"In fairness, the online edition of The New York Times did post a Reuters filing on Feb. 11, but nothing from The Times staff. Funny thing though. I just got back from my hometown library, where they have a subscription to the national edition of The Times, and I couldn't find the story in their print edition. I looked through copies from Wednesday, Thursday and today." |

Whether the triple homicide in North Carolina was triggered by a parking dispute or by a hatred of Muslims or both, this is certain:
The murder weapon was a handgun.
Without the gun, there would have been no triple funeral on Thursday for 23-year-old Deah Shaddy Barakat and 21-year-old Yusor Mohammad and 19-year-old Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha. |

Well, it was nice while it lasted. One hundred and three years ago on Saturday, Arizona joined the United States of America.
This week, the Arizona Legislature began work on phase one of its grand scheme to secede from the union. To declare that we have certain unalienable rights and that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of kooky laws that will not only make us a laughingstock on late-night TV but land us in court. |

Supporters of tighter gun controls are testing a new approach in their battle to cut firearm deaths: adding gun curbs for people linked to domestic violence.
A pending bill in South Carolina would require someone convicted of a domestic-violence charge to turn in his or her firearms to the county sheriff. Legislation proposed in Arizona would prohibit someone charged with domestic violence from possessing a gun while out on bail. A measure in Missouri would add dating partners to those covered by domestic-violence laws and the gun bans that attach to them.

A Lewis County gun range is one of a dozen plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit seeking clarification to sections of Initiative 594, a measure passed by Washington voters that requires expanded background checks for firearm purchases.
The Firearms Academy of Seattle, Inc., has operated a shooting instruction business with a range in Onalaska since 1995.
According to the lawsuit filed Dec. 30 in federal district court in Tacoma, the academy cannot determine whether temporary transfers at the range are exempted by I-594, which requires background checks for gun sales and transfers. |

A statewide sportsmen's group has offered to pay for Conoy Township's now-famous gun rights-boosting road signs.
The Unified Sportsmen of Pennsylvania has stepped up to pay the nearly $900 price tag for 14 new road signs that state "Welcome to Conoy Twp: THIS IS NOT A GUN FREE ZONE."
The township received national and international attention, and both praise and criticism, over the signs, designed to warn would-be criminals that residents are likely to own guns. Four were spray-painted shortly after being installed on Feb. 4 and 5. |

The 2015 Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act has been officially introduced in the Senate and if passed would treat concealed carry permits like driver's licenses, allowing citizens to travel from state-to-state with their permits recognized. As a result, it will be easier for citizens traveling across state lines to avoid being unfairly charged or prosecuted for exercising their Second Amendment rights. |

There's a lot to mock in the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission draft report (PDF), up for final changes today. Overall, the document serves as the unintentional basis for a medicalized remake of the movie Brazil, with its control-freakery, including fortified public schools, unenforceable gun bans, and scrutinized home-educators, justified under the umbrella of a mental health security state. If a new government agency is entrusted with the implementation of the report's recommendations, its logo should certainly feature an image of riot cops in hospital scrub-based uniforms strapping some unfortunate to a gurney surrounded by the motto, "It's For the Good of the Community." |

Coming off legislative victories in recent years, gun-rights advocates pushed Kansas lawmakers Thursday to allow the state's residents to carry concealed firearms without requiring them to obtain a permit.
The Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee had a hearing on a bill to expand concealed carry to anyone in Kansas who can legally own a gun. The panel took no action, but its chairman promised a vote, and several members made comments supporting the measure. |

Thursdays progress (to full Senate) of the two bills Senate Bill 11, which would lift a ban on concealed handguns on university campuses, and SB 17, which would allow license holders to carry holstered handguns in public was all but pre-determined, but it did not happen without debate. Senators Judith Zaffirini , D-Laredo, and Rodney Ellis, D-Houston the committees two Democrats did what they could to sway the majority, asking for chancellor references, invoking Ku Klux Klan imagery, and asking specifically about the potential for racial profiling. (Sen. Craig Estes, R-Wichita Falls, the author of SB 17, did not foresee that being a problem.) |

Saying people have a God-given right to defend themselves, a House panel voted Thursday to let people with concealed weapon permits take their guns into public buildings.
HB 2320 would overturn existing law which says that a public agency can ban firearms simply by posting a sign and making lockers available for people to put their guns in.
Instead, buildings could be kept gun-free only by ensuring that all people are disarmed. That would require government agencies to install metal detectors and security guards at all entrances. |

A crowd of Second Amendment rights activists, survivors of gun violence, students, concerned parents, and law enforcement officers showed up at the Texas Capitol on Thursday to give lawmakers their views on two high-profile gun bills.
After a hearing that lasted almost eight hours, the Senate State Affairs Committee passed bills that would lift a ban on concealed handguns at university campuses (Senate Bill 11) and allow license holders to carry holstered handguns openly (Senate Bill 17).
Both measures passed 7-2, with the committee's two Democrats voting against, and now proceed to the full Senate. |

The defendants in the second amendment lawsuit against Deleon Guerrero in the Northern Mariana Islands have come up with a novel defense. This is not too surprising, as they have very little to use.
They claim that the U.S. district Court for the Northern Mariana Islands does not have jurisdiction over the second amendment in the Islands. |
