Police across the United States are rethinking how they use force amid national outrage about questionable shootings and violent arrests. The changes include efforts in Dallas to train officers to de-escalate situations by moving backward during target practice and arming some with sponge projectiles rather than guns. In Camden County, N.J., officers are taught about the sanctity of life and encouraged to take time to defuse a situation, even if a suspect is wildly waving a knife at them.

Public hunting access to South Dakotas school and public lands could get a little tougher if a recently filed senate bill becomes law.
Senate Bill 78 sponsored by Sen. Betty Olson, R-Prairie City, if passed through the legislature, would require the Game, Fish and Parks Department to pay for every acre of school and public lands shown on the departments public land hunting atlas or any other map published by a state department that says the land is open to public hunting.

The words less lethal are emblazoned on the new shotguns the Aroostook County Sheriff's Department just received. The guns are meant for certain situations the Deputy Sheriff's could encounter.
Sheriff Darrell Crandall says, "Someone not actively pursuing anybody with a weapon but they may have a knife or a sword or a bat and they're swinging it. That's a situation you can't allow to escalate."

A proposal to reopen a season for hunting bobcats in New Hampshire drew plenty of opposition as well as some support at a packed public hearing Monday night, but the hours of public discussion showed a secondary issue: whether the controversy might spur bigger changes.
The (Fish and Game) Commission shot themselves in the foot with this, argued John Harrigan of Colebrook, a well-known outdoorsman and hunter due to his years writing for the Union Leader and other outlets.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved legislation Tuesday requiring strict lock-up of firearms in vehicles parked in San Francisco.
The ordinance came in response to a number of high-profile shootings in San Francisco last year, including the death of a young woman shot in July with a gun stolen from a federal agent's car. The killing of 32-year-old Kate Steinle sparked a national debate over immigration because the shooter was a Mexican national released from a city jail despite federal requests to detain him for deportation. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942. (Source: "Hitler's Table-Talk at the Fuehrer's Headquarters 1941-1942", Dr. Henry Picker, ed. (Athenaeum Verlag, Bonn, 1951).) |
