The US army has built a fake city designed to be used during combat training exercises. The 300 acre 'town' includes a five story embassy, a bank, a school, an underground subway and train station, a mosque, a football stadium, and a helicopter landing zone. Located in Virginia, the realistic subway station comes complete with subway carriages and the train station has real train carriages. The subway carriages even carry the same logo as the carriages in Washington DC There are also bridges and several other structures which can be transformed into different scenarios. The U.S. army's Army Asymmetric Warfare Group opened the training centre last month.

A divided federal appeals court has struck down California's concealed weapons rules, saying they violate the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said Thursday that California is wrong to require applicants to show good cause to receive a permit to carry a concealed weapon. The court ruled that all law-abiding citizens are entitled to carry concealed weapons outside the home for self-defense purposes.
The Supreme Court ruled in 2008 that law-abiding citizens can keep handguns in the home for self-defense purposes, but didn't address whether that right extends outside the home.

So, basically, state or municipal government cannot prohibit a citizen from exercising their right to carry a firearm for self-defense purposes if they dont demonstrate some arbitrary standard of good cause or justifiable need. They still can regulate the manner in which the gun is carried, but they cant deny a citizens Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. |

But AR-15s, the most popular type of guns often referred to as assault weapons, are sold in Empire State gun shops, freely and legally. The gun is being marketed by Stag Arms as a "New York-compliant AR-15," and features a slightly modified stock and no bells and whistles. The gun does not have a pistol grip, for instance - one of the features banned by the act.
"This just shows that the gun prohibition lobby uses symbolic gestures over substance to push their anti-gun rights agenda. Banning guns based on cosmetic features proves that point," Alan Gottlieb, president of the Second Amendment Foundation, told FoxNews.com. |

Monterey County Sheriff Scott Miller, who overhauled his department's concealed weapon permit process after taking office, said the ruling does not appear to affect the county's procedures.
Under previous administrations, Monterey County residents seeking a permit had to write a detailed explanation of why they needed to carry a concealed firearm. Such explanations are no longer required.
"'Personal protection' is enough to establish good cause," Miller said. "In return, we have a much more stringent screening process."
In fact, the county's background check and required psychological screening may be the most stringent in the state, Miller said.

The protests resemble efforts after a jury last year decided George Zimmerman was defending himself when he shot teen Trayvon Martin in Sanford. Last year, a variety of musicians, celebrities and politicians from Stevie Wonder to the California Legislative Black Caucus called for boycotts until Florida changed its controversial "stand your ground" law.
But such boycotts appear to have had little, if any, effect on tourism here. Gov. Rick Scott announced Friday that preliminary estimates from VISIT FLORIDA show more people visited in 2013 than ever before. Some 94.7 million visitors came, a 3.5 percent increase over 2012. |

Weve had a generation or two of lawmakers at first in both parties, then increasingly concentrated in the Democratic party who believed that the Second Amendment was optional. Increasingly, courts are informing them otherwise.
Chuck Michel, California civil-rights attorney, summed it up quite simply on NRANews.com when he pointed out whats really at issue in the legal challenge to the San Diego case, as well as the Heller case and the McDonald case challenge to Chicagos gun laws: local lawmakers persisting in calling it a regulation when what they really mean is a ban. |

"Ultimately, the political process is broken on this issue," says King, an innovation specialist with the U.S. Agency for International Development, who lives in Washington, D.C.
So, why not turn to a market-based solution?
"That is something that we see as being truly an American way forward," King, 31, says. "It's this idea that we're going to allow people to act in their own self-interest to improve the safety in their own communities." |

Gun-rights advocates and Idaho law enforcement have resolved differences over a bill that would punish Idaho police and sheriffs who help confiscate federally banned firearms. The measure, which allows lawmakers to trumpet their Second Amendment credibility, cleared the Senate State Affairs Committee Friday. That's a far cry from a year ago, when a similar measure stalled in the panel. Then, there were concerns it might complicate relationships between Idaho police and federal agencies that cooperate on drug investigations. |

Most Bay Area counties have policies similar to San Diego's. Alameda County, for example, requires an applicant to show "a documented, presently existing, clear and present danger to life, or great bodily harm" specific to the applicant or that person's immediate family. The applicant also must show that police or alternative measures can't adequately address that danger, and that issuing a permit is likely to significantly reduce the danger of harm. |

The state will accept rifle and magazine registrations from gun owners who tried to mail them in before the Jan. 1 deadline but found a post office closed early or missed the deadline for another reason.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, a Democrat, made the decision not to deny those registrations late Friday. It came after the governor consulted with Attorney General George C. Jepsen.
Gun owners had complained that post offices closed early and without notice on Dec. 31, the last day to mail in registration forms to comply with last year's gun control law. Violators could face illegal gun possession charges. |

A cook who stabbed an off-duty bouncer to death during a confrontation downtown has been released from jail after prosecutors declared that he was acting in self-defense, a decision sparked by the revelation that the man who died was also armed with a knife.
The 22-year-old San Jose man who works as a cook at a downtown restaurant may have at some point worked with 26-year-old San Jose resident Ryan Viri, who was well known in the downtown bar and restaurant scene.
Assistant District Attorney Marc Buller, who reviewed the case, said security cameras in the area recorded crucial parts of the interaction, and that the cook, who is 5 feet 9 inches tall, was reacting to the sight of an armed and advancing 6-foot-4-inch Viri. |

I am writing concerning the recent news article in which, Sean Maloney, a lawyer speaking at an NRA event gave legal advice to those contemplating the use of a firearm in a future self-defense situation.
As a former criminal defense attorney, I found his advice to be ethically flawed and, in practice, risky for one who legitimately acted in self-defense. Premeditation is the opposite of self-defense, and memorizing a rehearsed report prior to any incident smacks of premeditation. |

[UPDATE: As Daniel Schmutter pointed out, it's also possible that the Supreme Court will grant certiorari before then in the Third Circuit right-to-carry case, which involves much the same issue, Drake v. Filko. If so, then the Court will either grant in the Ninth Circuit case and consolidate the two, or it can hold on to the petition in the Ninth Circuit case pending the result in Drake, and -- if the Drake decision changes the result for the Ninth Circuit case -- send the case back down for further consideration in light of the Drake decision. In any event, whether the Court grants Drake or this case, it would likely decide the Second Amendment right-to-carry question.] |

Last month marked the 40-year anniversary of the founding of the National Council to Control Handguns, which in its early days openly admitted that it supported banning the private possession of handguns. It has since been renamed the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and while its handgun banning rhetoric is more muted, its goals are still to ban guns by any means necessary.
Since the groups formation, Americans have bought over 60 million handguns, bringing the total to somewhere around 100 million; 32 more states have adopted Rightto-Carry laws, bringing the total to 42; and, contrary to the groups predictions, the nations murder rate has decreased to a 49-year low. Thats not much for anti-gun rabble-rousers to celebrate. |

This situation is among the most bizarre we've seen in the Missouri legislature. It's unclear to us how (and why) two political arch rivals came together for a press conference to defend an amendment neither really wants.
Nasheed actually slammed Nieves' bill to the Associated Press on Tuesday, saying, "I cannot support this legislation in good conscience."
As for Nieves, he openly dislikes the Nasheed's amendment and makes no mystery of his desire to slash it from his bill. He simply wants the NRA to correct its mistake and withdraw its opposition.
"Make no mistake, I am not crazy about the amendment and am confident it will not be in the final version of the bill," Nieves wrote in an official press release yesterday. |
