Sun Microsystems has joined Auto-ID (funded by Procter & Gamble, Gillette, Wal-Mart, Unilever, Tesco, Target and others) to build wireless digital ID tags into everything.

People might not be comfortable walking around with items that identify themselves as medication, or pornography, or with manufacturers tracking where products go after being purchased.

"If legislators mandate mandatory tagging of firearms or ammunition, we could get both the left and right wing pissed off."

Officials would be required to post signs warning against the possession of guns on school property around that property under a bill passed by the House on Friday.

Firearms are already prohibited on school grounds and signs are supposed to be posted at building entrances. The bill passed Friday would require the posting on property boundaries and entrances to any access roads.

It seems odd that one of the first bills to hit the floor in the 2002 Legislative session was a concealed weapons bill that would change the way law enforcement grants permits to carry loaded handguns in public.

The debate about this bill started last year and was narrowly defeated. Proponents of the measure have vowed to bring it back and keep bringing it back until it passes...

You would have to pay close attention to know it, but several lives were saved recently because someone had a gun available. Yet, John Lott of Yale University found by searching a database, only four of 280 news stories mentioned that rather pertinent fact.

The debate continues in a historical quarterly this month. But the point is that emotional arguments in favor of gun control constantly run aground on the shoals of hard facts and actual events.

State Sen. Andre Bauer of Newberry, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, has worked as a substitute teacher and is being trained as a reserve deputy. "As it stands now," says, "Criminals know they can enter schools and be certain that people there are not armed. Criminals have the upper hand."

Mary Jo McInerny, head of school "safety" says the idea "fails every last one of her tests for school safety. On a scale of 1 to 100 with 100 being ludicrous, the idea is a 101."

-- Wake-up Hodges, it's an election year.

"I'm writing to alert you to an ominous, potentially tragic gap in your homeland security preparations. ... The gap exists in the millions of square miles of the U.S. that simply can't be safeguarded by federal agents, even with the aid of sophisticated technology.

"Fortunately, you have at hand the one force that can most surely close this dangerous gap: The American people." -- Aaron Zelman, Executive Director, JPFO.org

The U.N.'s upcoming "Financing for Development" conference is meant to boost foreign aid spending. To finance their scheme, the bureaucrats want to create a World Tax Organization with the power to impose global taxes.

These proposals may sound too ridiculous to be true, but the evidence can be found from the U.N. itself -- links to its report can be found at their deceivingly-named website: "FreedomAndProsperity.org"

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There are more instances of the abridgement of the freedom of the people by the gradual and silent encroachment of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpation. James Madison
