"While National Rifle Association officials have been denying that they've been orchestrating a sellout in the U.S. Senate, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) -- an NRA Director -- has been working on an ammunition ban. On the Senate floor today, he introduced, discussed, defended and tried to justify the 'Craig/Frist' amendment. This amendment, said Craig, is needed 'to strengthen current armor piercing ammunition law.' NRA's point-man in the U.S. Senate says that this is 'what the law enforcement community needs.' "
" 'We don't want to wipe out the hunting and sporting ammunition,' said Craig. The 'sporting purpose' test was used before -- as justification for firearm rights infringements via the 1938 Nazi Weapons Law ..." ... |

"The GOP-controlled Senate voted 70-27 to require all handguns sold in the United States to have child safety locks, adding the measure to the legislation providing the gun industry immunity from suits when a legally sold gun is subsequently used in a crime."
"Democratic Sens. Barbara Boxer of California and Herb Kohl of Wisconsin argued that requiring child safety locks on newly purchased handguns would help reduce the number of children accidentally killed by handguns in the home. Every 48 hours, a child is killed through an accidental shooting, Boxer said."

"Senate Democrats hope to complicate the future of a Republican-led bill that would shield gun manufacturers and distributors from lawsuits arising from crimes in which guns were used." ...
"Renewing the 1994 prohibition against "assault weapons" has been a Democrat priority this year. They picked up support Tuesday from GOP Sens. John Warner of Virginia, Mike DeWine of Ohio and Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island.
" 'Although I voted against the ban a decade ago, over the past 10 years it has reduced crime dramatically and has made our streets safer,' Warner said. 'The legislation also has protected the rights of gun owners better than many of us predicted.' "

"Chuck Canterbury, national president of the Grand Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police, urged all F.O.P. members and other law enforcement officers to contact their Senators and ask them to vote in favor of Senate Amendment 2623, the 'Steve Young Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act,' which was offered today to S. 1805, the 'Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.' "
"The amendment is virtually identical to the F.O.P.'s top legislative priority, S. 253, and would exempt qualified active and retired law enforcement officers from State and local prohibitions with respect to the carrying of concealed firearms."
------- In other words, it would create an elite class of citizen.

Watkins made national headlines last October when he asked a teenager to stop riding his wheelchair in the streets. Watkins said he was concerned about the boy's safety and threatened him with fines.

"The American public should know that a small number of federally licensed gun dealers supplied one of every five guns traced to crimes nationwide yet remain in business. "Gun ownership is extremely important to some people, and often they're not aware of why. To most, the gun means added power, something that erases all feelings of inferiority, weakness, vulnerability and impotence. It's not irrelevant that guns, in themselves, are so frequently linked to sexuality and the male sex organ. Think of the many slang terms common to both sex and guns, and the relationship becomes obvious. Guns have been accurately called 'the great equalizer.' "
"Some of this exaggerated need for protection -- and fear of what might happen were they not to have this -- might have been carried over from experiences in early childhood, at a time when they truly were weak, small and vulnerable to attack. If a boy were abused or brutalized in his youth by bullies or by bullying parents, it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that he might still bear feelings of anger and resentment and a desire for an assurance that no one could ever humiliate or hurt him again."

D.C.'s police chief says Senator Orrin Hatch will give some thought to withdrawing his amendment that would overturn the city's handgun ban - but made no promises.
Charles Ramsey and Mayor Anthony Williams met with the Utah Republican Wednesday asking him not to try to repeal the city's handgun ban. Hatch's amendment is part of a bill that would protect gun manufacturers from lawsuits over gun crimes. The bill has already won the support of 75 senators in a test vote.

"Rep. James Langevin played host on Monday to a panel discussion on the controversial USA Patriot Act. The six experts and activists on the stage at North Kingstown High School argued back and forth over some of the provisions in the act and whether or not it infringes upon the civil liberties protected in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights."
"But both the pro-Patriot Act and the anti-Patriot Act panelists glossed over the most important topic of all, the pervasive climate of fear and suspicion that enveloped the nation in the weeks and months after Sept. 11." |

"While most Americans favor the idea of the U.S. Patriot Act, many don't know what it says or does, it was reported Thursday."
"With its poll showing widespread support of the idea, USA Today says there is a widespread confusing, troubling feeling about the law that gives federal agents more latitude to spy on U.S. citizens and non-citizens while hunting terrorists." |

John Bonacic, a Republican from Orange County. Bruno spokesman Mark Hansen later confirmed his boss's opposition to the fee increase." |

"So, state Sen. Mike Waddoups introduced Senate Bill 48 in order to strip the University of Utah of its right to keep concealed weapons off its campus. Then he opposed an amendment to the bill that would allow private property owners to ban guns from their own premises."
"Waddoups says such restrictions would create a big problem for the state's 50,000-odd (pun intended) concealed-carry permit holders. Did it ever occur to him that having 50,000 paranoid, would-be Rambos (remember pistol-shootin' former legislator David Bresnahan?) running around might be a big problem for the rest of us 2 million Utahns?"
------- And did it ever occur to this letter writer that calling those who choose to carry concealed paranoid, while ignoring the fact that concealed carry has not caused a problem in ANY of the states in the Union, is the height of hypocrisy? |

"A man who ran a 'major firearm conversion factory' in his terrace home was jailed today for nine years."
"Jobless Paul Henry Packham was found with an illegal cache of weapons, ammunition and drugs including stun guns, CS spray canisters and more than 60 pistols at his home."
"Officers also found two hydroponic systems for growing cannabis, and a workshop equipped to convert blank firing guns into lethal weapons, together with facilities to make ammunitions for the converted handguns."
"The arsenal and cannabis factory were found during an early morning raid on November 6 last year by detectives and specialist firearms officers from the Mets Central Task Force."
------- In the "gun-free" UK? This just proves that despite the ban, where there is a demand, there will always be a supply. |

"Debating a bill to give the gun industry broad immunity from civil lawsuits, the U.S. Senate on Thursday rejected a proposal that would have guaranteed families of victims of the 2002 Washington area snipers could pursue their cases in court."
"Earlier, in a rare victory for gun control advocates, the Senate voted 70-27 to require handguns to be sold with a trigger lock or similar child safety device."
------- This device can later be "defined" by bureaucrats. Leave this amendment in and get a gun grabber in charge of the rule making over at the Consumer Product Safety Commission and BINGO, no more handguns. |
