A farmer who chased down a thief and held him at gunpoint until authorities arrived now faces a more serious charge than the thief himself.
Kenneth Englund, 74, was charged with second-degree assault, a felony. The thief, who the sheriff said admitted stealing about $5 worth of gasoline from Englund's neighbor, was charged with misdemeanor theft. |

The right to bear arms is part of the U.S. Bill of Rights, and it is also guaranteed in the Mexican Constitution (Article 10). But Mexican weapons laws are more restrictive than in the U.S. Needless to say, this hasn't prevented Mexican criminals from bearing arms, including rocket launchers and grenades, as recent news reports demonstrate. |

The Forums Jan. 19 article paraphrases Walaker as saying he is against automatic weapons and also against automatic weapons in the hands of criminals. Again, since there arent any automatic weapons around, whats the problem? Is that really all that Walaker and mayors against illegal guns are worried about? Also, as we all know by now, fully automatic weapons are restricted by the National Firearms Act of 1934. The NRA does not favor changing that. |

Also Tuesday, the House Judiciary Committee was scheduled to consider a proposal by Rep. Mike Burris, D-Malvern, that would make it easier to use deadly force in self-defense. The bill would remove the requirement that a person who is attacked has a "duty to retreat" before turning to deadly force. |

"...While the people of other countries, who live under forms of government less free than our own, have been for ages oppressed by taxation, to support large standing armies in periods of peace, our experience has shown that such establishments are unnecessary in a republic. Our standing army is to be found in the bosom of society. It is composed of free citizens, who are ever ready to take up arms in the service of their country when an emergency requires it. Our experience in the war just closed fully confirms the opinion that such an army may be raised upon a few week's notice, and that Our citizen soldiers are equal to any troops in the world...."

A special hearing is scheduled Tuesday on House Bill 1027 by Rep. Mike Burris, D-Malvern. The proposed "Stand Your Ground" law eases the current self-defense law requiring a person to retreat, if possible, before using deadly force in self-defense.
"It's a basic natural right, in my opinion, in regards to you having the ability to protect your family and yourself from people who choose a criminal vocation," Burris said last week. |

We support the Second Amendment to the Constitution and do not believe that sensible gun control and the Constitution are in conflict. We believe gun sales should be subject to a waiting period that allows purchasers' qualifications to be verified. Violations of gun laws should be aggressively investigated and prosecuted. |

When most people think of the National Rifle Association, they more than likely think of one thing -- guns. They might view the NRA as an extremist organization that promotes the use of firearms and shoots down legislation that might restrict the ownership of guns. However, the NRA's Youth Education Summit program is not a political sermon or a recruiting device for the NRA trying to bolster its numbers. |

As a Queens grand jury heard testimony in the Sean Bell shooting case, a dozen members of the New Black Panther Party for Self Defense chanted on the courthouse steps, "Death to police brutality! 50 shots! No more!"
...
"We are not here to stand against the police but to stand for justice," said Al Walker, Bell's uncle, holding his side of the banner against a chilling wind. "We're here to bear moral witnesses, peacefully calling on the police and the district attorney to make changes in their policies so that what happened to Sean will not happen again, not to blacks, not to whites, not to anyone." |

She wanted a store manager to introduce her to the sales clerk who, earlier that weekend, had sold a gun to her 18-year-old son Laurier J. Belanger Jr. Belanger, dark-eyed and handsome, would not be coming in again. He had used the gun to kill himself.
Crowley didn't meet the sales clerk, she met an explanation. The store was obeying the law, the store manager told her. If she thought the law was wrong, she should take it up with her elected officials. |

A revolt against a national driver's license, begun in Maine last month, is quickly spreading to other states. The Maine Legislature on Jan. 26 overwhelmingly passed a resolution objecting to the Real ID Act of 2005. The federal law sets a national standard for driver's licenses and requires states to link their record-keeping systems to national databases. Within a week of Maine's action, lawmakers in Georgia, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, Vermont and Washington state also balked at Real ID. They are expected soon to pass laws or adopt resolutions declining to participate in the federal identification network.

The constitutionality of possible gun abolition would be an issue with many Americans who are law-abiding gun owners. But it is the courts that interpret the Constitution, not the popular vote. The Second Amendment states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." In United States v. Miller, the U.S. Supreme Court interpreted this provision to mean that citizens do not have an individual right to bear arms unless they possess "some reasonable relationship to the preservation or efficiency of a well regulated militia." |

Durango lawyer Matt Kenna is an ACLU member, but said he has never been active further than paying his annual dues. Nonetheless, he also welcomes a local chapter and agrees with the philosophy of the organization.
"All they do is seek to enforce people's rights under the Bill of Rights, and I think it's hard to complain about that much," Kenna said. "I'm a supporter of Second Amendment rights, but also First Amendment rights, Fifth Amendment rights, and anyone should be in favor of enforcing all constitutional rights if you're a true civil libertarian and not a selective civil libertarian." |

What should be done is to eliminate nearly all guns. If there were no guns then the number of murders would be dramatically reduced.
The constitutional Second Amendment that supposedly allows U.S. citizens to own guns is misinterpreted as this amendment was established to assist America in maintaining its freedom from England. |

Not everyone is a fan of a pending bill to expand Colorado's "Make My Day" protections to businesses, but Montrose Police Chief Tom Chinn said he did not believe the measure's passage would necessarily increase violence. House Bill 1011, which passed the House judiciary committee Wednesday, would allow business owners to use deadly force against intruders, in certain circumstances, without fear of prosecution. A provision that would have extended the same protection to vehicles was dropped. |

"...With a corrupt executive, liberty may long retain a trembling existence. With a corrupt legislature, it is impossible: the vitals of the Constitution would be mortified, and death must follow in every step. A government thus formed would be the most formidable curse that could befall this country. Perhaps an enlightened people might timely foresee and correct the error; but if a season was allowed for such a compound to grow and produce its natural fruit, it would either banish liberty, or the people would he driven to exercise their unalienable right, the right of uncivilized nature, and destroy a monster whose voracious and capacious jaws could crush and swallow up themselves and their posterity...." |
