"A letter to the office of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg from the U.S. Department of Justice scolding the mayors infamous 2006 gun sting operation and advising that Bloomberg's administration could face 'potential legal liabilities' over such stings was called a 'significant victory' against the Big Apple mayor's anti-gun antics by the Second Amendment Foundation." ...

"'This new development,' said SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb, 'adds insult to injury for Bloomberg. We were adamant early on that this vigilante attack on gun dealers by Bloomberg and his posse of private investigators went way beyond his legal authority. Now it appears the Justice Department believes likewise.'" ...

Statement from NRA Chief Lobbyist Chris W. Cox on ATF Rebuking Mayor Bloomberg's "Sting Operations"

FULL TEXT BELOW:

"NRA has always maintained that Mayor Bloomberg overstepped his boundaries and possibly broke the law in conducting these sting operations, and we expressed our concerns to ATF immediately. NRA is grateful that ATF has reviewed the matter and concluded that no further action is warranted against these firearms retailers.

The NRA hopes that Mayor Bloomberg heeds the ATF's stern warning that he and his administration could face potential legal liabilities if they continue their disregard of current federal law and the safety of ATF and other law enforcement officers.

If Mayor Bloomberg was serious about reducing crime, he would focus on prosecutions for violent criminals in his city, instead of resorting to media stunts and press conferences."

The federal government will not file criminal charges against any of the 15 out-of-state gun dealers accused by Mayor Bloomberg in a federal lawsuit of selling guns illegally, the Daily News has learned. In a stern rebuke to the city's high-profile crusade against illegal guns, the feds warned the Bloomberg administration that it could face "potential legal liabilities" if it continues to conduct sting operations that fall within the jurisdiction of federal agents.

"When a 'takedown' rifle is mentioned, the term usually conjures up images from TV or the movies where a rooftop sniper opens a large briefcase and assembles a sinister-looking weapon. When I mention 'lever-action rifle' your mind probably goes again to images of John Wayne, Chuck Connors or Jimmy Stewart riding the dusty range with a trusty Winchester. If I were to say, 'Browning lever-action takedown rifle,' you'd respond, 'Huh?' So did I until I shot one last month." ...

"For the first time, the U.S. government is asking foreign countries to allow pilots to carry guns in the cockpit when they fly overseas."

"The Homeland Security Department, working with the State Department, is trying to expand a 4-year-old program that allows thousands of pilots to carry guns on domestic flights."

"'It's obvious that there's a threat internationally,' said Conan Bruce, spokesman for the Federal Air Marshals Service, which runs the armed-pilots program. 'We want to work toward having (armed pilots) be able to perform their duties on international flights.'"

"Some countries may block U.S. efforts because they don't want guns on airplanes, even if they're carried by trained pilots who have been sworn as law officers." ...

"The report this week that the U.S. Department of Justice is rapping the knuckles of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg for conducting sting operations that fall within the jurisdiction of federal agents comes as welcome news to tens of millions of law-abiding gun owners in the United States, as well as to Americas legitimate firearm manufacturers, distributors and dealers."

"That, however, is not the end of the story. Much remains to be done to win the war against American firearm owners and the gun industry currently being waged by Bloomberg and by Bloombergs fellow New Yorker, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, and their gun-hating, right to self-defense hating supporters." ...

Following a complaint last month, the Town of Mamakating will restrict its court officers from carrying firearms during court session. The town's insurance policy does not cover firearms, yet two of the officers have reportedly been bringing them into the courtroom.

Wurtsboro - At the Town Board meeting Tuesday, bailiff George DeSio argued that his handgun was necessary for keeping the safety of the court as well as responding to alarms at Town Hall late at night.

The board and Town Judge Marcelle Matthews recommended that he respond with a state trooper or sheriff's deputy in the future. However, DeSio noted they aren't always available.

... "Like me you will remember vividly the horror we all felt back in 1996 when 16 children and a teacher were shot dead at a school in Dunblane by a deranged man with a gun. Politicians reacted in haste to the call for 'something to be done'. A partial ban on hand guns was implemented immediately, followed by a total ban as one of the first measures taken by the new Labour Government in 1997."

"As I am sure your officials will tell you, there was absolutely no evidence to suggest that by banning legally-licensed cartridge pistols and closing legally-operating shooting clubs, we would all sleep safer in our beds. Yet today there are more hand guns on our streets than 10 years ago." ...
