"The new board chairman of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp., parent company of the famous gunmaker, has offered to resign after reports surfaced about his criminal past."

"James Joseph Minder, 74, spent time behind bars during the 1950s and 1960s for a string of armed robberies and an attempted prison escape in Michigan."

"Other Smith & Wesson board members were unaware of Minder's criminal record until he called and told most of them Wednesday." ...

"The Michigan Department of Corrections also lists a prison escape for Minder but didn't provide any details other than it added time to his second stint in prison."

"Minder said he has turned his life around since his release and spent his professional career trying to help kids."

. . . "The assumption that violence has more often than not been a central reality about Frontier life has long been popular." ...

"As with Dodge City, the excitement in the Old West in general has been much overstated. All the big cattle towns of Kansas combined saw a total of 45 murders during the period of 1870-1885. Dodge City alone saw 15 people die violently from 18761885an average of 1.5 per year. Deadwood, South Dakota and Tombstone, Arizona (home of the O.K. Corral), during their worst years of violence saw four and five murders respectively. Vigilante violence appears to not have been much worse." ...

"The U.S. government's controversial airline passenger-screening system remains flawed and behind schedule, according to a congressional report released on Thursday."

"The system would check passengers' utility bills, mortgage payments and other private records in an attempt to weed out potential hijackers."

"Originally scheduled for a November 2003 roll-out, the Department of Homeland Security now does not know when it will have the Computer Assisted Passenger Profiling System II ready, congressional investigators at the General Accounting Office found."

"Researchers have had difficulty obtaining passenger data from airlines to test the system, the GAO said in a report. The agency also still must take steps to prevent misuse of that data, the GAO said."

"A Maumee cop is off the job tonight. He was fired this morning. The Maumee police chief says the officer pulled his loaded gun on several other officers, over the course of a few months. The sticking point in this case is this: Maumee police tell us the officer never pulled out his gun in anger. They say it was all in fun. But it is simply against police policy to do what he did."

Oh, yeah, it's all in good fun. A police officer treats his weapon like a toy, but we're supposed to rely on him to protect us?

"A state Senate committee is questioning a bill that would give nearly blanket immunity to gun owners whose weapons are used in crimes. It would be one of the broadest immunity laws for gun owners in the nation. Under the bill, the only gun owners liable for lawsuits would be those who give their weapon to someone else, knowing that person is going to commit a crime. Supporters say it's not fair for gun owners to be held accountable when a criminal breaks into a house and steals a gun later used in a crime. Opponents of the bill say it would allow gun owners to be negligent with their weapons and still not be held accountable." ...

A Miami-bound flight returned to the Turks and Caicos on Thursday after the flight crew discovered a passenger carrying a loaded handgun, police said.

Liz Williams, who owns and operates an airport gift shop, said she accidentally carried her gun onto the American Airlines Flight 464 without declaring it, according to police.

Williams alerted flight attendants just after the plane took off from the Caribbean island, and was questioned by police upon returning to Providenciales.

Police did not immediately file any charges against her.

After a three-hour delay, the flight took off again for Miami.

"He's the chairman of one of the largest gun manufacturers in the country -- and his company is on the verge of getting blanket immunity from civil litigation." ..

" 'Only in the NRA's America can a company chaired by a one-time violent hoodlum be on the verge of being given a license to behave negligently, which is what the United States Senate is close to doing," said Mike Barnes, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March."

-------
Isn't it just like the Brady bunch to take advantage of a man's long-ago past, use it to promote their agenda about an issue that has nothing to do with said past and blame the NRA.

1 - The NRA doesn't support criminals or criminal activity

2 - Minder has led a clean life for years.

3 - The lawsuit exemption bill would protect legitimate businesses from warrantless attacks by the likes of Brady and her band of vultures, not give them blanket immunity from wrongdoing.

"We're glad two gun bills have ended up in the legislative round file. One would have tinkered with gun-show background checks. The other would have scrapped Colorado's concealed- weapons law and replaced it with a general right to carry."

KABA Note: Sure. God forbid the state actually allow its citizens to exercise their constitutional rights. We can't have that!

"Three of the guns used by the teen killers were bought at gun shows. A fourth weapon had been legally purchased at a gun show but illegally wound up in their hands."

"Siding with gun-rights advocates, the Virginia Senate yesterday rejected efforts to extend on-the-spot police checks to people who buy firearms at gun shows."

"Sen. Henry L. Marsh III, D-Richmond, said his measure, which was defeated 24-15, would help cut gun crime in violent cities, such as his. He urged senators to put the 'safety of our community' ahead of the interests of firearms proponents."

-------
What the disingenuous Mr. Marsh won't say is that Richmond has some of the toughest gun laws in Virginia, that it's the home of Project Exile and that it's crime-ridden to the core. What he also won't mention is that less than 2 percent of criminals who use firearms obtain them at gun shows, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.

But, hey, why bother with facts when spewing emotionalist rhetoric to push your insidious agenda?

"Mitchell was working the counter, waiting on a man. Shane, as he often does, walked in, approached his mom as she counted out change and wisecracked, 'Hand over your money, lady.' "

"In her best wry-mom tone, Mitchell said, 'Oh, knock it off, Shane.' "

"To which the customer responded: 'You better watch it. I am armed.' "

"Mitchell says she laughed. The man didn't." ...

"Mother and son shared a good chuckle, and then a bit of a chill. 'We were flabbergasted at his audacity and his anxious attitude to let us know he was packing heat. We pretty quickly realized it could have gotten out of hand. This was a joke, but what if that guy had suddenly decided to defend me by shooting my son?' "

-------
Paranoia run rampant in this one. Notice that the customer who was carrying concealed didn't draw or brandish his weapons. Notice that he warned the young man in a serious manner. Notice that he didn't overreact or shoot him on the spot.

Chances are this woman would have been kissing his shoes had she been dealing with a real criminal and the man used his firearm to defend her.

"A bill that recently passed out of the Illinois Senate Judiciary Committee is being described as an 'acid test' for legislators on the issue of the right to self-defense."

"Earlier this week, SB2165 cleared the Judiciary Committee with strong bipartisan support. The bill, introduced by Sen. Ed Petka (R-Plainfield), provides a person with an affirmative defense against violations of local gun bans if that person uses a banned gun to defend themselves or others against an aggressor."

"Petka introduced the legislation in response to a recent self- defense shooting in Wilmette, ILL. In that incident, a homeowner shot and wounded a late night intruder in his home. Subsequently, the homeowner was arrested for violating Wilmette's ban on handgun ownership. The homeowner's controversial arrest sparked a nationwide protest."
