Refuting The New York Times' Anti-Gun Bias (OFCC)

"The New York Times published an editorial this past Tuesday entitled 'A Day Without Guns'. You will not be surprised to learn that this piece of anti-gun drivel did not think much of concealed carry legislation. In particular, it insanely tried to call into question the effectiveness of Floridas concealed carry laws by offering inconsequential statistics regrettably showing that a meager handful of Concealed Handgun Licenses were granted to those that should not have received them. However, what is more interesting to note is what they didn't say. Despite the fact that Florida has over 410,000 legally licensed citizens, the editorial did not cite one instance of where a crime was committed by them even by the few that were licensed in error." ...

"As I mentioned in previous comments on S. 388. . . the very idea of carrying weapons made uniform nationwide can impeach the need for many social programs which are based on a theory of violence."

"Could it all really happen?"

"Yes. Because most social programs are based on a lie, and impeaching the lie will starve them to death. The rest will take care of itself." ...

"S. 388 is a move in the right direction because . . . it begins a journey to put it back the way it was." ...

"Since you carry a gun for self-defense or to save the life of another, then you are concerned with combative firearms skills rather than shooting merely for the experience of shooting. To reach this goal, you engage in training, mostly in the form of practice on a range. How close you get to your goal will depend on the effectiveness of your training."

"Let's use weight lifting and body building as an analogy. If you want to get bigger and stronger, we know that you have to concentrate on working the large muscle groups ..." ...

"Now, go to any range and watch people there. Youll see a great deal of shooting for tiny groups ... You'll see people shooting at ten to thirty yards, rather than at zero to seven yards. ..." ...

"American entrepreneurs and defenders of individual Second Amendment civil rights: Be warned!"

"New Yorks Sen. Chuck Schumer is the author of a legislative proposal which targets American business as well as the individual Second Amendment civil right of law-abiding American citizens to keep and bear arms." ...

"Schumers monstrosity ... would allow city governments to use federal criminal statistical data in third party civil lawsuits against private businesses."

"There is a dangerous theory underlying the proposal. Under this theory, a business may be held liable in civil court for crimes perpetrated by a first, second or third purchaser or thief of a perfectly legal product. ..." ...

"In a Jan. 23rd page 1 story, The Bulletin reports that our mayor is joining 140 other mayors in the National Summit Against Illegal Guns. (Notice, it isn't the Anti-Crime Summit, because, the real target isn't crime and criminals but the Second Amendment.)"

"The mayor noted that, 'We want to show the people in Washington mayors are in support of tougher laws for illegal guns.'"

"At another anti-gun conference Police Commissioner Johnson said that, 'Straw purchasing is one of the things really devastating us.' ..." ...

"So there we are: The mayoral candidates, many of whom hold public office, the sitting mayor and the sitting police commissioner all railing against illegal guns. Not one word against criminals. Not a peep." ...

"A pizza deliveryman who has shot two people on the job in the past seven months was hit with his first criminal charge Wednesday: carrying a concealed weapon."

"Andres Vegas, 46, who told authorities that the teenagers he shot last month and in July were trying to rob him ... faces up to nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor. ..."

"... As [Vegas] got out of his car, he was approached by an armed assailant. Vegas then reached into his car's passenger seat, got his .32 semi-automatic pistol and shot his assailant, the complaint says; he then waited for police."

"... because Vegas' gun had been on 'the front passenger seat beside the pizzas,' it met the definition of a concealed weapon." ...

"Saying Minnesotans have a right to defend themselves, an area lawmaker is planning to announce legislation today that would make it easier for people to use deadly force when threatened."

The bill substantially broadens peoples rights to use deadly force in their home, business or personal vehicle. It also lowers the threshold for when deadly force can be used in public places when they feel threatened with bodily harm."

"In respect of gun control, we don't mind saying that it's not the issue that keeps us up at night. But as an emblem of the irrational streak in our political debate these days, it's without peer, a point about which we were reminded by the editorial in Tuesday's Times, "A Day Without Guns ." It was arguing, if that's the word, against Florida's liberalized concealed carry laws. Basing its comments on research done by the Florida Sun-Sentinel that showed some criminals in Florida have gotten permits to carry concealed weapons, the Times decried the state Legislature's 'gruesome handiwork.' It chided the 'corrupt and cowardly' legislators who refused to 'undo these lethal threats' created by legal concealed carry." ...

"It is once again time to revisit the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which the National Rifle Association and gun aficionados such as Vice President Dick Cheney perpetually cite to justify their right to own and carry firearms. The Second Amendment ... was among the first of our amendments to the Constitution and was ratified in 1791."

"Students of American history know that our forefathers were concerned that, after getting rid of King George III, each state needed to be protected against any future tyrannical ruler and thus be free to bear arms accordingly. Our National Guard is today's militia. It is just plain hokum to use the Second Amendment as justification for private citizens to own guns."

The father of a man facing charges for allegedly shooting an intruder in self-defence in his Auckland gun shop says he is heartened by a judge's comments.

Greg Carvell is accused of shooting Ricky Beckham, 29, in the stomach as Beckham advanced on him with a machete at Small Arms International in Penrose last July.

Beckham was sentenced to two years and nine months' jail in the High Court in Auckland on Friday.

Mr Carvell's father, Ray, who was at the sentencing, says he is pleased at the critical comments Justice Rhys Harrison made over charges laid against his son.

Ray Carvell says his son is due to appear in court again later this month on a firearms charge.
