Attorney General John D. Ashcroft announced plans yesterday to curb gun purchases by illegal immigrants and criminals while streamlining transactions for legal gun buyers.
Ashcroft ordered the FBI and the Immigration and Naturalization Service to revamp their computer systems to identify noncitizens who try to buy firearms through federally licensed gun dealers. |

United Press International (UPI) has not exactly been friendly to gun rights over the years, but on the heels of Kmart�s announced bankruptcy filing in January, UPI carried a news item that seemed a bit surprising.
The UPI report suggested that a boycott of the department store chain by �Pro-Second Amendment activists... because of the vocal anti-gun activity of Kmart spokesman (sic) Rosie O�Donnell� had an impact on Kmart�s collapse. |

Lt. Gov. Dick Posthumus delivered a message to criminals Wednesday: mandatory jail time for illegal firearms.
Posthumus unveiled his Michigan Exile program, which would help put felons and violent juveniles behind bars for up to five years for possession of guns or ammunition. The plan calls for a mandatory one-year jail term for anyone illegally in possession of a firearm. |

Several residents have told the Palatine Village Council that they oppose the village's plan to draft an ordinance requiring home-based gun dealers to have a local business license.
A village committee recently recommended that the village draw up an ordinance that would compel gun dealers to obtain a license, just like seamstresses, child-care workers, beauticians and other home-based businesses. |

Attorney General John Ashcroft moved Wednesday to accelerate background checks on gun buyers and directed that $141 million be spent to upgrade criminal-history records used to perform the checks.
However, Ashcroft insisted that law enforcement is 'prohibited' from using the records to investigate the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington.
"For us to contravene that would be inappropriate", Ashcroft said of the law governing the National Instant Check System. |

"A VICAR charged with firearm offences and questioned by police about allegations of indecent assault said today he had done nothing wrong.
"Mr Daggett said he brought the gun with him, along with the rest of his possessions, when he left the US in 1986. He said: 'When I found out about the stringency of the gun laws in the UK I should have got a licence for the weapon and I regret not doing so." |

Federal, state and local "authorities" raided homes and other buildings in a large-scale drug and weapons "sweep" that led to at least 50 arrests.
Helicopters flew overhead as dozens of "agents" from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms joined state and local "police" across the town.
Residents of one neighborhood reported SWAT officers breaking down the door of one home at 6am.

The federal government will hire thousands of armed law enforcement officers in coming years to patrol the nation's airports, the new undersecretary of Transportation told USA TODAY this week.
In an interview days before the Transportation Security Administration takes responsibility for aviation security Sunday, its leader John Magaw also said he was skeptical about a 'trusted-traveler' ID card. But the administration will test the concept, possibly with members of Congress, he said. |

Earlier today, February 8, the Senate State Affairs Committee unanimously approved HB 1129, which seeks to establish reciprocal agreements to allow Right to Carry permit holders from other states to lawfully carry firearms concealed in South Dakota, and vice versa. |

In an effort to increase the use of "non-lethal" weapons on criminals, Boise police officers will begin using electronic stun guns this summer.
The canary yellow Taser M26 guns may look like toys, but they pack enough wallop to drop criminal from as much as 21 feet away, Boise Police Chief Don Pierce said.
The list of non-lethal weapons Boise police currently use includes pepper spray, batons and ammunition like bean bags and foam rounds. |

LUDINGTON, Mich. - It's not your ordinary lawn ornament. Since 1947, Henry Marek has kept a World War I-era cannon in his front yard.
Marek obtained the cannon in 1942 for $25 as scrap from the Work Projects Administration. Over the years it has become a Mason County landmark.
But a Defense Department worker happened to notice the cannon last week, knocked on Marek's door and told him that the cannon is government property. That means it could be seized and destroyed. |

Columbine parents faced off at the state Capitol Wednesday over the "issue" of handgun concealed-carry permits.
The Senate Judiciary Committee killed a bill 4-3 that would have required sheriffs and police chiefs to issue permits to qualified residents.
The committee also killed a bill 4-3 that would have restricted police chiefs and sheriffs from issuing permits to people living outside their jurisdictions. |

The Georgia Court of Appeals has dismissed a lawsuit by the city of Atlanta against gun manufacturers and trade associations, saying that only states have the right to regulate firearms.
The appeals court's ruling Wednesday overturned a lower court decision that allowed the city to sue 14 gun makers and three trade associations, alleging they are "negligent in designing, distributing and promoting firearms and fail to warn of their danger."

This year, 15 wives of House of Delegates members - most of them in stylish pantsuits - ruffled a few feathers by lining up and opening fire at a South Richmond firing range. Two delegates' husbands rounded out the House Spouses.
Booms from .357s and .45s blended with the bangs from .22s and the rattle of an Uzi machine gun as the House Spouses braved their fears and inexperience and zeroed in on the bull's-eyes at D&P Shooting Range on Midlothian Turnpike.

On Jan. 16, 2002, a law student at Virginia's Appalachian School of Law shot and killed the dean, a professor and another student, while wounding three others.
How did the shooting spree end?
According to the Los Angeles Times, "Other students tackled [emphasis added] the gunman minutes after he stalked through the tiny campus of the Appalachian School of Law where he wounded three others during the shooting spree." The New York Times also said that other students "tackled" the man.
