Before political correctness swept over the land like a red tide, many citizens found ways of defeating criminal violence that were, shall we say, ingenious. Today, nearly all Democrats, many Libertarians, and the squishy-soft Republican leadership would rise up in arms if the shotgun squads returned.
But they were once an integral part of the law and order cycle of many cities...

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) is calling for stricter efforts to reduce small-arms imports and exports. The OSCE said a tougher crackdown on small arms is "necessary to prevent weapons from getting into the hands of organized criminals and terrorists."
Members of the OSCE recently met in Vienna, Austria, to discuss their respective laws in an effort to reduce small-arms trafficking, secure stockpiles, and promote destruction of small arms. |

Senate Bill 242, which seeks to amend Alaskas Right to Carry law so that permits from all other states would be honored, was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee this week on a 5-0 vote. Existing law charges the Department of Public Safety with determining and publicizing which states currently meet Alaskas criteria for recognition. DPS inaction is what led to the introduction of SB242. |

So, campaign-finance reform passed the House, putting it on a clear path to becoming law.
This is odd, since I thought that rich special interests had a hammer-lock on Washington and could bribe their way into getting whatever legislative outcome they wanted.
Actually, the problem with Washington, as last night demonstrates, isn't money, but a whole host of deeper maladies, all of which are represented, not banned, by Shays-Meehan... |

Sen. Phil Gingrey's (R-Marietta) amendment, which passed 48-2, would make it explicit that legally owned weapons would not be confiscated.
After the vote, the two acknowledged that, with an election looming, they could not afford the appearance of voting against gun rights. |

On Friday, Feb. 15, 2002, Ellen Ratner, in her WorldNetDaily column Liberal & Proud, wrote on the subject of "Reality education: Guns and sex." I will comment only on the guns portion of her column.
Ms. Ratner and I agree on one point: Education is necessary to save lives. Second Amendment Sisters advocates firearms education, not only for school-aged kids, but for gun owners as well... |

The Senate Judiciary Committee couldn't have picked a worse time to kill a sensible bill that would have brought equity to Colorado's crazy-quilt local concealed-weapons policies.
With many term-limited sheriffs near the end of their tenures, it's iffy whether permits they issued remain valid. Law-abiding citizens who believe they legally can carry concealed may suddenly find themselves on the wrong side of the law. |

State Supreme Court justices, who began using guards and taxpayer-funded cars last fall, are now asking for the guards to carry guns and make arrests.
Court spokesman Joe Tybor refused Thursday to comment on the legislation or explain why the guards should have more authority. He did say the court's plan to improve security was in the works before Sept. 11 but was implemented sooner because of the attacks. |

State lawmakers are considering legislation that would return gun rights to Maryland residents like former "Citizen of the Year" Donald G. Arnold who lost them because of minor or old convictions. Key lawmakers are trying to restore gun rights of residents who lost them, recognizing that some laws the General Assembly approved have snared law-abiding gun owners. |

What are small arms and light weapons?
Firearms designed for personal use are considered small arms. Examples of these include revolvers, self-loading pistols, rifles, and shotguns. Light weapons are designed for use by several persons, serving as a crew, and these include heavy machine-guns, some types of grenade launchers, portable anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns, and portable launchers of anti-aircraft missile systems. |

The Courage to Be Free - By Charlton Heston
"Charlton Heston is an odd political duck -- a Hollywood legend and Bill of Rights absolutist who is despised by most liberals and loved by most conservatives. His rejection by the left is made the more interesting because of his early and outspoken support of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a time when Hollywood shunned King and would not hire blacks for so much as stagehand work. Heston is also civil toward homosexuality -- so long as it's not wagged in his face." |

A German man went on a shooting rampage in a German office and a high school, because he was fired.
-- I lived in Germany for a year, and shot twice a week at the local gun club. he gun laws are a Brady wish list: 3-day class, written and shooting test, registration, purchase and ownership limits, "assault weapons" banned outright, "may issue" concealed carry, mandatory safe storage, self-defense (with or without a gun) almost completely illegal...

A feisty store clerk foiled a weekend robbery attempt, and a determined off-duty Cheektowaga police officer nabbed two suspects, Cheektowaga police reported Monday.
The incident began at about 11:15 a.m. Saturday, when a would-be robber entered the Kwik Fill station at 2493 Broadway and threatened to blow the clerk's head off, Lt. Cheryl Rucinski said. No weapon was shown, but the thief had his hand in his pocket, as if he had a gun.... |

"A general Dissolution of Principles and Manners will more surely overthrow the Liberties of America than the whole force of the Common Enemy. While the People are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their Virtue they will be ready to surrender their Liberties to the first external or internal invader. ... If Virtue and Knowledge are diffused among the People, they will never be enslaved. This will be their great Security." - Samuel Adams |
