"This week, more than 100,000 people from 30-plus countries packed the Las Vegas Convention Center for the 24th annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trades Show."
"The SHOT Show, where worldwide retailers buy what they hope to sell us next fall, is attended by the oldest and newest manufacturers of anything and everything related to its theme. Hundreds of industry newcomers stood alone and hopeful in modest 10x10-foot booths."

"A Senate committee voted Thursday to give outdoor shooting ranges immunity from noise complaints and lawsuits if they meet new state standards."
"The Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Committee approved the bill on a 4-1 vote, sending it to the full Senate."
"Critics said the bill (SB1008) goes too far, leaving property owners and developers with complaints about shooting range noise with no recourse in the courts and no leverage in negotiations with ranges."
KABA NOTE: This bill is a compromise, backed by the NRA, that leaves the door wide open to place numerous restrictions on shooting ranges that have been in operation for half a century. May the bill and any others like it die a gruesome death until some REAL shooting range protection comes to the Arizona legislature. |

"A federal appeals court nullified part of California's three strikes law Thursday, ruling it is cruel and unusual punishment to sentence people to life in prison for shoplifting."
"The ruling overturns 340 sentences for California defendants serving life terms for shoplifting under the three-strikes law and is expected to spark a wave of appeals by other inmates sentenced to life terms for other nonviolent offenses."
"In the three-strikes case decided in November, the judges did not indicate what sentence would be considered constitutional for shoplifting. That means more litigation will follow in that regard." |

This is a satire that draws more than a few parallels with the gun control movement - not to mention including some wonderful puns! ...
"The Paul Bunyan Campaign for Axe Safety Thursday called on Congress to examine ways in which axes, hatchets, mauls and other handled cutting implements contribute to violence in America."
"The group, long known for its efforts in promoting axe control, cited U.S. Product Safety Commission data showing that 14 children are hurt or killed by axes each day in the U.S., with teenage children particularly at risk."
"How many more children have to die before Congress will enact sensible axe control?" asked Bunyan Campaign Executive Director George Herman "Babe" Bleauoxski. "The time for axe safety is now." |

ANOTHER REPORT IS IN TODAY'S NEWSLINKS, AS WELL....
"A 10-year-old boy was grazed in the right cheek by a bullet when an off-duty police officer conducting a school demonstration dropped her gun Wednesday, officials said."
"The boy was released after treatment at Temple University Children's Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Jennifer McGowan said."
"The officer had shown the magazine clip to the class at Imani Education Circle Charter School and had just put it back in the gun when she dropped the weapon, Principal Francine Fulton said."
Where did this officer get her firearms training? HCI? This story aired on my local Fox channel at the end of the broadcast for less than 30 seconds. If it were a private citizen it would have been emblazoned across the headlines.
KABA NOTE: Why is it that when a stupid fool who happens to have a badge and works for the government shoots a kid in the face, CNN's report is a brief four paragraphs, but when a stupid citizen does the same thing, it's all over creation as "breaking news" -- and the report runs over and over and over again until you've got it memorized? |

The Bill reads, 'a person is guilty of commercial terrorism if he enters or remains unlawfully on the premises or in a building of any business with the intent to interfere with the employees, customers, personnel, or operations of a business.'"

"Denver Police are denying a request to release logsheets for police officers assigned to DIA. It is the latest in a NEWS4 Investigation that uncovered apparent loafing on the part of at least eight officers assigned to the airport."
"We wanted those logsheets so we could compare what officers said they were doing at DIA with what we actually saw and recorded."
KABA NOTE: We'd like the news organization conducting the investigation of these cops to turn over their logsheets to make sure the talking heads aren't loafing at the coffee pot or in the production room. (Can you say, "We ain't got nothin' better to do, so let's harass the cops assigned to the boring, monotonous but necessary jobs?") Of course those law enforcement officers wouldn't be needed if Americans could pack heat anywhere they go, unencumbered by the unconstitutional gun "laws" with which our people are being put in jail. |

"The Bush administration has adopted a temporary rule barring certain foreign visitors, workers and students from buying guns or ammunition in the United States."

"That should help ensure that people whose visas have expired won't be able to buy a gun in this country, officials and a gun-safety group said."

"California is taking another step to combat terrorism."
"Within months, armed California Highway Patrol officers will fly on many commercial flights within the state."
"The plan is similar to the federal air marshal plan, in that armed officers will be on planes to battle would-be terrorists. But in the state plan, the officers will only work flights that they are already taking as part of their job."
"The California Highway Patrol will not be on every in-state flight," Davis said. "But when they do fly, they will fly in plainclothes, so neither the passengers, nor more importantly, would-be terrorists, will know whether or not they are on an individual flight. Traveling in plainclothes should provide an additional disincentive to terrorist activity."
KABA NOTE: The same is true of armed citizens, Mr. Davis -- the ones whom you believe to have no right to keep and bear arms. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. ALEXANDER WHITE (1787) |
