"It looks like those who said the Obama Administration would strike while the iron is hot may have been correct, and the Administration may be doing it in a way that does not require them to even get a vote in Congress. In this morning's edition of the Shooting Wire, Jim Shepherd writes that Canadian officials have it on 'good authority' our State Department may be on the verge of cutting off all imports of certain calibers of ammunition.""Ammos listed for this rumored ban include the .50BMG, 7.62x39mm Soviet, 7.62x51mm NATO, .308 Winchester, 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington. ..." ... "'As auto makers are in the news these days for asking government to rescue them from the consequences of their bad marketplace decisions, firearm owners are telling Washington by their actions to leave them alone,' notes gun rights expert John M. Snyder."
"'The different attitudes are obvious to anyone who looks at today's headlines,' continues Snyder. 'One of the many current headlines proclaims that 'automakers seek $14 billion more in aid' in The New York Times. A completely different headline reports that 'fear of stricter gun laws spurs surge in sales' in Army Times. One shows reliance on Washington. The other shows self-reliance, even concern with government.'" ... |

"A while back, in the Heller case, when some centralist libertarians put their faith in the murderous and criminal federal leviathan to protect the individual right to bear arms, those among us suspicious of all state power and centralism warned that no good would come of this. The central state would only use this as an excuse to further entrench its power to regulate us, and to supervise the states, further eroding federalism, one of the few remaining structural limits on central state power." ... |

"In general, property owners have a lot of leeway regarding who is allowed onto their property. It becomes a little more clouded when it comes to property that is generally open to the public, such as private businesses. The South Dakota House says local governments should be barred from adopting ordinances restricting possession of firearms. The House voted 46-20 on Tuesday to pass HB1278, which prohibits townships, counties and cities from adopting general restrictions on firearms. Supporters said the goal is to make laws dealing with carrying firearms uniform across the state. They said people with concealed weapons permits should be able to go from one community to another without fear of violating a local law.
The House killed a proposed amendment to let local governments restrict firearms if they posted areas as gun-free zones. |
