As someone who was raped once on campus, Im convinced that women should have the right to carry firearms to defend themselves from violent attack. The State of Florida disagrees with me.
I know from experience that criminals ignore laws. I dont want to be raped at school again simply because I was forced by law to leave my gun in my car. No one should.
Unfortunately, politicians are making more victims as elected officials trade favors. That sounds harsh, but you dont know the half of it. |

I served 20 years in the U.S. Navy protecting your right to "bare arms," or was it to "arm bears."
We keep getting it pounded down our throats that everyone should be armed because the bad guys are armed.
In reality, every armed individual is someone just waiting to become a criminal.
If you believe so strongly in the Second Amendment, then you should arm yourself with a musket and a flintlock pistol, because that is what the founders had in mind when they established the Constitution. |

The leading voice of advocates of the Second Amendment is standing firmly behind the Constitutional Carry Bill which now sits on the desk of Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.
Lawmakers in both chambers approved the legislation which removes the requirement for a permit to carry a concealed firearm in West Virginia for those over the age of 21. |

While it was an odd day for political endorsements, it was a good day for Second Amendment supporters in Virginia, where Democratic Governor Terry McAuliffe signed the various gun bills that comprised the deal into law. The compromise drafted between Democrats and Republicans in the legislature allows more out-of-state concealed carry holders to exercise their rights in the Commonwealth, requires State Police to be present at gun shows for voluntary background checks, and prevents those slapped with protective orders from carrying firearms. |

The first change actually made this week is that Florida has removed the crime of aggravated assault from among the gun crimes that fall subject to the states infamous 10-20-Life mandatory minimum sentencing requirement. Well cover that change in this post. (Weve previously written on proposals for this change, here: Changes Proposed to Floridas Infamous 10-20-Life Sentencing Law.) |

San Francisco police are welcoming the chance to become the countrys biggest smart gun proving site as police chief Greg Suhr offered to equip the departments tech heads with the weapons in a speech this week.
Officer safety is huge, so you wouldnt want to compel that upon officers, Suhr told audiences at a smart gun symposium in San Francisco. But we have so many officers who are so into technology, I am all but certain there are officers that would be willing to do such a pilot.
The weapons could only be fired by an authenticated owner, which Suhr reasonably called a good thing for law enforcement. |

Charges against a juvenile murder suspect in Lubbock were dropped Thursday according to an official with the 364th State District Court.
The suspect was never publicly named because she was a juvenile at the time of the incident.
Alize Henderson, 17, died after a stabbing in the 2600 block of East Auburn Street.
Justice is not being done, Hendersons father, Ivan Williams said.
Williams said the prosecutors felt like a self-defense argument would work if the case went to trial. |

In 1986, Congress passed the Firearm Owners Protection Act (FOPA), which included protections for individuals transporting firearms between places where they are legally allowed to have them (18 U.S.C. 926A). While most states comply with FOPAs safe passage provision, some states continue to harass and detain travelers who are abiding by federal law, Griffith said. Because of numerous improper prosecutions, a cottage industry of lawyers handling the defense of these cases has developed around New York City airports.
Griffiths amendment puts an end to these practices and makes it clear that the rights of American citizens can no longer be ignored, according to a press release from Griffiths office. |

A bill that would have allowed residents to carry concealed firearms to state or local government meetings was defeated Friday without getting a vote in the state Senate.
House Bill 86, which passed the House earlier this week on a 50-10 vote, failed to meet a legislative deadline requiring bills to be voted out of committee by the end of the day.
The controversial proposal was the only bill introduced this legislative session that sought to expand when and where residents can carry guns.

The legislation is one of several gun bills making their way through the Arizona Legislature. Other efforts include limiting the enforcement of new federal firearms laws and reinforcing the right to carry concealed weapons on public sidewalks and streets that cut through schools and universities.
The bill given early approval Thursday would establish Arizona as the first in an interstate compact that other states could join. The compact would nullify and repeal any current or future law that impedes Second Amendment rights, such as mandatory background checks. |

From 2010 to 2014, students experienced an almost doubling in violent crimes on campus. We are experiencing a dramatic increase in violent crimes against Georgias students as criminals prey upon our students because they are defenseless. Providing a safe environment for all Georgians is at the heart of the Campus Safety Act, or HB 859. This bill gives those Georgians who have a Georgia Weapons Carry License (GWCL) the choice to carry their handgun concealed on a public college or university campus and defend themselves against these criminals. |

It's not over until it's over. But with any luck, the 2016 legislative session will be best remembered for the bad ideas state lawmakers are killing rather than for the good public policy they are approving. With two weeks left before the scheduled adjournment, let's hope the dead are not miraculously brought back to life and that the trend continues. |

But the Hawaii bill wasn't without opposition. Dozens of Hawaii residents spoke out against the law, saying it was vague and could prevent legal gun owners from protecting themselves in emergency situations.
"I cannot be denied the right to protect my family from an intruder into my home because I have a few beers," Jeff Ball said in opposition to the bill. "Would I need to hand the gun to my child and tell him or her to defend us?"
Harvey Gerwig, president of the Hawaii Rifle Association, said the bill could be problematic because drugs can't be tested by law enforcement on the spot. He said it could also incriminate Hawaii residents who own guns and drink alcohol at home. |

A federal appeals court Friday said it will hear arguments in June in the battle about a 2011 Florida law that restricts doctors from asking questions and recording information about patients' gun ownership.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals scheduled the arguments for June 21 in Atlanta, according to a document posted on the court's website.
A three-judge panel has issued three rulings that upheld the law, with the most-recent ruling in December.
But the full appeals court then decided to take up the issue in what is known as an en banc proceeding. |

It was the kind of rhetoric that seemed out-of-place at an institution of higher learning.
Be careful discussing sensitive topics.
Drop certain topics from your curriculum.
DO NOT confront a student.
In this case, it was the University of Houston advising its educators how to teach when a new Texas law takes effect Aug. 1 that will allow students who are licensed to carry concealed weapons on campus. |

According to Fox 17, the experiment was conducted in Texas and it involved eight children, all of them [were] either preschool or kindergarten age.
The eight children were left together in a room with a fake gun that looks authentic, but could not be fired. One of the children picked up the gun within 15 seconds and began passing it around to others. Others then pointed the gun at the rest of the children in the room and pretended to be shooting.
Six of the eight children handled the gun, and all six of these children come from homes that have no guns. The two children who refused to touch the gun came from homes where their parents own guns. |

One name I have not seen on any of these lists, but which has been mentioned as a possible pick for Hillary, is that of Barack Obama himself. There is nothing in the Constitution to prevent a president from appointing himself to the Supreme Court. Of course, he would have to get Senate approval, and the idea of Joe Biden stepping up to the presidency, even for a very short time, would play in, but its not beyond possibility, especially if his first pick were to be stymied. Obama could appoint himself and make the presidential and Senate races all about him. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd. Alexis de Tocqueville |
