"It's people; there's the problem! It has nothing to do with rapid-fire military style guns or the availability of ammunition or black market firearms. For some reason, kids nowadays have no regard for life or property. I would like to know why. What's changed? Who's dropping the ball? Is it parents, teachers, our government, all of the above, what? The question is not what kids are killing each other with (gun, knife, club, car, etc.). It's why are they killing each other, period." |

"All of these seem to me to be sensible precautions that should somehow reduce gun violence."
"Yet to a large extent they do not. If you are a convicted felon who makes his money by robbing banks, selling drugs or burglary, chances are that you own a firearm. No law seems to be able to stop that." |

Third story on the page:
"Based on Supreme Court opinions, courts for years have rejected the position that the Second Amendment gives a gun-owning right to individuals. But the Bush administration informed the Supreme Court last year that it believed the Second Amendment did convey such a right. In a flurry of cases that followed, lower courts consistently rejected the administration's position, although most of those opinions were in criminal cases, not in civil suits."
------- Where did the Post reporters learn to lie with a straight face? Supreme Court cases from Dred Scott to Cruikshank to the Verdugo-Urquirdez case have mentioned an individual right to keep and bear arms. |

"Years ago, the Lewiston (Maine) Daily Sun had a front- page story that teased my curiosity. It said the police had arrested a man on Main Street and he was being held to face two charges: carrying a concealed weapon and brandishing a gun. I wrote at once to the editor to ask for details as to how this implausibly simultaneous crime was effected, but have not yet had his courteous reply." ...
"So I can't tell you how, and instead I'll relate how I obtained a permit to carry a concealed weapon and what happened after that."
"Maine's statute about concealed weapons goes back to 1820, when our basic code was drawn up with goose quills and blueberry-juice ink, and it isn't just for guns. It includes slingshots. Actually, it says 'slungshot,' meaning the Biblical kind." |

"Guns are an essential feature of the state. From 17th-century political theorist Thomas Hobbes to contemporary economist Mancur Olson, the standard economic justification for the state is that its armed agents can prevent endemic violence, thus making prosperity possible. Whether one likes the state or not, one thing is clear: a state would not be a state without armed agents to intervene at some point."
"But economics is interested in guns for reasons more directly related to individual choice. Like any other economic good, guns are part of individual preferences. Some individuals want guns and are willing to pay for them. Anything scarce that brings utility (the technical word for satisfaction or pleasure) to, and is chosen by, some individuals falls within the domain of economics. Individuals may express a preference for the state and its armed agents, but these individuals, or other individuals, may also want to own private guns." |

A local police chief, accused of taking a road rage clash too far, is defending his actions today. Daytona Beach Shores Chief Stephan Dembinsky held a press conference this morning.
Dembinsky says he took proper steps, pulling over a driver who was enraged when he thought the chief cut him off in Ormond Beach.
Police reports say driver Stephen Williamson poked the chief and tried to shut his arm in his car door, but Willamson claims the chief pushed and choked him.
The State Attorney's Office will review the complaints. |

"Take a look at Bush's speech. What do you see? It's a laundry list of goodies, isn't it? It's a list of 20 new or expanded federal programs that Bush wants implemented. What's even hysterical about this speech that, even though less initiatives were offered this year than in 2002 (he proposed 39 new programs the last time within a period of 48 minutes on TV), no one has even criticized the collectivist welfare-state thinking that fuels these programs." |
