A bill sailed through the house Monday that would make it much easier for citizens to legally use deadly force.
The House voted 143-4 Monday to pass the “Castle Doctrine” bill, which clarifies when a person can use deadly force in self-defense and protects the person from legal action when using deadly force. |

HELENA - The House, under pressure from law enforcement groups, reversed itself on a proposed law that would let residents brandish a firearm if they felt threatened.
The House rejected the measure on a 50-48 vote Friday, a week after first endorsing it on a 57-43 vote. |

The legislation would allow someone to have a gun in a vehicle while on someone else's property, even if the property owner otherwise bans firearms. It passed its first Senate vote 22-7. It must pass one more vote before going to the state House of Representatives.
The beneficiaries would be people "who want to have the means of self-protection" while driving to or from work or around town, said Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Eagle Mountain and the bill's sponsor.
They would have to be able to possess a firearm legally. The gun would have to be out of sight and either inside a locked container or behind locked car doors. |

In her speech on Monday, February 12th, Sandy Froman ‘71 spoke to a crowd of students, faculty, and neighborhood residents advocating the protection of the First and Second Amendments. She made a point of emphasizing the strong connections between the two, and linked the current assaults against them. Indeed, a major point of her speech was that an open market of ideas—where no ideas are censored—is critical to the survival of a free society. |

Richard Seruga makes his own bullets for the guns he used to enjoy firing at his backyard range. Now, he wants a federal jury to let him use them again outside his home, in an enclave of Lower Saucon losing its rural characteristics to suburbia.
Seruga, 62, and his wife, Margaret, 65, have filed a federal lawsuit against their neighbors and township Police Chief Guy Lesser, claiming since 2003 they have conspired against the Serugas' constitutional rights to enjoy their guns and home at 3877 Beeline Drive. |

Certainly the writers knew how to spell "militia," but chose to use the word "people" in the amendment because that was exactly what they meant. It is important to remember that the Constitution means whatever the Supreme Court says it means. In that regard, in U.S. vs. Verdugo-Urquidez (1990), the court ruled that the word "people" means the same thing throughout the Constitution. So, unless Freedom of Speech belongs only to the media, and Freedom of Religion only to large churches, then the right to keep and bear arms is clearly a personal right, not a corporate right. |

When it comes to bringing guns near downtown bars, there should be no more slaps on the wrist, Mayor Mike Amyx says. Instead, just the slamming of a jail cell door. "I think the penalty needs to be pretty stiff," Amyx said. Currently, the city has an ordinance that makes it illegal to possess a firearm within 200 feet of a drinking establishment unless the person has a state-issued concealed carry permit. But the city law doesn't include a mandatory jail sentence. Instead, it gives the municipal court judge the latitude of sentencing a person from zero to 365 days in jail. |

Iowa Army National Guard officials are investigating a serious security breach that left an armory at Camp Dodge unlocked overnight this week with about 700 combat weapons inside.
An inspection has determined none of the weapons was missing from the Johnston military base, but the incident is considered so serious that it has been reported to the National Guard Bureau in Arlington Va., Brig. Gen. Mark Zirkelbach, the Iowa National Guard's deputy adjutant, said Thursday. |

Owners of private parking lots would no longer be able to stop gun owners from storing their weapons in a parked car under a bill that received tentative approval in the Senate one of two bills getting majority support from state senators Thursday. SB78 is an attempt to balance private property rights with the right to bear arms, said sponsoring Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Lehi. The measure allows a religious group, or a company that operates a secure facility, to continue to prohibit guns from being stored in their parking lots. |

So there I was, a gift certificate for an outdoors store burning a hole in my pocket as I walked up and down the isles before finally stopping at the used gun rack. Technically, I'm not a gun nut, but I had the certificate, and thus should have been able to make a good deal. Two guns caught my eye, a used 20-gauge side-by-side which could have been a decent grouse gun, and an in-line muzzleloader complete with scope. Buying a used gun has changed a lot in recent years. Yes, there are still some bargains out there. A friend of mine recently came upon an antique handgun and made a great deal on it, but finding deals is much harder than it was a decade or more ago. |

Now is the time to take steps to fix the laws that are allowing far too many guns to end up on our streets. In Philadelphia last year, 2,004 people got shot, up 31 percent over 2001, according to an article in the Inquirer that attributed the figures to the Police Department. In 2004, Pennsylvania led the nation in the homicide rate among black victims: 29.5 per 100,000. Handguns were used in 81 percent of the killings. From 2004 to 2005, gun crime in the nation shot up 49.4 percent, according to a report by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. |

Kicking off the 2007 World Cup season, Team USA athletes hosted a successful Rocky Mountain Rifle Championship Feb. 14-18 at the U.S. Olympic Shooting Center. The test match showed that America's riflemen and women are set to take on the world in the year before the 2008 Olympic Games. Marking big finishes were Olympic Gold Medalist Matt Emmons of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Sgt. 1st Class Jason A. Parker and Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Tamas, both of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. For the women's squad, the team effort was apparent as the USA took top honors in all the women's events. |

According to the U.S. Constitution, we, the people, are guaranteed certain unalienable rights, or rights that cannot be taken away from us, rights that we are entitled to as human beings that the government should not interfere with. Those rights include freedom of speech, press and assembly, freedom to choose and practice the religion we believe to be correct, freedom to question the government through petition and the freedom to carry a nine-caliber hand cannon on our hips, just in case we need to protect ourselves.
All of those make perfect sense to me, except the last. Why is a person given the right to own something whose purpose is to end life?
