"I usually don't read too many antigun articles for the simple reason that rarely are they anything but illogical emotional ramblings. The commentary, 'Havent we had enough?' is another such criticism but two items in this editorial struck me as interesting."
"First, the author actually admitted she was completely ignorant concerning firearms. 'I don't like guns. I've never handled a gun. I was not raised in a family that hunted.' Okay, so this is another hysterical plea for weapon confiscation predicated on fear; at least Ms. Larsen acquiesces to the obvious."

"A time-honored strategy of the forcible citizen disarmament lobby is to paint a distorted picture that links gun owners with criminals. When I say 'time-honored,' I mean just that."
"The National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934 is a prime example ..." ...
"The latest application of this strategy might well be just across the river in Illinois, where state Representative Harry Osterman's HB 6123 would make it a felony (a Class 1 felony) 'to knowingly sell or give a firearm to a person who is a street gang member.' This could put gun rights advocates in something of a tough spot, at least with regard to the court of public opinion. To oppose it, after all, can be portrayed as 'being on the side of violent gangbanger thugs.'" ... |

"Readers of Gun World magazine will note that I did a roundup of some likely guns worthy of back country carry in the March issue, now on sale."
"Various published reports indicate that park employees have been preparing for this change, and there is some concern probably not entirely unwarranted that some fools will parade around for macho photographs, especially around park entrance signs and other identifiable park landmarks. More intelligent gun owners will simply mind their own business as this rule becomes effective ..." ... |

"The Wall Street Journal Law Blog has an interesting ... post devoted to whether or not Justice Antonin Scalia will 'flip flop' on the Second Amendment when the Supreme Court hears the gun rights case McDonald v. Chicago next month. The controversy centers on an article by Jess Bravin, the Journals Supreme Court correspondent, that features the following paragraphs:""In a 1997 book, 'A Matter of Interpretation,' Justice Scalia wrote that he viewed "'he Second Amendment as a guarantee that the federal government would not interfere with the right of the people to keep and bear arms.'"
"... 'Of course,' Justice Scalia continued, 'properly understood, it is no limitation upon arms control by the states.'" ... |

"According to reports, the main motivation of the sponsor of SB247 is to honor the memory of John Browning, the Utah gun manufacturer."
"Really?"
"Browning was indeed an innovator. He held 128 gun patents and was a key figure in the early years of the state. His innovations influenced virtually all future designs of firearms and are still a part of firearms today."
"But SB247, sponsored by Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Eagle Mountain, would create a state holiday honoring Browning on the very same day as the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. "The majority in State v. Sieyes rejects a 17-year-old's challenge to Washington's restriction on gun possession by under-18-year-olds; eight Justices take this view. The restriction is basically a ban on under-18-year-olds' possessing guns, with exceptions for possession at home (for self-defense) or on family property, with a parent's permission, as well as for certain lawful hunting, target-shooting, training, or military purposes."

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. ~ Marcus Tullius Cicero (42B.C) |
