Tulsa Mayor Susan Savage has approved a plan that would allow 806 full-time police officers to buy their soon-to-be-retired handguns. The officers could buy one of the .40-caliber handguns for $175. Police are retiring the 10-year-old weapons and switching to .40-caliber Glocks.
The city hasn't determined what it will do with any guns left over after the sale. The Department has a longstanding policy of destroying confiscated weapons.

The Virginia House of Delegates today overwhelmingly passed a bill that would invalidate Alexandria's ban on firearms in city buildings and bar other localities from adopting similar policies.
The legislation is a broad measure to bar local governments from adopting laws or rules regulating gun use that have not been expressly authorized by state law. But its intent, supporters and opponents agree, is to overturn Alexandria's seven-year-old policy of barring guns from city buildings.

The first shot rang out in Florida 15 years ago, and the advocates of guns for personal defense never let up.
From state to state the movement spread, a campaign to overturn laws against carrying concealed weapons and to give residents an opportunity to pack guns hidden in holsters or purses. The latest to go concealed: New Mexico.
A few years ago, Missouri and Kansas stood in the middle of the fight. Then, for a while, they fell to the side. |

A woman who lives next to a Lenexa shooting range told state lawmakers Tuesday she and her neighbors worry that the facility could become a nuisance and should be under city regulation.
Lenexa lost much of its authority over the private shooting range last year following passage by the Kansas Legislature of a bill exempting all gun ranges from city land-use laws. |

Wisconsin residents who qualify for a permit would be allowed to carry a concealed weapon under legislation the Assembly approved early Wednesday after a weary and sometimes bitterly personal debate.
After more than four hours of debate, lawmakers voted 58-40 to approve the bill that would end the state's 130-year-old ban on concealed weapons. Rep. Jennifer Shilling, D-La Crosse, urged lawmakers to reject the bill. |

"A controversial law passed in Maryland in 1988 banning "Saturday night special" handguns may have helped cause a 9% drop in gun-related murders over the last decade," researchers reported on Wednesday. "That translates into an average of 40 lives saved per year between 1990 and 1998," claims Dr. Daniel Webster, who helps direct the Johns Hopkins University Center for "Gun Policy and Research" and who led the "study."
KABA NOTE: Johns Hopkins is severely biased against private gun ownership, by their own admission. Their "study" is less than meaningless. |

In her uphill Michigan battle against the nations longest-serving congressman, a liberal Democrat from Ann Arbor, Rep. Lynn Rivers, will face off against a liberal Democrat from Dearborn, Rep. But, while both members of Congress are considered liberals, such appellations can be deceptive. |

Closer cooperation between the Cincinnati Police Department and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms has led to what police hope is the first of more federal prosecutions of city suspects.
After Cincinnati's violent summer last year, the two agencies said they would work harder to see if more offenders could be prosecuted through the federal system, which can offer more prison time.

A lobbyist for the National Rifle Association was paid $12,000 in state tax money last year by House Republican leaders to prepare a report assessing how well a 1995 state gun law has worked.
Rep. Dan Frankel, a Squirrel Hill Democrat and member of the House Gun Caucus, called the situation "outrageous." It shows that the NRA "not just figuratively but literally sits in the Republican Caucus," Frankel said.
KABA NOTE: What's outrageous about that? Legislators rarely know what they are reading (if they read a bill at all), so they pay 'experts' to tell them what it means. Nobody bats an eyelash when they pay ANTI-gun 'experts'. Nobody batted an eyelash that $1.4million in tax money was paid to fund the anti-gun "Olympics." |
