"As a gun blogger and author of several firearms related books, I get a lot of questions from friends and family. These folks dont always share my views, and may disagree with my politics or ideals, or perhaps the value I place on the 2nd Amendment. They typically ask the same sorts of questions, and I thought Id address them below."
The most common question that always comes up is simply 'Why?' Why do you need 'assault weapons'? Why do you need a magazine that holds more than 10 rounds? Why do you feel you should even own those dangerous guns? The list goes on and on, but the overall tone and message is basically the same." ... |

"For better or worse, American Sniper, the film based on the life story of U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle, has prompted vibrant discussion among both supporters and skeptics of the Iraq War, where Kyle saw four tours of duty. The film has also raised questions among Second Amendment advocates and opponents alike, regarding the wisdom of open carry and even concealed handgun licenses, and if individual gun ownership is a license to carry or, to the extreme, a license to kill." ... |

"One would think that God gave us the Second Amendment. Every single political debate on gun control is prefaced by some variation of 'I believe in our Second Amendment rights' right up there with the Bible and Jesus."
"Spouting this poppycock is a necessary prerequisite to entering a debate on the subject. It is also a practical necessity for any politician running for office."
"The Second Amendment does plainly state that, 'The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' The Supreme Court has consistently ignored that modifying phrase beginning, 'A well-maintained militia being necessary;' so,we have been saddled with the interpretation that anyone can have any weapon her or she wants." ... |

"According to recent reports, a measure outgoing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder hoped would restrict Americans access to certain firearms was struck down by a federal judge."
"A Washington gun rights organization, the [CCRKBA], petitioned the court to overturn a nearly 50-year-old law prohibiting individuals from purchasing certain guns across state lines. Holder argued against repealing the Gun Control Act of 1968 ..."
"The act targeted only handgun sales, allowing the interstate purchase of shotguns and rifles. The purported impetus behind the restriction was an effort to make obtaining firearms more difficult for potential assassins or rioters." ... |

"State legislatures this week in at least two states advanced measures aimed at halting current or future federal laws affecting the Second Amendment."
"In Montana, the state House passed a bill by a 58-42 vote Monday to prohibit enforcement of new federal weapon and magazine bans in the state, sending it to the Senate for consideration. Meanwhile, lawmakers in an Arizona Senate committee gave their stamp of approval to similar but more expansive legislation in a 4-2 vote Tuesday. In each case, votes were largely along party lines with Republicans casting for and Democrats against." ... |

"I firmly support our Second Amendment rights. And I agree with your editorial that Colorados current concealed-carry system need not be dropped, as Senate Bill 32 would do, but my reasons differ."
"Your editorial uses the usual mantra of anti-gun rhetoric: 'minor but prudent safeguards,' etc. Those are issues that other laws cover. I believe that the current system actually protects concealed-weapon carriers by exposing them, during the permitting process, to rules and laws regarding the carry and use of deadly weapons. Uninformed gun owners could easily run afoul of these laws and be in big trouble." ... |

Cities, towns and counties in Idaho are not allowed to pass any laws regulating sales, ownership, possession, transfer, storage, carrying of any firearms. The state is in full control of its gun laws."

"Illinois, ruled as it is by the political power of Chicago, is not a state that comes immediately to mind as being 'pro gun.' The last state in the union to permit any form of concealed carry, and even then needing to be dragged kicking and screaming into doing so by the federal courts, and still ending up with the most restrictive 'shall issue' permitting system in the country, Illinois ensures that advances for the recognition of gun rights are always hard won." ... |

"Anyone listening to the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee public testimony for and against two Senate bills to allow the licensed concealed carrying of handguns at public colleges and the broader licensed open carrying of handguns Thursday must acknowledge that passionate, sometimes even rational arguments exist from all perspectives."
"One must admit some pretty stupid arguments also exist, mostly from obsessed gun activists, much to the chagrin of more grounded Second Amendment advocates. For instance, the right to carry a firearm is not 'god-given' but comes from the Second Amendment unfortunately, the most ambiguous of the Bill of Rights." ... |
