"The National Rifle Association likes to wrap itself in the American flag and portray itself as the last line of defense against terrorism as well as the ultimate defenders of America's freedom."

"What price freedom? According to the NRA, asking for two cents from people who want to buy explosives is too much."

"The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that the NRA is in a dither over a Bush Administration recommendation to enact a user fee of two cents per pound of explosives to fund the Justice Department Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, because explosives that warrant the user fee might include gunpowder. Translated to a purchase of ammunition, the fee would amount to slightly less than a penny per $7 box of .38 slugs."

-------
KABA Note: No. Extorting ANY amount of money from people who merely wish to exercise their fundamental rights to fund an entity which threatens to destroy those rights is indecent.

"My position on this issue is a divided one. Guns in America are like Weird Al Yankovic at the Grammys: Sure they're invited, but should they really be there? They're constitutionally protected, which is hard to mess with. They are considered a right, and since many of our civil liberties are similarly given through this almost sacred document, firearms should be treated as any other right. Logically, though, and without a second thought of historical significance or American policy, guns in the sense of humanity are not necessary. ..."

"Shooting for sport is pretty much the only thing I would see as being a culpable excuse for owning a gun. ..." -- KABA Reply: Congratulations. You and the Nazis have something in common.

"Do minorities have a moral rightand even a moral dutyto resist mob violence? The history of black people in America over the past century suggests that doing so may be necessary in order to protect civil rights." ...

"Sometimes, as in Memphis, the mere presence of armed blacks constrained white police or mob behavior. In other cases, armed blacks were partially successful; during the 1906 Atlanta riots, according to historian John Dittmer's Black Georgia in the Progressive Era, although blacks 'were unable to offer effective resistance when trapped downtown or caught in white sections of the city, they did fight back successfully when the mobs invaded their neighborhoods.' "I found the opinion 'Lose the First Amendment? We're as good as lost' interesting, not because a journalist was lamenting the opinions of a some teens that the First Amendment 'goes too far' - because after all, the First Amendment IS a journalist's bread and butter, and without it, many would be censored for writing 'not-government-approved' news and opinions!"

"Mainly, I found the opinion interesting, because for too many years, too many journalists have been openly hostile to the Second Amendment ...Because of decades of hacking and chopping at the Second Amendment, the rest of the Constitution has been chipped away also - because if gun control can be enacted by a bare majority, overriding a Constitutional Amendment - then ANY of the Amendments can be set aside!"

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Some writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins ... Society is in every state a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one. THOMAS PAINE
