It's been a handful of years since Clio schools Superintendent Fletcher Spears III first contacted former Clio police chief Jim McLellan about the possibility of developing a plan that would allow staff members to carry a concealed weapon in school buildings.

In the wake of the Feb. 14 shooting at a Florida high school that left 14 students and three staff members dead, the idea has been rekindled but not at the urging of the superintendent.

"I've had several parents come forward and ask us to at least look at that as a possibility," said Spears, following a Thursday, Feb. 22, press conference at the Genesee County Sheriff's Office following a suspected threat at the district's high school.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder on Friday called for possibly restricting assault rifles or enacting red flag legislation to prevent school shootings, saying hes had personal experience watching young people die in a shooting and hopes to work with lawmakers to enact new laws.

I dont think having more guns is a good thing, Snyder said during the POLITICO State Solutions Conference in Washington. We need to have a thoughtful dialogue.

Snyder struck a decidedly bipartisan tone two days after President Donald Trump floated the idea of arming some teachers so they can defend against school shootings.

U.S. Rep. Don Young said Thursday that he supports arming teachers, while Sen. Lisa Murkowski urged patience and cooperation in response to the nation's latest school shooting.

Young, R-Alaska, in a sharp exchange with one of his Democratic challengers at a Juneau conference of municipal officials, said guns aren't the problem. Instead, he pointed to mental illness and people's exposure to "violence beyond anyone's imagination" in video games.

"Up until 40 years ago, kids brought to school every day: guns. They didn't shoot anybody. Something's happened," he said. "It is easy to blame an object why don't we look at the mental concept and the family structure?"

Insurance company Chubb said on Friday that it will stop underwriting an insurance policy for gun owners called NRA Carry Guard. The National Rifle Association-branded insurance covers gun owners in the event they face legal repercussions following firearm incidents.

"Three months ago, Chubb provided notice of our intent to discontinue participation in the NRA Carry Guard insurance program under the terms of our contract," Chubb said in a statement.

The announcement follows a Feb. 14 shooting that killed 17 people at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Yes, gun rights and rape prevention go together like peas and carrots.

Heres how I figure:

So many women have experienced rape in so many seemingly civilized situations: the bosss office, agent interviews, dates, bars, etc. Furthermore, they are unprepared for the situation and unable to defend themselves. Then because they didnt fight back and because they didnt go to the police immediately, figuring it would ruin their lives and not work out for the best, they are accused of lyingor extortionwhen they speak out years later.

Dealing a setback to pro-gun groups, the Second Circuit upheld restrictions Friday on how firearms can be transported from New York City homes to shooting ranges.

Writing for the unanimous three-member panel, U.S. Circuit Judge Gerard E. Lynch made clear that the security of New Yorkers was at issue.

The city has presented evidence supporting its contention that the rule serves to protect the public safety of both license-holding and non-license-holding citizens of New York City, he said.

The students walked out at about noon and held a rally in front of the school, holding signs and calling for an end to gun violence. The protest at Norcross came on the heels of similar walkouts at Lanier, Collins Hill and Mill Creek earlier in the week.

Today, Governor Rick Scott, the Florida Senate and the Florida House announced their respective plans to stop future mass shooters in our schools.

There are components of the plan that we should all support. Hardening our schools, putting law enforcement in all schools when students are present, training volunteer teachers to use guns and protect children, keeping guns out of the hands of the dangerously mentally ill, and allowing law enforcement and administrators to deal with people who are a danger to themselves or others, are all things that need to be done. Unfortunately, there are gun control measures being considered as well.

The Dicey Age Restriction For Semi-Automatic Rifles Idea

The big thought balloon being considered by several people, and endorsed by President Donald Trump, is a new age restriction on semi-automatic rifles. AP has already provided a roundup of the idea, while also positing it was Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump who are really pushing the President to act. Its understandable why people see the AR-15 as almost akin to Tolkiens One Ring or Thors Mjlnir, especially if their opinion is only based on how the rifle looks, which is similar to an M16 or an M4. Most people see the rifles and go, Oh noes! Cant have that! then cue up the creepy music from Doom.

The Association of New Jersey Rifle & Pistol Clubs (ANJRPC) has filed a federal lawsuit challenging the Garden States requirement that citizens demonstrate a good cause to obtain a carry permit.

ANJRPC, along with the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), unsuccessfully challenged the system about eight years ago. That case was Drake v. Filko.
This time around, theyre getting support from the National Rifle Association, and they are using, as part of their argument, a precedent from a SAF victory against a similar requirement in the District of Columbia (Wrenn v. District of Columbia), which is in a different federal court district.

In 1939, in a case involving sawed-off shotguns, the court ruled unanimously that the Second Amendment's "obvious purpose" was to "assure the continuation and render possible the effectiveness of" the state militia. Therefore, the court "cannot say that the Second Amendment guarantees to the citizen the right to keep and bear such a weapon."

When politicians say it's too soon to discuss the facts around a shooting, they mean they don't know the shooter's motive and background, they don't know if the incident was random or was related to something that happened at the school, they don't know what kind of gun was used and how the gun was obtained, and, finally, they don't know if the responses made to the incident were proper or incomplete.

Unfortunately, that leaves all the air in the room to be taken up by national reporters with an agenda.
