, but that is a dramatic undercount because the vast majority of successful self-defense cases dont make the news. Ninety-five percent of defensive gun uses involve merely brandishing a gun, and less than 1% involve the attacker being killed or wounded.

But most news stories only report on cases where attackers are killed and brandishings are ignored.

Supporters and opponents of a bill to drop permit requirements for concealed weapons could agree on this much Wednesday: The bill was about public safety.

But the often-emotional testimony before the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday showed there were completely different conceptions of what that safety meant.

Supporters from gun rights organizations insisted the measure, which would drop legal punishments for hiding a weapon on a person or in a vehicle, reaffirmed rights to safety, which they located in the U.S. Constitution and at times in the will of the divine.

Realistic Shooting Positions Based on Reality

Many, if not most, multi-day shooting classes will broach the subject of shooting from different non-standard positions. Like much else, I believe this has simply become a sort of dogma that is well ingrained in firearms training. Some of this may be useful, much is simply range theatrics.

When we reference non-standard shooting positions we refer to, essentially, any body position other than a traditional standing position. Such non-standard positions that are taught will be sitting, kneeling, supine, prone, urban prone, and other variations. The thought is that one may find themselves in a variety of positions other than a standard standing position when in a fight.

The Anti-gun Laws That Make Progressives Uneasy

Gun cases pull progressives in opposite directions. They generally favor the strict gun-control laws that prevail in many liberal jurisdictions, commonly advocating even stricter laws meant to reduce gun possession and crime. Yet they are also sharply critical of laws that yield long prison sentences disproportionately for men of color and cut against reformers push to reduce mass incarceration. And anti-racist ideology offers no simple answers about how aggressively to prosecute gun cases. Which should a D.A. opposed to racial inequity prioritizethe disproportionate rate at which Black and Latino residents are arrested for possessing firearms, or the disproportionate burden gun violence and deaths impose on those same communities?

Who is 'self-defense' defending?

None of what follows is intended to denigrate the inviolable right of self-defense or of Rittenhouses criminal trial. The legal system worked. He had his day in court and was cleared of any criminal negligence. But it must be asked: Was self-defense as a basic right strengthened or diluted? Was self-defense broadened as a legal fig leaf that leaves unaccountable virtually any and all reckless behavior?

This globally publicized exoneration now takes its place among other worrisome trends seemingly expanding self-defense to allow armed citizens to pick a fight or to jump into a raging fight they had no civic duty to join.

Prosecutors and police say Senate Bill 666, a proposed self-defense bill, would make murder legal in Missouri. However, the state senator behind it says its being used in other places already.

Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams spoke out for the first time about senate bill 666 at the city council Monday.

If that legislation was to pass in its current form I dont see any positive coming out of it, the chief told KY3 the next day.

Last month, on the day of Bruce's scheduled hearing to determine whether the case would be dismissed or go to trial, prosecutors unveiled an argument to circumvent the new law by seeking to have the case classified as a case of domestic violence.

Exceptions to HB227 include cases in which an individual is accused of an unlawful use of force against a law enforcement officer and cases involving domestic violence.

While Bruce and Haney were not romantic partners, prosecutors successfully argued during a hearing on Tuesday that the two were co-habitants, a situation meeting the legal threshold to establish domestic violence as a factor in the case.

We live in an unpredictable and unreliable world these days. Many factors of life are not what they used to be, and home security is a new or renewed concern for many. Part of any home security plan should include a reliable firearm, and few hold the reputation of reliability that belongs to the revolver.

While lacking the magazine capacity of most full-size semi-auto pistols, the venerable wheel gun is virtually impossible to jam and often chambered in powerful cartridges like the .357 Magnum that put plenty of energy on target. There are many good revolvers out there to protect your home. Here are my picks for the 5 best revolvers to protect any home based on my years of experience in the firearms industry.

Today, the Washington state Senate passed Attorney General Request legislation sponsored by Sen. Marko Liias, D-Lynnwood, banning the sale of high-capacity magazines in Washington by a 28-20 vote. The bill prohibits the sale of magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds. This is the sixth session the Attorney General has proposed this legislation. Todays vote marks the first time a limit on magazine capacity has passed a chamber of the Washington Legislature.

Senate Bill 5078 prohibits the sale, attempted sale and distribution of high-capacity magazines. It does not prohibit the possession of high-capacity magazines. The bill now heads to the House for consideration.

No-knock warrants, a relic of the war on drugs, face renewed criticism after Minneapolis death

Protests in Minneapolis over the death of a 22-year-old man during a police raid have reignited debate over the role of so-called no-knock warrants.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey imposed a moratorium on the practice, in which police obtain permission to enter a premises unannounced, and often accompanied by heavily armed SWAT teams.

As a former police officer, I took part in no-knock raids. Often they offered little return my team ended up empty-handed, with no real criminal evidence. I now teach criminal justice and police ethics and have observed that the use of no-knock warrants has increasingly become a concern for those demanding criminal justice reform.

The Glock 36 combines the familiarity of all that is Glock with a powerful caliber in a very small size. The result is a strong self-defense firearm that also might just be considered a pocket cannon: A brilliant evolution in pistols from Glock, the Glock 36 packs all of the lines favorite features into a diminutive package with one heck of a punch.

This subcompact .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol carries a six-plus-one load with a single stack magazine to accomplish its barely-there dimensions. The first single stack from Glock, the Glock 36 is a true slimline subcompact.

The first officer merely pushed the juvenile to the ground, said the opinion, written by Judge Robert Gross and joined by Judges Melanie May and Jeffrey Kuntz. The juvenile was already face down on the ground when petitioner (Krickovich) positioned himself over him and hit the juveniles face once into the pavement. Petitioner had the juvenile pinned down, holding his head and neck with both hands before he released his right hand and punched him once in the head. The juvenile may have tensed his body and lifted his face from the pavement, but the video from petitioners body camera does not show the juvenile actively resisting arrest.

The Great American Outdoor Show is drawing good crowds this week at the Farm Show complex in Harrisburg.

The events sponsor the National Rifle Association has been dealing with financial and membership struggles in recent years.

Thats according to the independent publication TheReload.com, which focuses on gun related issues and analysis.

Reload Founder Stephen Gutowski says the NRAs revenues were down more than $19 million last year following legal threats from the New York attorney general and allegations of corruption against its leadership.

A Chicago man went to a neighbors house to investigate a loud noise and wound up having to use his concealed carry gun to defend his life against a man wielding a knife.

Last night shortly before 10:45 PM in the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago, a man heard a loud noise coming from his neighbors house. He went over to investigate and found a woman arguing with her 19-year-old son, who was also holding a knife. The Chicago Police Report stated that the 19-year-old appeared to be in the midst of a mental episode.

The man decided to leave, but the 19-year-old followed him. As he continued to approach him, he drew his concealed carry gun and shot the suspect, hitting him in the leg.

Governor Lamont stated clearly that an administration is not tough on crime if it is weak on guns.

Yet, roughly 70% of gun offenses in Connecticut today are not prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The overwhelming majority of all gun crimes in the state are committed by prohibited persons who are not lawfully permitted to possess a firearm.

However, the Governor spoke Monday not just about his abhorrence of illegal firearms in this state but legal as well, demonstrating his indifference between criminals and law-abiding gun owners.

It is our hope that the richness and vibrancy of our Nationa free Republic, gained at great personal risk taken by and great personal sacrifice made by the Nations first Patriots, through the American Revolution Of 1776will long be preserved.

And it is our fervent hope that the blood spilled by American Patriots in the decades and centuries since, to keep our Nation strong and true to the words set in stone in our Nations founding documents, will not have been in vain.

The quality coming out of Česk zbrojovka, which translates to Czech Armory, is renowned among competitive shooters and quickly acknowledged once casual enthusiasts get behind one of their triggers. Stateside the company, which now has Colts Manufacturing under its corporate umbrella, is more affectionately known as CZ.

Its headquartered in Uhersk Brod in the Czech Republic, where operation began in 1937. Because there were several facilities that served as the nations armories before World War II, the firms legal name is technically Česk zbrojovka Uhersk Broddifferentiating from the countrys other early gunmakers, most now long gone.
