A coalition led by the National Rifle Association this week sued to stop the Biden administration's bid to regulate AR-style "pistols," an effort that could prompt the Supreme Court to finally define what is allowed under the 231-year-old Second Amendment.

While its suit is specifically aimed at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and its flip-flop on regulating and taxing guns, it has the potential to both smoke out the court on what is legal under the Second Amendment and end years of practice by federal agencies and states to make up rules that Congress is supposed to set.

As President Joe Biden continues his near-daily call for a ban on semi-automatic firearms, new research shows that he is quickly losing public support for his scheme.

In his State of the Union address, Biden again called for a ban on so-called assault weaponsthe term he and other gun-ban advocates use for common semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns owned by millions of Americans and safely used for self-defense, sport shooting, hunting and competition.

Ban assault weapons now! Biden suddenly shouted during a lull in the address. Ban them now!

The recent Supreme Court case New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen that curtailed a states ability to infringe on Americans right to carry publicly for their own defense has brought the 2nd Amendment fight back to the headlines as defenders celebrate and gun control activists plan to counter the ruling. Larry Correia, a firearms expert and successful novelist, chose this time to write a nonfiction book called In Defense of the Second Amendment, to both explain why winning this particular culture war is necessary and to dismantle arguments from the left about gun control.

The shooter pulled his own gun and shot the man. The defender has not been arrested and investigators say he shot in self-defense.

The Feb. 2 ruling by U.S. District Judge Danny Reeves resulted in the dismissal of a charge against Sherman Combs of Cynthia for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm a .357 Magnum revolver after a protective order was issued to his wife last June in Harrison County.

Reeve said the federal statute violates the Second Amendment, which says the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

He also cited a U.S. Supreme Court decision issued last year in which the court said a gun control law can only stand if it aligns with the nations historical tradition of firearm regulation.

Theyre clearly carrying out the Biden Administrations anti-gun agenda and its got to stop. The NRA is putting its full weight behind fighting this unlawful rule, Ouimet wrote.

House Bill 356, sponsored by Rep. Brandon Ler, would require companies seeking to do business with the state to disclose if they have policies that discriminate against other companies or organizations that are involved with the firearms industry or gun rights advocacy.

Emails suggest that Gov. Ron DeSantis campaign made two requests of the Tampa Convention Center, the downtown venue that hosted the governors November election night celebration: no guns and no fingers pointing at the campaign for seeking such a prohibition.

In a story first reported by the Washington Post, emails from a Tampa Convention Center employee said that the DeSantis campaign told the Florida Department of Law Enforcement it wanted weapons banned from the downtown Tampa event. The Tampa Bay Times verified those emails in which Chase Finch, safety and security manager at the convention center, also suggested the DeSantis campaign knew the request was politically tricky, given Republicans embrace of gun rights.

Gun safety bills are advancing at the Minnesota Legislature, backed by Democrats who are hoping their new control of both chambers will help them pass proposals that Republicans were able to block in recent years. The two main bills would expand background check requirements for firearm sales and other transfers, and allow authorities to temporarily confiscate guns from people in crisis under what are commonly known as red flag laws or extreme risk protection orders. Theyre moving ahead as the national debate over preventing gun violence becomes increasingly polarized.

The first case challenges Assembly Bill 173. That bill allows the state to disclose gun owners highly sensitive information to universities for research purposes. That information includes the individuals name, address, place of birth, phone number, occupation, drivers license or ID number, race, sex, height, weight, hair color, eye color, and even their social security number and types of firearms that they own. This information was gathered from law-abiding gun owners with the understanding that it would only be used for legitimate law enforcement purposes when they acquired their firearms.

HB219 defines a federal regulation as a federal law, statute, executive order, rule, or regulation that infringes upon, prohibits, restricts, or requires individual licensure for, or registration of, the purchase, ownership, possession, transfer, or use of a firearm, ammunition, or firearm accessory.

But the legislation includes so many exceptions it would do virtually nothing in practice or effect. And language in the bill will likely be a green light for state and local law enforcement to keep working with the ATF to violate the 2nd Amendment.

On Feb. 9, the House passed HB219 by a 60-13 vote.
