The last general answer seems to be a popular subject, especially with the new legislative session: laws concerning open carry and carrying concealed weapons.
...
I however do not understand the need to own an assault rifle for private use, with ammunition that will penetrate body armor. I have met exactly zero criminals who have possessed and have been wearing body armor. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but I have to wonder why someone would purchase ammunition or a weapon for that purpose. Do you need an AR-15 with 30-round clips to defend your house? From what? Terrorists? If you live in the country, then you can maybe justify it. But in an urban environment, I say no.

In front of the White House a man is sitting on a park bench in the throes of depression. He is surrounded by all 43 presidents. In the forefront, purposefully ignoring the depressed man is President Obama, whose right foot is stepping on the Constitution. James Madison is next to Obama, pleading with him to stop. This tableau is called “The Forgotten Man”, a painting by Jon McNaughton, an artist who is known for his politically-charged work. |

Mayor Bloomberg slammed Congress Sunday for not providing federal funding to keep guns out of the wrong hands. Touting a new Super Bowl ad against illegal guns, the mayor said states dont get enough money to perform proper background checks on gun applicants. Federal laws say you can't get a gun if you have a drug problem, psychiatric problem, criminal record or [are a\] minor, and yet Congress doesn't give monies to make sure that we can have a background check, Bloomberg said on Meet the Press. Criminals seeking guns can take advantage of too many loopholes, the mayor said. |

The family of slain Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry has threatened to file a $25 million wrongful death suit against the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, citing the governments role in Terrys death. Brian Terry was killed with an AK47 that was knowingly sold to drug cartels under the Fast and Furious gun-running probe that has been in place for several years now. The 65 page suit was served on the government agency on Wednesday according to attorneys for the family. The complaint contends that not only was the ATF negligent in Terrys death, but at the time, the program is in direct violation of the ATFs own policies and procedures. |

Mark Sprowl ["How many guns are enough?"] cited the recent slaying of a Hanover teen by another teen as a case against the repeal of Virginia's one-gun-a-month law. In our state, one cannot purchase a handgun in a store below the age of 21. Therefore, logic would dictate that the shooter (who was 19) acquired his gun illegally, through a private seller, or by presenting false identification to the store clerk.
Regulations do not stop criminals from getting guns; they simply prevent law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights. |

A Republican leader in the state Assembly, in charge of maintaining order during legislative sessions, has carried a concealed gun during sessions in the Wisconsin Legislature.
Assembly Leader Pro Tempore Bill Kramer, R-Waukesha, told the Associated Press Friday he has carried a concealed Glock 26, a subcompact semi-automatic gun, on the Assembly floor.
Kramer said he received a concealed carry permit before Thanksgiving and needs it because of the atmosphere in the Capitol. He said he has received threatening emails, including one calling for Jesus to return and stab him with a flaming sword. |

Eighty-six-year-old Fred Collins got to his feet Sunday afternoon and urged about 30 of his neighbors to support Rep. Ron Paul of Texas for president.
"He's the only one I'm hearing in Washington standing up for the Constitution," Collins said.
Collins was one of a group of Paul supporters, both old and young, who came out for their candidate and dominated this city's Republican presidential caucus Sunday. The 90-minute Westbrook meeting -- one of many that took place around the state Sunday -- clearly showed why the energized and well-organized Paul campaign is seen as the biggest threat to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's hopes for winning the support of Maine's Republicans. |

Among the slick, million-dollar ads for the likes of Pepsi and Honda during the Super Bowl this Sunday, viewers in Washington will see a far more modest spot. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will be sitting on a couch touting an issue most politicians avoid like the plague: gun control.
The two mayors, whose local teams face off in the big game, are making the pitch for Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), the organization they co-founded in 2006. |

Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. If you want me to do something for you, you have a choice of either convincing me via argument or force me to do your bidding under threat of force. Every human interaction falls into one of those two categories, without exception. Reason or force, that's it.
In a truly moral and civilized society, people exclusively interact through persuasion. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some. |

Classes at John A. Logan College are helping people get the right to carry a concealed handgun in 30 different states. After the class, students are eligible to apply for a permit through the state of Utah. A step that's necessary until Illinois passes a concealed carry law.
Illinois stands alone in its views on concealed carry. It's the only state in the country that doesn't allow it. But that's not stopping these people from getting a concealed carry permit.
"We travel quite a bit from state to state and sometimes you get in a position you'll feel more comfortable with if you had some kind of protection," says student Ray Wiesel. |

An 18-year-old in the Bronx was shot to death in his own home by the NYPD because he ran from police and because an itchy-fingered cop says the suspect/victim reached towards his waistband, meaning he was reaching for a weapon. According the Huffington Post: 18-year-old Ramarley Graham was gunned down Thursday inside the bathroom of his Bronx home following a foot pursuit by a team of plainsclothes cops. He was unarmed. Investigators say police spotted Graham--who's had 8 prior arrests on charges including robbery, marijuana possession and resisting arrest-- on White Plains Road when he started to run. |

With little political capital to lose and millions of his own cash to spend, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is determined to check the role of guns in American society.
A 30-second Super Bowl ad featuring Mr. Bloomberg on a couch with Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will go a long way toward cementing Bloomberg as the king of gun control as the billionaire turns from attacking transfats and smoking to cracking down on illicit sales of firearms, too many of which he says end up in the hands of violent criminals. |

David Kopel said scathingly of the Fix Gun Checks Act, under consideration last year as S.436:
S. 436 violates the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, the Fifth Amendment guarantee of due of law, the Fifth Amendment guarantee of equal protection of the law, and the Tenth Amendment's reservation of state authority over purely intrastate activities. S. 436 further violates the Tenth Amendment by imposing on the vast majority of states an extremely repressive system of restrictions on law-abiding gun owners which those states have already rejected. |
