Switzerland upheld its reputation for having one of the most liberal yet lethal firearms laws in Europe yesterday after voters overwhelmingly rejected proposals that would have obliged some two million gun owners in the country to keep their weapons in public arsenals rather than at home. Official results from a national referendum on gun control showed that more than half of Switzerland's 26 cantons voted against an initiative which aimed to ban army rifles from households in an attempt to reduce domestic shootings and a record number of suicides involving firearms. Swiss soldiers have been encouraged to keep their rifles at home after leaving the forces under a national defence policy introduced during the Second World War. |

A veteran Eugene police officer fatally shot himself at a private shooting range Friday, the Lane County Sheriff's Office reported.
Sgt. Jerry Webber, 44, of Eugene was removing a hunting rifle from the back of his vehicle when it discharged, striking him once, said Capt. Bill Thompson, a sheriff's spokesman.
"There is currently no information to suggest that this incident was anything other than unintentional in nature," Thompson said. Deputies and medics responded to the local Izaak Walton league range southwest of Eugene about 11 a.m. on reports of the shooting. Webber was pronounced dead at the scene.
The media reported 'it went off, killing him'. "It shot him" was the jist of the wordage utilized. |

Following an emotional debate over gun control, Swiss voters firmly rejected a referendum that would have forced soldiers to end the longstanding practice of keeping army-issue firearms at home and tightened restrictions over civilian gun ownership. According to exit polls, 57% of voters rejected the initiative. The referendum sparked a heated debate over the right to bear arms in a country that has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the world. Between 1.2 million and 4.5 million firearms are estimated to be in circulation in Switzerland, putting the Alpine country behind only the U.S. and Yemen in guns per capita.

"The Legislature gave final approval Monday to a bill that would require out-of-state gun owners who seek a Utah concealed-weapon permit to obtain first a permit from their home state, if available.
"Valentine said the bill would give states control over their own residents..." [emphasis added]
----
Submitter's note: WOW, talk about an accidental admission that the permits are only about CONTROLLING us. Just wow. Not surprising that the NRA state affiliate, the Utah Shooting "Sports" Council, supports this bill. The second amendment is not about sporting purpose and never was. |

Benton County Prosecutor Andy Miller says a fatal shooting at a Kennewick home was justified as self defense. A resident, Ramon Madrigal, shot 20-year-old Tyler Stock on Jan. 11 as Stock was trying to force his way through the front door. KVEW reports Stock was carrying a handgun and wearing a blue bandanna on his face. Three other people who were with Stock that night were arrested for investigation of attempted robbery. Madrigal faces a drug charge because officers found marijuana at the home.
Ed.: That house must have be haunted for it to be self-defense to shoot it. Aren't typos fun?

"In the ongoing evolution of Wisconsin gun law, a Milwaukee County judge has ruled the state's ban on concealed weapons unconstitutional as applied to a man who had an unloaded, encased gun under his car seat three days after he had been robbed at gunpoint in the same area of the city."

Submitter's note: If we're not careful, the NRA and it's state affiliate will strap Wisconsin citizens with an expensive and insulting permit system complete with hoops to jump through. |

Neutral Switzerland is among the best-armed nations in the world, with more guns per capita than almost any other country except the U.S., Finland and Yemen. At least 2.3 million weapons lie stashed in basements, cupboards and lofts in this country of less than 8 million people, according to the Geneva-based Small Arms Survey. On Sunday, Swiss voters made sure it stays that way, rejecting a proposal to tighten the peaceful Alpine nation's relaxed firearms laws. The decision was hailed as a victory by gun enthusiasts, sports shooters and supporters of Switzerland's citizen soldier tradition. |

In seconds, thousands of Paul Reveres rev up the engines of their SUV's and race through towns, villages, and hamlets rousing the populace: "The Russians are coming." Citizens quickly grab their firearms. A hundred million guns or more are now poised for the defeat of the Russians -- hand guns, rifles, semi-automatic weapons, fully automatic assault rifles, and more. Our 21st century Continental Army is ready.
But ready for what? To shoot down nuclear missiles? Would these armed citizens serve our national defense in any useful way? Or would they pose a national defense threat and crisis? In the ensuing fear and chaos, the weapons would most likely -- as in many similar upheavals -- be used for looting, mayhem, vigilantism, and murder. |

High on their wish list is banning ammunition magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. This failed ban was in effect from 1994 to 2004; bills in Congress would bring it back and make it even more restrictive on honest citizens. These magazines are standard equipment for handguns and other firearms owned by tens of millions of Americans, just as they were before and during the earlier ban. Besides using them for self-defense, gun owners own them for competitive or recreational shooting, as key parts of collectible firearms, and for other lawful purposes. |

In Utah, it is legal for people with concealed carry permits to bring guns onto college campuses. In Arizona, there is a bill on the ballot attempting to do the same.
But in Ohio, the concealed carry law still prohibits carrying guns on campus; which means no gun is allowed anywhere on University grounds. The state legislature is not considering changing the law.
"If someone is caught with a gun, they can be charged even if they have a concealed carry permit," said Sgt. Tim James of the campus police department. "This is because the law considers it a forbidden place that is outside of the allowed area."

The Belton Community Center is a gun-free zone, meaning criminals will have guns and law-abiding citizens will be victims. After a recent shooting in the gun-free zone, it has been reported from members of the center: Its hard to believe it would happen here or Not anything youd think would happen here.
This is the problem with restricting the right of self-defense and creating these gun-free zones. Violent crime can happen anywhere.
Another member of the center stated, Its right by the police station. I feel safe about it. As shown by the shooting, feeling safe and being safe are two different things. |

Now, the neighbor has filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction barring the clubs use of their constructed shooting ranges using the argument that such use violates the safety zone laws of PA. |

So in light of ... of students' reactions to the Iowa Legislature's work to make it easier for Iowans to conceal carry, and because this is something that always crosses our minds too late in the game, we'd like to extend an open invitation to those of you who love your U.S. Constitutional Amendments to rally together to make plans now to celebrate them in style later in the semester.
For example, seeing as First Amendment Day is scheduled for April 7, that would make April 8, Second Amendment Day. Students for Concealed Carry on Campus take note. And you might consider finding out whether the ISU College Republicans would be interested in joining forces to educate and advocate for the Second Amendment on campus that day. |

I cannot remember which year it was exactly, but I know where I experienced the happiest moment of my life.
We had been for a family day out on the coast of Delaware, a couple of hours' drive from Washington, and we were coming home, tired and sand-flecked, in our huge American car.
The children were singing along to country music - Jolene by Dolly Parton, again and again and again. |

Both the Iowa firearms Coalition and the Iowa Conservative Union accuse him of using taxpayer money for a personal political campaign against the second amendment.
The chief says the program is paid for with seized assets and drug money and he doesn't deny the rights of gun owners but if a business wants to ban guns, even those with permits must oblige. |

The Arkansas Senate voted Monday to prohibit local governments from restricting or confiscating firearms during a state of emergency, a move that backers say would protect gun owners' rights during natural and man-made disasters.
The Senate voted 29-5 to approve the measure, which would bar cities and counties from enacting emergency laws "regulating the transfer, transportation, or carrying of firearms or components of firearms" after the governor declares a state of emergency. The proposal by Republican Bill Sample of Hot Springs would allow anyone who has their weapons seized to sue in circuit court to get them back.

A team of Texas A&M students will be heading to Austin to lobby state legislatures to support the concealed carry on campus bill on behalf of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. The group has yet to determine a date of departure.
Though Senate Bill 354 was rejected in 2009 by state legislatures, the issue is being readdressed. One of the primary authors is Republican Sen. Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio, who said those who carry concealed handguns on campus would hinder a shooter from acting.
The officers of the group said arming students and staff would make campus safer. |

The Florida legislatures warning shot regarding a bill that would allow guns on college campuses has caused a commotion at UF.
The University Police Department and Student Government have voiced concerns about a bill proposed in the Florida Senate that would allow those with concealed weapons permits to carry their guns on campus.
The intent of the legislation is to protect students from dangerous situations by allowing them to carry guns for self-defense.
Currently, no one with the exception of police officers is allowed to carry guns on college campuses in Florida. |

We can be certain that it never occurred to the founders that automatic weapons would be invented that could be used for armed robbery, mass murder, gang warfare, or to assassinate politicians, again and again and again, but that such weapons would be wholly inadequate to preserve "the security of a free state."
The ultimate insanity of those who support the unrestrained possession of firearms is the argument that the Second Amendment envisioned an armed citizenry to resist the potential tyranny of our own elected government. Read the amendment again: it is grounded on the idea that the Constitution itself established the "free state" that the amendment talks about preserving. |

Elements of the hour are young Egyptians contemplating the concept and language of their Constitution. As they do this, they may be approached by wiser and older persons who wish to be helpful. Some, perhaps unasked. They will have to hear the advice of elders who love freedom also and they will have to discern good advice from bad advice.
In contemplating their law of the land which will be their Constitution, they will have to see themselves as the sovereign and the government their servants. Though their Constitution could be modeled after our own, it wont be the first time. |

The Senate today passed a gun-rights bill to prohibit local governments from confiscating firearms from citizens in a governor-declared emergency, as well as legislation to bar new liquor franchises in the state.
The gun bill, Senate Bill 115 by Sen. Bill Sample, R-Hot Springs, passed on a 29-5 vote.
Sample said he intended to avert in Arkansas what happened at New Orleans in the days following Hurricane Katrina, when police went door to door and confiscated guns from citizens in an effort to counter chaos and crime in the city. |
