Lawyers for a couple arrested after a Caldwell County sheriffs deputy was wounded early Friday outside their home say the shooting was a case of mistaken identity and classic self-defense, and that the deputy never identified himself until after he was shot. The Caldwell County sheriffs office on Friday said the deputy was seriously wounded by gunfire while responding around midnight to a call about a theft at a home on Hidden Oak Road just outside of Dale, an unincorporated community about 25 miles southeast of Austin. |

As budding journalists, we were taught to be as exact as possible in our stories. Nothing appears as exact as numbers, I reasoned, so I often sought numbers to help tell the story. How much more precise is it to write, for example, The train carrying the Republican legislators had seven coaches, than to say, The train was several cars long? By the way, not one of the dozen reports I saw online (CBS News, Fox, CNN, etc.) told me how many cars made up the train.

A new Rasmussen survey shows President Donald Trump enjoys a higher approval rating following his State of the Union address to 49 percent favorable among likely voters.
That rating could bump higher among Trump followers now that the controversial FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) memo detailing alleged FBI and Justice Department surveillance abuses on what appears to have been questionable grounds. Watch for the presidents supporters to declare that Trump is the victim of a smear campaign. |

Bolt-action rifles are the standard for accuracy, but the lever-action rifle emblemizes American deer hunting. Lever guns are synonymous with the .30-30 cartridge, but standard pistol cartridges are, within limits, equally effective for deer hunting in lever guns, too. In fact, lever guns chambered for pistol cartridges might be even better choices than the .30-30 for deer hunters who typically shoot 75 yards or less, especially if you are sensitive to recoil.

Some people living in Germany feel less safe than they did in the past. At the same time, small arms purchases are on the rise. But experts say a boost in weapons ownership will likely do more harm than good. The number of Germans who have acquired weapons permits has risen considerably over the past two years. Having the requisite documentation allows people in the country to carry things like non-lethal gas pistols in public. In January 2016, just under 301,000 people had such a permit; in December 2017 there were over 557,000. |

Firearms education served as the cornerstone of a seminar Saturday in York County. Attorneys and other experts took questions from the public about concealed carry permits for firearms. Republican State Representative Kristin Phillips-Hill hosted the event at Eureka Volunteer Fire Company. She said laying out the facts is the best way to ensure people who want to legally carry concealed firearms abide by the rules. |

Were a month, more or less, into the new year and America has already suffered two school shootings. As usual, the usual voices are calling for increased restrictions on the buying and selling of guns. But guns are not the problem, a contention I can prove. In 1963, at age 15, I packed my bags and went to l ive with my father in Valdosta, Ga., where I attended Valdosta High School. Hunting being a primary feature of male culture at VHS, I quickly acquired the necessary gear including a Stevens double-barreled shotgun. During deer- and duck-hunting seasons, I rose well before the start of school and joined several buddies out in the field.

A former Border Patrol supervisor and agent was convicted by a San Diego federal jury on seven counts of illegal transportation of firearms and one count of possession of a short-barreled rifle. The verdict was read against Martin Rene Duran on Friday following a three-day trial. This was his second trial in the case; a jury in October could not reach a unanimous verdict and a mistrial was declared. |

A year and a half after he died, I still think about my dad every day. I also think about how I lost him to a devastating epidemic that hurts Americans from all walks of life: firearm suicide. On any given day this crisis takes the lives of 58 people. But for all the heartbreak it causes, there have been too few conversations about how we can help someone in crisis before they pick up a gun. |

Attendance was booming at the start of 36th annual Barre Fish & Game Gun Show at the Barre Municipal Auditorium Saturday. Hundreds of people poured into the auditorium at the start of the two-day show, which runs continues Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking was at a premium outside the venue because of competition for space with a youth hockey tournament at the adjacent BOR ice arena. Organizers seemed pleased with the turnout, with record crowds, vendor tables on two floors and the auditorium stage, and throngs of people filling the aisles.

Firearms company Sig Sauer will soon be making new ammunition at its Jacksonville plant for the growing micro-compact pistol market. The ammo should be available soon in retail outlets, company officials said recently. Sig Sauer's 365 Ammunition in 9mm is specially designed for the small pistols popular with holders of concealed-carry permits. Sig Sauer showed off its latest pistol in the micro-compact category, the P365, at the Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show in Las Vegas last month. A Guns & Ammo magazine review lauded the pistol's design.

When the General Assembly opens its 2018 session Wednesday, lawmakers will be tackling the toughest problems facing the state in an election year that could lead to bitter battles in a sharply divided legislature. Lawmakers have relatively little time before the short session adjourns on May 9, but they will be debating the budget deficit, highway tolls, gas taxes, pensions, bump stocks on guns, gambling, transportation, and legalizing marijuana, among others.

There are still active GoFundMe pages for victims of the Las Vegas mass shooting. Yes, still. More than 500 people were hit with bullets that day. Fifty-eight died. Many of those who survived the shooting are just trying to figure out how to pay their bills. Some are trying to learn to walk. Feed themselves. They will never be OK.
This past week there were three school shootings in America. Maybe you missed them since they don't make headline news very often. It's just part of the risk we endure with all this freedom. People are donating money to pay for the funerals of students in Kentucky.
OK, relax. I have guns, and I don't want anyone to take mine, so let's just get that out of the way. I have a different idea.

Last night, I attended the ALICE community presentation, a joint effort of the Alaska State Troopers, the Fairbanks Police Department, the North Pole Police Department and the school district to present the information, reasoning and training for a shift in active shooter response at schools. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate, which are the key components of the training that empowers individuals to make proactive response decisions rather than follow a passive, mandated, one-size-fits-all response protocol.

As a guy who shoots all the time and writes about shooting and guns when he isnt shooting, Im often asked what I enjoy shooting more than anything else. In a way, thats like asking a grandparent which of his grandchildren he loves most, but Id guess I get more enjoyment shooting the lowly .22 rimfire round more than anything else I shoot. Like almost every other shooter, a .22 was the first gun I shot and like almost every other shooter, I cant imagine life without one.
