Virginia lawmakers are expected to pass a bill that would allow anyone with a concealed-carry permit to bring their guns to restaurants that serve alcohol.
Restaurant patrons may soon be allowed to bring concealed weapons along when they go out to eat.
Restaurant managers do not like it because they don't expect most customers to embrace the idea of bullets and booze. But the combination is exactly what will be allowed in Virginia if Senate Bill 334 passes.
"I just don't think there's any reason for it to tell you the truth," said Manny Caralivanos, Kelly's Tavern.

When you read Geert Wilders' speech, consider how many of the incidents he speaks of would never have happened in any part of the United States where individuals assume responsibility for their own physical safety. We may still suffer a bit of thuggery here and thereAcorn, Barack Obama's Praetorians, for examplebut it loses most of its effect where, instead of dialing 911, people can reach for a 1911A1.
...we must see to it that the first ten amendments to the Constitution, ... commonly known as the Bill of Rights, is enforced energetically and stringently, as the Founding Fathers intended. To any extent that our freedom of conscience is not fully protected by the First Amendment, it will be protected by the Second. |

Courtesy of a rider attached to a new credit card reform act that went into effect this week, gun owners now can bear firearms in federal parklands where the weapons previously were forbidden.
The key point is that this will bring national parks in line with state laws, said Greg Zeman, chief of protection for the Apostle Islands National Park.
But those laws vary considerably from state to state.
For instance, federal parks in Wisconsin, such as the Apostle Islands, still wont allow visitors to carry concealed firearms, in keeping with state law.
In contrast, national parks in Minnesota will allow people to carry concealed firearms, as long as the bearer has the necessary permits in hand. |

A San Bernardino County, California man reportedly used his gun to stop a woman who was using a brick to break in to his home.
Police say that the home invading woman used a brick to break out a window at the man's home, prompting him to call the police. The homeowner also reportedly warned the home invader that he had a gun. Undeterred, the home invader reportedly stuck her head through the window, causing the homeowner to fear for his safety and the safety of his family, police say. The homeowner reportedly fired one shot in self defense, striking the home invader and ending the attack. |

This means that Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, 13 other National Parks and Historic Sites, and 9 National Wildlife Refuges in Georgia will no longer deny the basic human right of self defense - but only while visitors are outside. The National Park Service has been aggressively training its rangers on the law banning firearms at federal facilities and will be applying that law to keep firearms out of visitor centers and rangers' offices, although they will not take action against firearms in lodges and some other buildings. In Savannah, Fort Pulaski officials say there are strict guidelines for those who carry firearms. "If they don't obey those rules, they will be punished." |

The Washington Post has an interesting profile of longtime libertarian activist and fighter for gun possession rights, Tom Palmer. Palmer was one of the original plaintiffs in the Heller case, which vindicated the Second Amendment by overturning D.C.'s ban on handgun ownership. (Palmer was booted from the case for technical standing reasons before it reached the Supreme Court.)
Palmer is now one of the plaintiffs in a new legal challenge to still-existing D.C. laws that prohibit the public carrying ("bearing," as in "the right to keep and bear arms") of your gun in D.C. |

-- Whether the Second Amendment applies to attempts by states and cities to regulate firearms. The justices ruled in 2008 that the amendment guarantees an individual's right to own a firearm for self-defense. But the decision in Heller v. District of Columbia applied only to the federal government and its enclaves such as the District. |

"But as a progressive, I would sooner lay my child to rest than succumb to the belief that the use of a gun for self-defense is somehow not in itself a gun crime."
Morally speaking, I have no problem with anti-gun ideologues who wish to place themselves in peril by waiving their rights of self-defense. You almost have to respect someone who is willing to die for his beliefs. But when he decides that others should also die for his beliefs the real trouble begins.
There are actually a lot of Doug Van Gorders in the world. In fact, there are whole organizations of them. The Brady Campaign for Gun Control is the first that comes to mind. |

A homeowner hearing someone trying to break into his house early Saturday morning yelled at the intruder he had a gun, according to sheriffs deputies responding to the call of a burglary in progress in the 10300 block of Maple Avenue.
The would-be burglar, later identified as Jennifer London, 23, broke out the front window and stuck her head through.
San Bernardino County Sheriff s deputies said the resident feared for his familys safety and fired at the suspect causing her to flee.
She was located a short time later with a bullet wound to her chest and was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
Amazingly, the bullet passed through her body without hitting any vital organs or arteries, according to investigators. |

The legislature is considering a means of revenue enhancement that would make privacy for CCW holders a huge problem. This is the exact same bill that was rejected by the legislature last year.
InsureNet is lobbying for this bill so they can install 1,000s of camera or scanners on nearly all of Nevadas public roads. If it passes it would allow InsureNet, to photograph/scan every license plate on our roads. This data would be scanned and analyzed by InsureNet for the purpose of catching uninsured motorists. Its a nice premise but it comes with some serious problems. |

The Pennsylvania Firearm Owners Associations website says that while concealed carry permits are not granted to minors, convicted felons or domestic abusers, it is very simple for trustworthy, law-abiding people to obtain one quickly and cheaply.
The Associations wording is nave, plain and simple. In 2006, Charles Carl Roberts IV murdered five Amish students in Lancaster County before turning the gun on himself. Although seemingly a sick individual, Roberts had no record of mental instability. It is unreasonable to assume or expect that everyone interested in carrying a concealed weapon will continue to be a trustworthy, law-abiding person after the purchase of his handgun. |

Tennesseans are packing heat in higher numbers these days. The number of people in Tennessee with permits to carry handguns increased by 23 percent from January of 2009 to January of this year.
In the Tennessee counties of the Tri-Cities region, the average increase of permit holders in the past year was 24 percent, according to the Tennessee Department of Safety.
Ken Potter attributes this increase to multiple shooting events in the news. He teaches hand gun carry permit classes in both Carter and Unicoi Counties, and says those stories always elicit the same response, a desire for self-defense. |

McDonald v. City of Chicago challenges the city's 28-year-old handgun ban, which remains standing after a similar law in the District of Columbia was overturned almost two years ago in the case of D.C. v. Heller. Virginia attorney Alan Gura--who previously argued the Heller case before the Supreme Court--selected the plaintiffs in McDonald through a meticulous process. With financial backing from the Second Amendment Foundation, Gura conducted e-mail, phone, and face-to-face interviews with about a dozen Chicagoans. |

The primary response to the new law, according to Young will be one of education. Rangers will approach visitors with firearms to make sure they understand the laws regarding possession and answer any questions others may have. He feels sure there will be visitors unaware of the change in law who will be surprised to see guns carried openly.
"Whether there are significantly more weapons being brought into the park remains to be seen. There's weren't people lining up at the entrance this morning with firearms." |

The Wyoming House of Representatives on Monday passed legislation under which a permit would no longer be required to carry a concealed weapon in Wyoming.
If passed, Wyoming would become the third state, after Alaska and Vermont, to allow conceal-carry without a permit.
The bill, House Bill 113, passed 42-15. It now advances to the Senate, where it will be taken up as soon as the end of the week. But although the bill has Senate sponsors, Senate Majority Leader Jim Anderson, R-Glenrock, said the proposal will "probably be received with more scrutiny on the Senate side" than in the House. |

An Oklahoma lawmaker is one step closer to getting a controversial gun law passed. According to House Bill 2994, most ammunition, firearms or firearm accessories manufactured in Oklahoma and kept in Oklahoma, would be under state law and would not be subject to federal regulations.
State representative John Enns, who authored the bill, wants the measure put in place before the Federal Government creates new gun laws.

A third key litmus issue is gun rights. Im sure Im speaking to the choir here. And not just those weapons which are currently OK for us to own. We need to unroll the carpet quite a bit here. The concept of a militia isnt just for farmers and pitchforks, it is for all the modern equivalents of pitchforks and muskets, too. See this article for more ideas about how to give the local kids something useful to do away from the Nintendo.

"Amy Bishop's rampage has led some observers to call for "conceal carry" laws to be applied to universities, on the grounds that college campuses would be safer places if more people carried firearms and could stop shooting sprees in progress."
"As the blogger David Codrea wrote on February 13, quoting a student at the University of Alabama at Huntsville, Gina Hammond: 'I'm scared to go back to school. However, if they were to allow me to carry my pistol on campus, I would not be as scared. ... I'm sorry that nobody in that room had a pistol to save at least one person's life.'" |

I first became interested in the Bulgarian AK-74 NDS-2 Rifle, 5.45x39 after reading about the 5.45x39 AK variants in Boston's Gun Bible. Over the years I've owned and shot an assortment of AK's chambered for 7.62x39 and to be honest non have impressed me with accuracy attained.
While the AK-47Bulgarian AK-74 NDS-2 Rifle, 5.45x39 is as reliable as anything made, I don't consider 6-12 inch 100 yard groups to be acceptable performance. Maybe for military suppressive fire tactics, but not for a lone survivor or small survival group. |

Tracy residents will now have to pay every time they call 9-1-1 for a medical emergency.
But there are a couple of options. Residents can pay a $48 voluntary fee for the year which allows them to call 9-1-1 as many times as necessary.
Or, there's the option of not signing up for the annual fee. Instead, they will be charged $300 if they make a call for help.
Ed.: And you thought calling Europe was expensive. This doesn't seem to apply for police or fire calls, but maybe the article is wrong.
"A $300 fee and you don't even want to be thinking about that when somebody is in need of assistance," said Tracy resident Greg Bidlack.
Residents will soon receive the form in the mail where they'll be able to make their selection. No date has been set for when the charges will go into effect.

Across the U.S., most public universities ban students and faculty from carrying concealed handguns on campus. Colorado State University has, up until now, been one of the few exceptions to this rule. The university's board of directors voted to pass a ban on carrying concealed weapons last year.
The region's county sheriff, Jim Alderden, says if the CSU policy is put into place, he will not jail anyone found guilty of violating it.
"What CSU is trying to pass is a policy," Alderden says. "And their position is that the university policy trumps state law and the U.S. Constitution."
Many Colorado State University students seem to oppose laws that restrict their rights to carry a concealed weapon.
