This is about a question Donald Trump failed to answer. Granted, there are a lot of those, but this was a particularly tough one. Indeed, it was likely more difficult in its way than anything April Ryan or Lester Holt has ever asked him. But then, theyre only adults. Ava Rose Olsen is 7 years old.

Rise Now and Fly to Arms! That was Henry Highland Garnets exhortation to young black men when Abraham Lincoln finally opened the Union Army to black soldiers. A militant Presbyterian minister, Garnet had implored black Americans to fight slavery to the death. And when the opportunity came, he urged young black men to fight for the Union, despite the slights of unequal pay and a long delay before they were deemed worthy to serve.1 As a war hawk, Garnet advocated the ultimate form of political violence. But he also had a keen appreciation for the utility of private violence. He calculated that once black soldiers were armed and trained, America would be unable to deny their freedom, at least not without a good fight.

I bet a lot of deer hunters woke up this morning with a lost empty strange feeling. No more deer hunting. Surely most folks are happy to see it end but on the other hand there are those who would rather keep it going. The 10 extra days in February have helped, especially in areas where the deer are still in rut, Montgomery county included.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. According to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, however, acquiring arms has nothing to do with keeping and bearing them. This was the courts logic when it ruled in John Teixeiras case that buying and selling guns was beyond the scope of the Second Amendment.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., admitted she was "embarrassed" of not better understanding "gun violence" after touting her top ranking from the National Rifle Association on gun rights issues when she first ran for office in upstate New York. "After I got appointed, I went down to Brooklyn to meet with families who had suffered from gun violence in their communities. And you immediately experience the feeling that I couldn't have been more wrong. You know, I only had the lens of upstate New York," Gillibrand told CBS in an interview that aired Sunday.

An Associated Press report last week sounded rather shocking. State authorities conducted a raid in Los Angeles, where they seized more than two dozen guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition from a man who had reportedly been barred from owning firearms. Predictably, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra bemoaned a lack of funding and a long backlog in the states ability to collect such weapons.

An angler I know was talking about a lake where he used to fish. Crappies, as I recall. Somewhere near Bemidji. "But then the college kids found out about it, and they hit it pretty hard," he said. It was a small lake, and they fished it down until the angler quit going there. So did the college kids. They couldn't catch enough fish to make it worthwhile.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks. Thomas Jefferson, Encyclopedia of T. Jefferson, 318, Foley, Ed., reissued 1967.
