"The law says you must act like a coward. In your own home. Even when your life is threatened."

"Many states have criminal-friendly 'duty to retreat' laws. A victim in his house is mandated to retreat from an attacker until he is cornered. Only then is the prey allowed to use lethal force on the predator. Prosecutors in those states have been known to victimize the victim (such as charging him with manslaughter) who prefers to fire back rather than to back off."

"The National Rifle Association has been trying to end the insanity state by state."

"Much like most members of the establishment media dont know anyone that voted for President Bush they also dont know anyone that admits to owning a gun. For many the only exposure they have to guns, and gun owners, is when they are covering a murder or working to sensationalize the rare case when a child is accidentally killed by gunfire."

"The establishment media has therefore tried to downplay the role of the pro-gun movement by attempting to create the impression that gun owners are camouflage wearing militia members on the fringe of society. Their attempt has failed because soccer moms, real estate agents, lawyers, and teachers own guns. Even the sweet little old lady standing behind you in line at the grocery store is often carrying a gun as well."

"Every once in a while, it pays to sit back and take a look at what the anti-gun people are trying to do. So being a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and gun rights, I did just that. Here are a few observations I would like to share." ...

"I noticed that they have pulled back some and moved into small pockets where they still have a chance. ...For example look at California and the cities in that state. San Francisco, for one, has attempted to pass laws banning handguns. New York City has reacted in the same manner. Both cities have stepped up measures to make their unconstitutional laws have more strength and go after those who have, or bring into the city, handguns."

"For decades, it has been a template of the major media that Republicans are the party of racism. It repeats uncritically any charges of Republican racism, no matter how unfounded. Democrats, on the other hand, are always given a pass whenever they commit racist offenses. Even a cursory review, however, will show that the media template is totally contrary to history." ...

"After the war, the Democratic Party held a lock on the South for more than 100 years. ...Democrats enacted the first gun-control laws in order to prevent blacks from defending themselves against Ku Klux Klan violence. Chain gangs were developed by Democrats to bring back de facto slave labor.

"Critics of the change say officers have to be made accountable for their actions."

"The same law enforcement officers that disarmed the citizenry then failed to adequately protect them. Never before had the American public been faced with such a clear cut example of how disarming the law-abiding leaves the criminal element free to attack without fear."

"While many believe confiscating guns makes law enforcement and citizens safer during times of strife Katrina showed us exactly the opposite is true. The results echoed what pro-gun advocates have said always happens when law-abiding citizens are denied the most effective means of self-defense." ...

"Now, as law makers continue to reflect on the mistakes made during the Katrina disaster, new laws that make it a crime for law enforcement to confiscate guns during a state of emergency are being debated across the nation."

"Ohio HB 508, introduced by Representative Ron Hood, is designed to criminalize the confiscation of legally owned firearms by law enforcement during a state of emergency. ..."

"First off, we the people should have the right to defend ourselves without government officials telling us that law-abiding people aren't capable or allowed to do so."

"Gov. Doyle and ...Rep. Terry Van Akkeren of Sheboygan, by not supporting concealed carry are actually protecting the criminals not the people that got them in office to begin with."

"It's a shame when honest people aren't allowed to protect themselves, but yet Gov. Doyle has armed bodyguards. Little hypocritical don't you think?" ...

"Second, Van Akkeren is no better than John Kerry with his flip-flopping. Van Akkeren supported concealed carry every time it came up, but apparently with pressure from the governor, reversed his decision."

It's nice to know that our two senators are so worried about our invasion of privacy.

In New York, the state is allowed to photograph you, fingerprint you and then ask for four character references within the county you reside. Then you have to pay for this invasion. Then it goes to the Sheriff's Department to see if you are entitled to a pistol permit. If accepted, you then pay another fee.

Thank goodness for Sen. Hillary Clinton's own words: "Our civil rights should not be infringed." That is exactly what the Second Amendment says. The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

"What do we make of the Assembly sustaining Gov. Jim Doyle's veto of the concealed carry law, thus again keeping Wisconsin as one of but four states that ban the legal carrying of concealed, deadly weapons?"

"On the surface, it's good news. The vote will mean that for the foreseeable future, law enforcement in Wisconsin remains the business of police officers and deputies -- people we hire, train and arm."

"Citizens can still stay engaged, fighting street crime, domestic violence, poverty and injustice when unarmed though they will still be allowed legally to carry and shoot firearms at clay pigeons, paper targets or wild animals in season."

Police in East St. Louis say an 87-year-old woman shot and killed an intruder early this morning, then went back to bed, not realizing she had hit him.

Officers say the shooting occurred about 2 a.m. as the man was coming through a side window, where he had removed the burglar bars.

Later in the morning, the elderly woman's daughter arrived to feed her breakfast and found the man's body lying inside a screened-in porch.

Police did not release the woman's name.

One family member said someone tried to break into the woman's home in December, so her family gave her a gun to protect herself.

"I hated every bit of them and I always felt that, if guns weren't in this world, he wouldn't have been able to shoot my mom..."

"Many Missourians feel the same way and fought for years to stop a concealed carry weapon (CCW) law. The fight included one statewide vote against legally concealed weapons, vetoes and veto threats by Gov. Mel Carnahan and Gov. Bob Holden, and a legislative override of one of Holdens vetoes."

"The biggest concern was whether it would cause an increase in gun crimes. Critics feared more criminals would get handguns. Greene County Sheriff Jack Merritt recalls when his own trained deputies worried their jobs would become more deadly." ...

"When it came down to it, however, the realistic and final argument was: people who will go through the trouble of taking safety courses and weapons qualification courses are not the criminal element."

"We would like to thank state Rep. Terry Van Akkeren for voting to sustain the governor's veto of the conceal carry bill."

"With most firearm accidents occurring when children and teens discover firearms at home, eliminating the state's ban would have had serious consequences for child safety."

"Because firearms pose such a significant risk to children, the American Academy of Pediatrics has concluded the most effective way to prevent firearm-related deaths and injuries to children and adolescents is to remove guns from their homes and communities. It makes no sense to bring more guns into the home for protection if those same guns put family members or visitors at greater risk."

I have not one doubt, even if I am in agreement with the National Rifle Association, that that kind of record keeping procedure [gun registration] is the first step to eventual confiscation under one administration or another. CHARLES MORGAN, DIRECTOR, WASHINGTON DC ACLU
