"A man who says he shot a man while defending his apartment against intruders has been found not guilty of murder."

"Officials say the case has brought the little-known 'defense of habitation' statute into play for perhaps the first time in Durham."

"Kennis Thaxton shot 18-year-old Abdullah Ali Helms twice in the back in June 2002, killing the teenager. He says Helms and another man barged into his apartment and that he thought Helms was going for a gun."

"The defense of habitation statute says homeowners may use any degree of force to prevent an illegal intrusion into their residences or to oust an intruder. But homeowners have to fear for their physical well-being or believe the intruder will commit a felony."

"Chief Constable Steve Green has taken the bold step of showing what his officers are up against - by publishing a report which is normally reserved for police top brass. And while it shows overall crime is falling, and detection rates are up, the report also highlights an upsurge in the most violent types of crime. Drugs and guns cast a huge shadow over the positives contained within the report. Mr Green says the public needs to know the everyday problems facing his officers. That was why he presented the report - which has been vetted for sensitive information - to the Notts Police Authority this week. He points out that much gun crime is confined to the armed criminals who choose an illegal way of life. But it touches on many aspects of crime which affect us all. It reveals how young women are continuing to be drawn into a world of prostitution- and how the sale of drugs is an ongoing problem across the county. The report also highlights a rise in racist and homophobic crime."

An 11-year-old boy was arrested for bringing two guns to school, authorities said.

Police said the boy brought the guns to Four Corners Elementary School in Salem to show a friend.

On Thursday, the boy, whose name hasnt been released, arrived at the school with a non-functioning 22-caliber handgun, an empty pistol magazine and numerous rounds from various caliber handguns.

The day before, the student brought a different hand gun to school--that gun was loaded and working, police said.

Investigators searching the student's Salem residence found the two weapons and additional guns.

The boy's access to the guns is part of a pending investigation.

"Rep. Mike Castle has introduced legislation that would extend the ban on assault weapons for another 10 years and close a loophole that allows people to buy firearms at gun shows without undergoing background checks."

"The ban is set to expire in September and Castle said he fears criminals with Uzis and AK-47s will be out on the streets again unless the law is extended."

"The Republican congressman, who introduced the bill Wednesday with Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., acknowledged he faces an uphill battle in the House, where GOP leaders don't want to bring the bill to a vote. The National Rifle Association, a major contributor to conservative Congress members, strongly opposes the legislation."

-------
As do millions of American citizens who understand that the ban was useless. Even the CDC couldn't find evidence that it was effective.

"One of my all-time favorite hunting rifles was a Mannlicher-style .308 Sako carbine that I used through the 1970s and '80s. It delivered honest minute-of-angle accuracy with loads it liked and was a joy to carry afield. I killed a lot of deer with that little 6 1/2-pound carbine before swapping it in an ill-advised trade."

"I visited Sako's Riihimaki plant a few years ago and was highly impressed with the attention to detail the workers displayed. Manufacturing standards are extremely high, and the employees are justly proud of the fine rifles they make."

"When I recently tested Sako's Finnfire Hunter, I learned the same exacting standards applied to Sako rimfire rifles."

A state trooper involved in a fatal shooting in Metairie last month has resigned from the force.

Heath Schumacher remains under administrative investigation for the shooting death of his live-in girlfriend, Tamatha Osbourne, 33. He had been on leave during the investigation.

Col. Henry Whitehorn, head of State Police, has said it appears that Schumacher's relationship with Osbourne violated agency policy. Osbourne was a drug informant.

Authorities said Schumacher killed Osbourne at a Metairie apartment complex on Jan. 11, but claimed it was in self-defense. No charges have been filed.

Schumacher told investigators that Osbourne first pointed a weapon at him and fired. Authorities found two semiautomatic handguns at the scene.

"The Stanleys said there are five areas on the body that women can strike to immobilize their attackers: the eyes, throat, ears, nose and groin. The couple demonstrated different techniques from each area. Stanley told the women that if an attacker puts his hands on their shirt lapels, they should stick their fingers in his eyes to temporarily blind him and give them enough time to escape."

"Stanley advised the women not to put their hands on the attacker's arms, because he could easily overtake them in that position."

"The Stanleys said the self-defense move probably most effective for a woman to perform on a man is the knee blow to the groin."

I'm changing my name to "Gun Dealer." I can't wait nobody will be able to sue me, even if I sell sniper rifles to criminals. All I'll have to do is say "oops, I lost the guns," and I'll be immune in court. Finally, my dream will be realized personal responsibility for everyone but me.

I wish this were a joke, but it's not. It's legislation before the U.S. Senate right now, with almost 60 NRA shills on board, including Sen. Norm Coleman. Call Sen. Mark Dayton today at 202-224-3244 to urge him to filibuster.

"...when we begin talking about real guns capable of taking life or causing serious injury, we agree with county attorney Jim Reams that the state Legislature should think about making possession of a gun at school a criminal act. Current federal law regarding guns at school reiterates other weapons laws and requires states and school districts to have guidelines in place, but, ultimately, puts most of the responsibility for keeping weapons out of schools on the backs of educators. We believe our law enforcers need legislation with some teeth."

"President Bush has long been on record supporting two crucial gun-control measures: the renewal of the assault weapons ban, which has been the law for 10 years, and a new law to close the loophole that shady dealers can use to slip weapons to buyers at gun shows. For an equally long time, he did nothing to back up his words. Now, in the early days of his re-election campaign, Mr. Bush has finally acted.
