..."So why would anybody want or need to carry a gun to church, of all places?" -- Why should anyone have to justify to this writer or to the government where they choose to carry?
"Are there still hostile heathens lurking in the woods outside the chapel intent on scalping those who stole their land?" -- Is this pseudo-journalist trying to tell us getting raped, killed or mugged on the way to and from church as well as inside is an impossibility? Maybe he should read a recent story from New Zealand about an elderly woman being attacked in church.
"This newspaper is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment 'the right to bear arms' " -- Could have fooled us.
"but a proposal before the Georgia House is devoid of reason or good sense. There is, it appears, a reason that some Second Amendment advocates are referred to as 'gun nuts' ... with the emphasis on the second word." ... -- Maybe early Americans were nuts too, since there is historic precedent for being armed in church. According to a paper by Clayton Cramer, A 1619 [Virginia] statute required everyone to attend church on the Sabbath, and all such as bear arms shall bring their pieces, swords, powder and shot. Those failing to bring their guns were subject to a three shilling fine.
"Frankly, if some of the gun nuts among us are so paranoid as to fear being confronted by an axe-wielding maniac in church, or a football game, or at a speech by the governor inside City Hall, might one suggest to them that they just stay home and avoid such fearful places? -- Do armed criminals avoid such places?

"Joseph E. Sullivan, Director of Compliance and Law Enforcement Relations, Senior Counsel, Trust and Safety for online auction powerhouse eBay, recently addressed a group of law enforcement officials regarding eBay's policies for cooperating with government investigations. Below are verbatim quotations from his briefing at the recent CyberCrime 2003 conference:"
"We [eBay] try to make rules to make it difficult for people to commit fraud and easy for you [law enforcement agencies] to investigate. One is our Privacy policy. I know from investigating eBay fraud cases that eBay has probably the most generous policy of any internet company when it comes to sharing information. [emphasis added]"
"We do not require a subpoena except for very limited circumstances. We require a subpoena when we need the financial information from the site, credit card info or sometimes IP information."
------- How sad that eBay holds the value of state power over the value of individual privacy rights. |

"Soon, in order to earn the attention of the FBI and the New COINTELPRO under the Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003 -- which Bush will insist be passed soon after Iraq is invaded -- you won't even need to be a member of one of the above mentioned groups. All you will need do is agree with the philosophy of 'the extreme fringes of animal rights, pro-life, environmental, anti-nuclear, and other political and social movements.' "
"In the not too distant future thought crime alone will be enough to earn you the black mark of a 'lone extremist' in the eyes of Ashcroft, Bush, the FBI, and the emerging Ministry of Homeland Security."

"Guns pretty much ceased to be a part of my life when I came to Japan. In fact, I don't recall ever having heard a gun being fired in this country" ...
"I choose to raise this point because Japan is supposed to be in the midst of a serious crime wave."
"As discouraging as that may appear, one shudders to think how much worse things would be if criminals could get their hands on guns."
------- Is it really so much more desirable to be stabbed to death? Apparently, to this author skyrocketing crime is acceptable as long as he doesn't have to hear the sound of a gun. |

"Steve Reed didn't think he would need his gun at Disneyland. Thankfully, he was right. But the fact that Steve walked around the Happiest Place on Earth for several days with a loaded gun hidden under his Mickey Mouse sweat shirt was scary -- especially to Steve."
" 'I'm a retired cop, and I'm licensed to carry a concealed weapon,' Steve said. 'But I didn't expect to walk right into Disneyland and not be challenged. I expected them to pat me down or wand me and tell me to put my gun in a locker. That never happened. It made me wonder who else is walking around Disneyland with God knows what under their sweat shirt.' "
------- Why is the idea that another law-abiding, well-trained citizen other than himself could be walking around armed so abhorrent to this hypocrite? |

"Quite frankly, I'd place my faith in properly trained law enforcement officers and school staff who have thought through these situations much more thoroughly before relying on an armed and untrained citizen... The gun lobby needs to understand that it's not all about their rights, but the rights of all of us to feel safe and secure."
------- And you, sir, should realize that your feelings and preferences have nothing to do with the established fact that armed citizens save lives every day. |

"As the horrible consequences of gun control play out today in Great Britain, it is important to remember that this dilemma started with the euphemistic "sensible first step." It began with firearms training requirements and government-mandated storage standards, progressed to home inspections and gun owner licensing, continued with the registration of firearms and their owners and culminated in firearms confiscation. Each "sensible" step was followed by another step, and yet another, until law-abiding gun owners were forced into the final step -- forfeiting their personal property and, with it, their means of defending themselves and their families. After suffering every gun control scheme that prohibitionists could devise, the British are now suffering from a surging wave of violent gun crimes and armed criminals are responsible. How could this happen?" |

'Were equipped and trained to handle that and the average citizen is not. Thats a decision they have to make we dont recommend it, especially if someone is armed with a weapon,' he said. 'You can always replace property.' "
------- Equipped and trained?
