I read the recent reports involving accidental discharge of firearms. My heart goes out to the boys and their families. Thankfully, further tragedy was avoided in both events. As a firearms safety instructor, I wish to take this opportunity to state that by following these all-important rules of firearm safety, which everyone should learn early in life, such traumatic incidents can usually be avoided altogether. |

Gun violence is the scourge of Philadelphia. The situation here has become so dire that in late January, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence released a report in Philly entitled "Shady Dealings: Illegal Gun Trafficking from Licensed Gun Dealers." Thanks to the Bush administration and a Republican-controlled Congress that was heavily influenced by the National Rifle Association for the past decade, our federal gun laws have become so shoddy that only gunrunners could be prosecuted in these cases. The dealers who supplied these weapons continue to go unpunished, and cities like Philadelphia have been left to fend for themselves. |

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Cleveland Municipal Court has launched a program that they think will help clear up some 25,000 outstanding warrants and get guns out of criminal hands. The scheme calls for known, wanted criminals to walk into a police station, turn in a gun, and walk out without posting bail for their outstanding warrants.
Far be it from us to rain on anyone's parade, but we thought it would be helpful to point out a few problems with this idea. |

Cases like Monday's mall shooting in Salt Lake City always bring conversations about gun control. One Texas senator says state law does not go far enough in allowing you to protect yourself.
...
The saying goes that a man's home is his castle. But as the law stands now, if someone is breaking into your home, you cannot use excessive force to protect yourself. So if a robber has a knife, and you shoot him, you could be charged. |

Joanie Beise has lived in a house with guns for the nearly 34 years she's been married, but only recently has she considered arming herself.

DENVER (AP) - The House approved a bill Monday that would expand Colorado's "Make My Day" law to say people who use deadly force to protect themselves in their businesses cannot be prosecuted.
The "Make My Day" law currently protects the use of deadly force in self-defense only in homes. |

The North Dakota House narrowly approved a measure Monday to allow homeowners greater latitude in using deadly force on intruders.
Known as the “Castle Doctrine,” the measure removes the homeowner’s legal duty to either retreat or try to force an intruder to retreat before using deadly force.
It passed 50-44 after a long, lively debate on the House floor and will now be considered by the state Senate. |

The House approved a measure Monday that would let gun owners carry their firearms anywhere in their vehicles, despite objections from critics who said it could put police officers and children at risk.
The measure allows gun owners to keep their firearms "where they feel is the safest place for their personal protection" by erasing the law requiring that they be placed in a car's glove compartment or console, said state Rep. Tim Bearden, the bill's sponsor. |

A third mayor has bowed out of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun mayors' coalition, saying he is in favor of disarming criminals, but "not at the risk of losing our Constitutional freedom."
SAF learned from the staff at Gun Week that Rio Rancho, NM Mayor Kevin Jackson has withdrawn from Mayors Against Illegal Guns, without having attended a single meeting of the group, which now reportedly involves more than 150 mayors. |

Next to the cash register of the Bob Moates Sport Shop in Chesterfield County, near the tanks of live bait, is a sign telling customers about the Bloomberg Gun GiveAway.
For every $100 that customers spend at the sporting goods and Civil War-relics dealership, they get one ticket for a chance to win a gun in a drawing held by the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Unfortunately, Mayor Giuliani quickly proved that he does not understand the Second Amendment. In a feeble attempt to justify his gun control measures, Rudy said that what he did as Mayor “did not affect hunters.” My apologies, Sir, but you need to re-read your history books and the Constitution you swore to uphold. The innate right to bear arms protected by the U.S. Constitution and almost all state constitutions has absolutely nothing to do with hunting. The need for individual firearm ownership is far more important and is easily discernible from the constitutional language itself. |

With a ban on assault weapons set to take effect in Cook County, Ill., on Monday, the county's board of commissioners has rejected a novel approach to dealing with a $500 million budget deficit -- an attempt to impose a tax on bullets. Commissioner Roberto Maldonado, who proposed the plan at a county board meeting on Feb. 6, told Cybercast News Service on Friday that while the amount of money it would have raised -- about $735,000 per year -- was "very small," the ordinance would have re-affirmed "that we are an anti-gun, anti-violence type of community." |

Last week the Utah Legislature proposed a bill that would serve as a compromise between the groups lobbying for and against gun rights on college campuses in Utah. The bill, sponsored by Sen. Greg Bell, R-Fruit Heights, would allow students who live in the dorms to choose if they wanted roommates who carried concealed weapons. It would also allow members of the faculty to decide if they wanted to allow guns into their offices. |
