Shooters love specialized subcategories of firearms. We have truck guns, pocket guns, bear guns, BBQ guns, and the list goes on until we run out of funds or the ability to dream. In the spirit that there is always room for one more niche to mentally fill, I propose an entirely new category of handgun ... the Hitting" Gun. This is separate and distinct from the specialized competition or target pistol, which already has its own niche. |

The city of Ann Arbor is formally weighing in on a legal case before the Michigan Supreme Court regarding whether guns should be allowed in public schools.
The City Council voted unanimously Monday night, Feb. 5, to authorize City Attorney Stephen Postema to file an amicus brief in the case of Michigan Gun Owners Inc. v. Ann Arbor Public Schools.
The city is siding with the school district, which is defending policies it adopted in 2015 banning firearms on school property.
"I am very excited about this opportunity to make the voice of the city of Ann Arbor heard on this important issue," said Mayor Christopher Taylor, calling it crucially important.

The Indiana Senate passed legislation Tuesday that would permit a licensed gun owner to carry a firearm onto church property that also has a school. Current law bars guns on school property but Senate Bill 33 aims to change that, allowing the gun owner to carry the weapon when attending worship, working or volunteering for the church. We need people that are strategically positioned to be able to defend our houses of worship, said Sen. Jack Sandlin, R-Indianapolis, author of the bill.

In a recent rampage school shooting in Benton, Kentucky, a 15-year-old boy killed two classmates and wounded 14 others. One student said that the worst part was hiding and waiting 45 minutes before the police appeared. This illustrates the problem of relying on centralized police to handle rampage shootings. A Sheriff's Department School Resource Officer was at the school at the time. |

The Great American Outdoor Show just gets better every year. If you havent yet attended the world's largest outdoor show, held at the sprawling Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex (Feb. 3 to 11, 2018), make this the year you do. Nine halls of guns, archery, fishing and more await you to ensure your fill of the years newest firearms, gadgets and outdoor equipment, as well as the opportunity to sit in on seminars, special events, and enter to win gear or even a truck. As a gun enthusiast, one of my favorite areas in which to spend time is the firearms hall, where we are able to handle 2018s hottest firearms. |

In a 12-5 vote on Feb. 5, the Westchester County Board of Legislators, BOL, passed a law banning gun shows on county-owned property, codifying an executive order signed earlier this year by County Executive George Latimer, a Democrat. The vote was split down party lines, as the BOLs five Republican county legislators voted against the bill, which will not impact gun shows on properties that the county doesnt own.

An interesting historic discussion of guns and gun control in the Old West published Monday by Smithsonian.com has some remarkable, albeit unintentional, revelations that apparently are aimed at shattering some myths, and it appears as the 50th anniversary of a masterpiece film about that period is looming.
Released in May 1968, Once Upon A Time in the West the classic revenge tale directed by Sergio Leone has garnered a cult following. Its a story about the railroad, gunslingers, outlaws, murder and remorse. One of the main characters is a reformed prostitute, another a nameless harmonica-playing hero out to kill the man who killed his older brother, a slaying shown in flashbacks. |

At one of the first firearms training courses I ever took, I saw an elderly woman struggling with a compact 9 mm pocket pistol. Using every ounce of strength, she inched the heavy handgun slide to the rear. Sometimes, she chambered a round. Other times, she didnt. The Smith & Wesson M&P380 EZ is purpose-built for people like her, people who need a personal-defense pistol that works with their capabilities, not against them. |

New Mexico has some of the most relaxed gun laws in the U.S. Theres no waiting period to buy a firearm, and there arent any state laws restricting what kinds of guns people can own. It is llegal for someone convicted of a felony to have one here, and legislators are working to increase the penalty. But that may not be the kind of law gun-control advocates are looking for. |
