Ron Greenwell has been in the business of selling guns for close to 25 years. And he spent 20 years hauling merchandise to gun shows around Southern Indiana taking advantage of the often huge crowds those shows draw. I did it for years and then I got too crippled up, Greenwell said. Now he sells guns strictly out of his shop, Rons Gun Repair and Sales Inc., which means he must possess a Federal Firearms License (FFL) even though a large percentage of vendors at gun shows are not licensed, nor are they required by law to be. As private collectors selling from their own collection, federal and state law does not define them as a dealer engaged in the business of selling guns. |

The next few months constitute prime time to shop for a new shotgun for next season. A reader e-mailed me recently to suggest this as a column topic. I hope the following information helps. Personal shotgun preference is as individualized as preference in automobiles or fishing tackle. Experienced hunters have their own ideas about what works best. These are my ideas after 35 years in the outdoor writing business. |

The angels are crying again. I pray that God wraps his arms around young Lawrence King and keeps them tightly around him forever. I pray for this child's family and friends to find the faith, strength and courage to somehow push through the most agonizing and paralyzing pain that anyone should endure. Another innocent, beautiful life ripped out of the universe by rage again meeting the free and easy access to a handgun. |

A new bill proposed at the legislature would allow for police to withhold misconduct reports from the public. Supporters of the bill believe that police misconduct should be kept secret from the public so to not discredit police testimony. Others say that a forthright police unit is essential to the community.
In September, Jared Massey was zapped with a taser by Trooper John Gardner. A video of the incident was recorded from Gardner’s patrol car. Gardner can be seen shocking Massey until he hits the ground while Massey’s wife screams from the side of their SUV.
More than a million people watched the video on “YouTube.” Massey was shocked to see his new found fame. The footage may have never been seen had Massey not made a records request to obtain the tape. |

When federal policy got in his way, New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg found a way around it to combat illegal guns in his city. Mayor Sheila Dixon has learned a thing or two from Mr. Bloomberg. And now they're joining forces to better track the sources of illegal guns that drive much of the crime in their cities. It may seem like an odd pairing, but federal limitations on this critical data and the ease with which illegal guns move from state to state require a double-team approach. |

"Miami's police chief and a city commissioner talked on Thursday about banning assault rifles in the city. They said what they really want is for the federal government to take action." -------

I have written in the past about the BATFE's own record keeping. Since the ATF demands 100% compliance out of dealers it is only natural to look at how their own record keeping compares
Inspector General reported:
"In our survey of IOIs, 46.5 percent (139 of 299) reported that they found a discrepancy between the NFRTR inventory report and a licensee's inventory 'always' or 'most of the time. Further, 44.4 percent of respondents (133 of 299) said that the discrepance was due to an error in the NFRTR 'always' or 'most of the time. In comparison no respondents reported that the error was 'always" on the part of the licensee and only 2 percent (6 of 299) reported that the error was on the part of the licensee 'most of the time" |

The New York senator was trying to reassure voters in a Wisconsin sausage joint, the Brat Stop, this afternoon that no lawful gunowner has anything to worry about from her with gun control, and let on that shed chambered more than a few rounds in her time. You know you may not believe it, but Ive actually gone hunting, she said to some surprise and laughter. I know, you may not believe it, but its true. My father taught me to shoot a hundred years ago. |

You have no right to read this. The First Amendment gives me the right to write it, but doesnt necessarily give you the right to read it. Or so I was once told by an attorney. While the right to free speech certainly infers a corresponding right to hear what is being spoken, he said, the First Amendment doesnt explicitly grant such a right. So theoretically, it could be argued that no such right exists. The key word being theoretically. As a practical matter, the freedom to read whatever we choose is such an intrinsic part of our national character as to make legal theory superfluous. People would rise in outrage if government ever attempted to proscribe what they read. Theory and reality are often two different things. |

An election-year dispute over whether to allow loaded guns in national parks is holding up a vote on a massive bill affecting public lands from coast to coast. Democrats accuse Republicans of trying to score political points by injecting a "wedge" issue like gun rights into a noncontroversial bill. Republicans counter that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is trying to protect the two leading Democratic candidates for president by shielding them from a politically difficult vote on an issue that many rural voters consider crucial. |

"The smoking permits were immediately lambasted as an excessive nanny state measure and "political suicide", given that their introduction would alienate the one quarter of British adults who smoke"
"The scheme would ensure smokers had to make a conscious decision to continue the habit and require people to become "registered addicts"."
"He admitted there could be a problem with an emerging black market where those with permits sold them to those without, and that it could create the impression that as long as one is licensed smoking is not harmful."

Porter County resident John Hamilton has come to the annual Dunes Rifle show for the past few years. "I like to see what's available," said Hamilton, lined up in the entranceway of the Porter County Expo Center on Saturday. About 2,000 people are expected to attend the show, which continues today. The event drew 150 venders from Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Kentucky, said George Horton, executive officer of the Dunes Rifle and Pistol Club of Northwest Indiana. Those attending can buy, sell and trade fire arms, knives and military accessories. |

A man has filed suit against the city of Winter Springs, accusing two of its police officers of mistaking his home for someone else's, hauling him outdoors without clothes and shooting dead his Rottweiler. The suit, filed Thursday, seeks unspecified damages. William A. Riggin alleges he was in the shower when officers "stormed" into his home May 14, 2006. They thought they were three houses down, responding a home where an alarm had sounded. |

"A bill to regulate and enforce the writ of habeas corpus, and for the better securing the liberty of the citizens; ..."

"...The organized militia, which under the peculiar system of Kentucky is a formidable Body entitled the "State Guard" is almost entirely officered by disunionists. . . . In their hands exclusively go all the arms and ammunition of the state. On the side of the Union, young men are riding all the circuits of the state purchasing all the powder and lead and raising all the arms possible. At every cross road store they buy all the powder to be had five pounds here and ten pounds there and direct all their side to have all their arms in readiness-- With arms in the hands of the Union men secession and revolution in Kentucky is impossible! ..." |
