. . . "One balmy May evening back in 2000, Dudley [Hiibel, a 59 year old cowboy from Nevada] was standing around minding his own business when all of a sudden, a policeman pulled-up and demanded that Dudley produce his ID. Dudley, having done nothing wrong, declined. He was arrested and charged with 'failure to cooperate' for refusing to show ID on demand. And it's all on video."
"On the 22nd of March 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court will decide whether Dudley and the rest of us live in a free society, or in a country where we must show "the papers" whenever a cop demands them." ...

"Originally, HB 1247 would have repealed the requirement to obtain a permit before carrying a handgun concealed in a vehicle for self-defense. But surprisingly, David Conway, lobbyist for NRA affiliated South Dakota Shooting Sports Association, opposed this pro-gun bill in committee, stating that he had a problem with repealing the permit requirement."
" 'If youre going to carry in an enclosed motor vehicle, you better have a permit,' Mr. Conway stated." ...
"By destroying HB 1247s pro-gun Right to Arms in Vehicles language, the Conway amendment helped politicians sidestep the real issue that bearing arms for self-defense while in your vehicle is a right, not a government granted privilege."

The House version is H.R. 3799, and the Senate version is S. 2082. The bill is titled, "The Constitution Restoration Act of 2004." Initial sponsors of the bill include Rep. Robert Aderholt (AL), Rep. "Pentagon officials' intention to hold hundreds of prisoners captured in the Afghanistan war indefinitely at the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo, Cuba, will soon become untenable for legal and humanitarian reasons."
"Prisoners are being held without charges, and no military tribunals are scheduled. One Pentagon official has said that even if there are tribunals, a convict still might not be released at the end of a sentence if he were deemed too dangerous."
"It is perfectly understandable that the U.S. military would hold prisoners of war with the intention of repatriating them at the end of conflict. But the Pentagon considers the war on terrorism open- ended and detainees as potential terrorists who be held for years without legal process, military or civilian."
"These officials also claim the detainees, now numbering about 650, are not eligible for American constitutional protections because they are being held in Cuba, where no such guarantees exist. Of course, the government also has long contended Guantanamo is U.S. territory." |

------- "Lawrence is joining a national debate over the USA Patriot Act and how far cities should go to oppose a law intended to thwart terrorism."
"A coalition of about a dozen residents, calling itself the Lawrence Bill of Rights Defense Committee, wants city commissioners to adopt a resolution calling for the law to be repealed. The resolution will be considered tonight."
"The resolution would direct the city's Police Department not to help federal authorities enforce a law that has been challenged on constitutional grounds."
"Among other things, the resolution would direct the Police Department to 'refrain' from spying on the public or using race, religion or ethnicity in choosing which individuals they investigate." |

"The United States' 'war on terror' has been 'extremely damaging' for human rights, and has been used as an excuse by totalitarian regimes to impose oppressive laws, a leading think tank said yesterday."
"The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), traditionally viewed as an establishment body, concluded in a report that issues such as Guantanamo Bay mean that Washington can no longer 'assume a high moral position'."
Countries such as Pakistan and Uzbekistan have brought in so-called anti-terrorist laws insisting that they are not much different to the Patriot Act enacted by the Bush administration, said the report's author, Professor Rosemary Foot. |

"Doyle parked his vehicle near a school entrance at about 8 a.m. After a few minutes, police allege he pulled down his shorts, partially exposed himself, then began to masturbate."
"A teacher, Mike Johnston, approached Doyles vehicle and noticed the activity. Upon being discovered, Doyle quickly left the parking lot, driving against traffic to leave, police said."
------- What a stellar law enforcement officer. If Sarah Brady had her way, guys like these would be the only ones armed in America, while you would be left helpless at the mercy of thugs and perverts (both with badges and without.) |

And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms....The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. Thomas Jefferson in a letter to William S. Smith in 1787. Taken from Jefferson, On Democracy p. 20, S. Padover ed., 1939 |
