MOSCOW - Legislators are holding up a proposed gun bill, and that's just fine with the University of Idaho administration.
A provision in the bill would have forbid local governments and college administrators from banning guns on Idaho college campuses. UI President Tim White said Friday if the bill had passed as written, they'd have a potentially dangerous situation on their hands.
"It would have allowed concealed weapons, loaded weapons, on the University of Idaho campus, and all the campuses in the state of Idaho," said White. "We just found that to be unacceptable." |

The news of yet another shooting spree--the latest, as of this writing, at Northern Illinois University--begs a question that's rarely asked these days. Not "Why did he do it?" It's human nature to want an answer to that one, of course, even though the headlines move on well before anything approaching a useful analysis can ever be figured out, and we're left to conclude what's most obvious: Like the others, he did it because he could. And the question isn't "How could this happen here?" Sadly, most people have come to understand that they shouldn't expect their communities to be immune.

The second tragedy lies in the way we refuse to learn from our past fiascos. As the clich posits, one form of insanity is repeating the same behavior over and over again yet expecting different results. Yet Americans do exactly that after every major shooting: We lack the social and political resolve to enact an aggressive gun control agenda. |

According to Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes, Proctor had made several calls to the residence before showing up at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Proctor broke out a window in a door and turned a knob to get into the home. Once inside he made threatening remarks to his ex-girlfriend; her children, who were present; and to Fredrickson. Proctor confronted Fredrickson in the bathroom of the residence’s master bedroom, Hughes said. Hughes said Fredrickson was armed with a pistol and warned Proctor to back off, but Proctor charged him. Fredrickson shot Proctor once in the leg, but Proctor kept coming. Fredrickson then shot Proctor three more times, including a shot to the face. |

Cops say they're responsible for their friend's death. And they're not the ones who pulled the trigger.
The sheriff's office now says Marcus Bradford would still be alive if he and two others didn't go into the Terrace Heights home with guns last week. Investigators think the trio intended to steal drugs and money. |

A man won't face charges for shooting his brother to death, prosecutors said.
They determined that the 24-year-old killed 29-year-old Cortez L. Jones in self-defense.
Police went to a disturbance at a home on Crystal Avenue near East 133rd Terrace on Feb. 8. When they arrived, they found Jones dead. Family members told police that Jones was trying to force his way into the house with a knife, and that was when his younger brother fired a gun. |

Since England banned all guns in November 1997, gun crime has gone up. As recently as 2006, Scotland Yard noted that more people than ever are carrying firearms as fashion accessories. These are not the law-biding citizens. They are not allowed to carry.
A report in January 2006 showed offense involving guns soared by as much as 50 percent in some parts of the country. Kings College in London found that the use of handguns in crime rose by 40 percent in the two years after the weapons were banned.
"Hot" burglary rates, defined as burglaries committed while people are in the building, is 13 percent in the U.S. and in gun-free Great Britain it's 59 percent. |

In order to reduce firearm circulation, our country needs to reexamine the protection of concealed weapons, like D.C has done, and hopefully find that personal handguns only exacerbate the problem of gun violence.
Tragedies like the one at Northern Illinois University can serve to shake up and put pressure on lawmakers to make changes in the system. Smart firearm legislation, founded in fact not on old traditions, is needed to curb gun violence and death that is all too common. |

The Courts of Justice Committee yesterday killed a Henrico delegate's bill that would have protected from prosecution and civil liability homeowners who use "any degree of physical force," including deadly physical force, against an intruder they consider a threat.
In a bipartisan vote, the committee voted 11-4 to shelve House Bill 710, sponsored by Del. William R. Janis, R-Henrico. A similar, so-called "castle" bill proposed by Janis last year met a similar fate. Three Republicans joined the ranks of Democrats in voting against the measure. |

The effect of these now-outdated regulations on people who carry firearms for self-protection was far from the forefront at the time these regulations were adopted. As of the end of 1982, only six states routinely allowed average citizens to carry handguns for self-defense. Now, 48 states have a process for issuance of licenses or permits to carry firearms, and 40 of those states provide the opportunity for average citizens to legally carry firearms for self-defense. |

Not only is the campus of NIU a gun-free zone, the entire state of Illinois is a de facto gun-free zone. The governor and Legislature have repeatedly resisted the requests of the citizenry for the right to carry in their home state. This shooting reminds us too readily of the recent killings in Tinley Park.
We cannot provide safety through proclamation. In addition to signaling an aggressor that he will meet little resistance within their boundaries, gun-free zones provide the potential victims within them with a false feeling of security. They are nothing more than protection-free zones. Too often they become killing zones. |

Home invasions. Rapes. Carjackings. Murders. Everyday our local and national news reports that these heinous crimes are being committed all around us. What is rarely reported is the number of crimes which are prevented when people use guns in self-defense. According to research by Florida State University and other universities, an estimated 2.5 million ordinary Americans use a gun to protect themselves from criminals each year. In the majority of cases, no shots are ever fired; the mere act of wielding a weapon is enough to deter the criminal and stop the intended offense. |

"A Northwest Side man has been charged with 12 misdemeanor weapons charges after Chicago police raided his home and found three handguns, three shotguns and six long rifles, along with several hundred rounds of ammunition." -------
Submitter note: Notice that the 59 year old gentleman accused of these horrendous crimes is not actually accused of any criminal activity, just of owning a rather smallish gun collection. I wonder how many Chicago coppers were assigned to this raid while crack dealers and pimps continued walking the streets of Chicago. Now a "safer" environment exists in which they can commit their crimes. |

President Bush has embarked on the final phase of Pax Americana and is ushering in an advanced imperial stage that will endanger every living American. The coming election will assure us that every American will have his Second Amendment rights infringed or predated upon in some fashion no matter which party succeeds (is there a difference except the spelling?).
Remember, guns dont kill people, governments and the criminals they create do. |

So, some cow chip-kickin' senator from Louisiana doesn't want Mike Sullivan, the US attorney in Boston, to become head of the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms because Sullivan wants to make it harder for people to get guns.
Um, isn't that what the head of the ATF is supposed to do?
According to The Honorable David Vitter, Sullivan favors regulations that gun nuts find "burdensome." Leave aside for the moment that there is no place in the civilized world where it is easier to get a gun than the good old US of A. As Jimmy Tingle, the great Cantabrigian, put it, this is the only country where it takes longer to get a phone than a gun.

Are gun owners going to continue fighting these endless bills coming out of their state legislatures and Congress or will they ban together once and for all and do what has to be done...
A win in DC v Keller won't stop the gun grabbers. Time is critical.
The Second Amendment is the most important of all the amendments. Will you step up to the plate and organize your fellow gun owners and start the process of demanding your state lawmakers get the legislation through your state house to revitalize the militia or keep fighting skirmishes? |

Since the Illinois House cannot seem to get their communal heads off the pillow of denial, kicking their bedposts with demands for action is now the duty of cognizant Illinois citizens.
Illinois holds no monopoly on institutional righteousness and 48 other states are not all wrong on permitting concealed carry.
House Bill 4544 as introduced by Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Peoria, needs your support.
No law or camera will eliminate gun violence. However, this progressive legislation will enable responsible citizens an opportunity to adequately defend themselves. People of Illinois: do your duty or sweet dreams. |
