Sen. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, says a bill he filed this week is all about restoring civil liberties. Under SB 610, businesses that ban guns could be sued by gun permit holders injured on their property.

If youre denying my [Second Amendment] right you have a cause of action against that business for denying that right, Steube said.

The bill would open up to lawsuits businesses such as Walt Disney, which recently halted a man trying to bring a gun into one of its parks. But Steube says he hasnt heard from any business groups opposed to it yet.

He eventually began working for Motrolla as a software engineer, before starting his own business a few years later.

The NRA was supportive, of course thats why it exists. But so was the American Civil Liberties Union. So were a host of disability groups. So was much of the medical community. And, unusually for a Second Amendment question, this one didnt break down along the usual political lines.

The House voted to roll back an Obama era regulation that mandated the Social Security Administration reveal information about people with mental illness through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The measure passed 235 to 180.

The intention of the regulation, put forth during the final days of President Obamas term, instructed the SSA to show information about individuals with mental illnesses would be deemed incapable of owning a firearm.

However, critics of the rule say that the SSA went out of bounds with the regulation and denied due process to Americans with disabilities.

For the last several years, so-called Firearms Freedom Acts or Second Amendment Preservation Acts have attracted a lot of attention. Such legislation, passed or introduced in various states, seeks to make federal laws regarding firearms inapplicable to firearms and ammunition produced, sold, and used exclusively within the states borders on the premise that Congresss power to regulate commerce among the states doesnt reach purely in-state activities.

Quickly backed by the National Rifle Association, President Trumps Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch is also getting applause from San Diego gun owners who want Californias six tough new gun laws to be challenged in the High Court.

At a shooting range in San Diegos East County, a half-dozen gun enthusiasts said Gorsuch had given them hope amid what has been a losing gun battle.

Ivanovs hardly the first criminal to endorse the grand disarmament plan. And hes hardly the first one to blame lax gun laws for his actions.

Robyn Anderson testified in a Colorado House Judiciary hearing that expanded background checks would serve to inhibit gun purchases. Not by criminals, of course. Thats what she was when she acted as a straw purchaser for Columbine killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. She knowingly bought guns for minors who could not have passed a check. Yet she was credited with turning the tide to pass a gun show background check expansion bill affecting those who would.

Advocates for and against gun control agree on this much: Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch is a "pro-gun" judge and the proof is a 2012 court case in which he sided with a felon busted with a gun.

As a Circuit Court judge, Gorsuch found an unusual argument in that case compelling: The felon said he didnt know he was a felon, and was thus unaware that he was barred from having a gun.

The League of Women Voters is not who you think they are. The Florida League of Women Voters is Florida's newest gun ban organization.

A lobbyist representing the League of Women Voters -- Patti Brigham -- isn't registered as a lobbyist with the state, but she shows up in committee to support gun control and oppose Second Amendment rights over and over again.

The League has been working with anti-gun Democrat legislators to write and file gun ban legislation. They work in secret to deny constitutional rights while pretending to be strong constitutionalists in order to solicit memberships and donations from people who have no idea what the League is really doing.

House Republicans overturned an Obama-era rule requiring the Social Security Administration to report anyone unable to manage their own finances to the FBI's background check database. It was deemed that the ability to manage one's own finances was a suitable proxy to identify the severely mentally ill. Supporters of the rule say it helped to plug holes in the background check system. Critics say the rule infringed on a person's constitutional rights without due process. What do you think?

Republican State Senator Robert Ortt, whose district includes parts of Monroe County, says the New York SAFE Act hasnt been living up to its name.

The SAFE Act hasnt done anything to save anybody, Ortt said. I dare anyone to show me a correlation between a reduction in gun violence in New York State and the SAFE Act.

Thats why Ortt is proposing a bill to repeal the SAFE Act exclusively in upstate New York. And, he said, at the request of gun rights advocates, including the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, he is going to amend the bill to call for a repeal everywhere in the state except New York City.

An appeals court Friday rejected a lawsuit filed by gun-rights groups that challenged the city of Tallahassee over decades-old firearms ordinances that conflict with state law.

A panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal, in a 25-page ruling, said the ordinances, while still on the books, are "null and void" because of the state law and that the city has not sought to enforce them.

It upheld a decision by a Leon County circuit judge who turned down arguments by the groups Florida Carry, Inc. and The Second Amendment Foundation, Inc. that the city should be required to repeal the ordinances and should be blocked from enforcing them.

Lawmakers in both states this week gave a thumbs up to legislation allowing lawful carry of concealed handguns on public college and university campuses.

The Arkansas House approved HB 1249 by a 71-22 vote while in Wyoming HB 136 passed 40-19, in both cases sending the bills to their respective state senates for further consideration. In each instance, the bills were passed largely along party lines in Republican-controlled chambers.

The Arkansas measure is the narrower of the two, tailored to allow faculty and staff to carry on campus provided they have a permit. Republican Rep. Charlie Collins, the sponsor of the bill, argued it could help augment school security.

After Putnam County on Sept. 19 lost an appeal in state court to keep gun-permit records secret, two anonymous gun-rights advocates and an affiliate of the National Rifle Association sued the county in federal court.

County officials didnt seem to mind.

The action began Oct. 21, when two county residents identified as John Doe 1 and John Doe 2, joined by the New York State Pistol and Rifle Association, alleged that release of gun-permit data would violate the Constitution and asked the 2nd U.S. District Court in New York for an injunction.

Outgoing Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe issued an order to ban lead bullets and fishing gear (like sinkers and jig heads) on all agency-managed lands.

The ban requires the use of alternative metals on about 560 million acres of public lands in the United States. It takes effect in 2022, giving hunters, anglers, and the industry time to adapt.

However, the order could be rescinded with a new appointment by the Trump administration. Its unclear if this will happen, but the NRA has already called on Interior Secretary nominee Ryan Zinke to curb the ban.

The Solicitor's Office announced Friday no charges will be filed in the shooting death of Pat Mackey.

Deputies said Mackey, 57, was shot to on Leona Drive on July 27, 2016 and later died at the hospital. The incident reportedly stemmed from an ongoing property disagreement.

Community activist Traci Fant, founder of Freedom Fighters, said there was more to the shooting, though, saying racism and adultery were at play in the altercation.

On Friday, Solicitor David Wagner said based on evidence, the incident was ruled self-defense. He and Anderson County sheriff Chad McBride spoke with Mackey's family following the decision.

SB 160 provides that a gun-free zone store assumes absolute custodial responsibility . . . for the safety and defense of any person who disarms in compliance with the stores policy and who is otherwise licensed to carry a firearm for self-defense. It ensures that the stores liability for failing this responsibility is not limited to actual damages suffered by injured customers who disarmed in accordance with store policy, but also includes such customers reasonable attorney fees, court costs, expert witness costs, and other costs. And it requires any business enacting a gun-free zone policy to clearly display notice of its legal responsibility.

This week, President Trump kept one of his most important campaign promises by nominating an originalist judge Neil Gorsuch to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by Justice Antonin Scalias death last February. Scalia was the courts foremost practitioner of originalism and textualism, judicial philosophies that seek to resolve constitutional questions by reference to the language of the document, as publicly understood at the time of its enactment.

This approach led Scalia to author the historic opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller, which confirmed that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms for defensive purposes.

A somber anniversary Thursday of the Moses Lake school shooting brought on an urgent call for gun safety.

Hearings were held in Olympia on bills that would require the locking up weapons, and enhance background checks for assault weapon sales.

It was, in part, access to family weapons that made it possible for 14-year-old Barry Loukaitis to open fire in Frontier Junior High School 21 years ago. Loukaitis had come to school armed with a rifle and two pistols he brought from home.

Gov. Jay Inslee and state lawmakers are pushing to pass legislation that would force people to store their guns safely and would fix what some call a loophole in the current law, which makes it easier to get an assault weapon than a handgun.

Gun control advocates and Inslee met at the Capitol on Thursday to call for enhanced background checks when buying or selling assault weapons and to enforce safe gun storage.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick (R) has prioritized Senate Bill 16, authored by state Senators Robert Nichols & Joan Huffman, an NRA-backed measure to eliminate the fees for original and renewal Licenses to Carry (LTC) in Texas.

The fee for an original Texas License to Carry (LTC) is among the highest in the nation. No law-abiding Texan should be priced out of the ability to exercise his or her right to self-defense.

Ed.: How about we pass the Constitutional Carry bill first so that Texans *finally* have a right to carry?
