From Thoughts Aloud:

To all elected officials, law enforcement officers, and military personnel:

As a Vietnam era veteran and former peace officer myself, I respect your service and understand that most of you value our Liberty as much as any citizen.

For those who do not fully comprehend, it is a condition of your employment as one of our public servants, that you were required to swear an oath to defend the Constitution of these United States of America. We, the people who employ you, take this oath seriously and regard any breach of same treasonous.

Be advised that hereafter your sovereign employers will consider any order to disarm private citizens, anywhere in the US, a brazen act of treason....

There was a shooting in a church in Illinois this weekend. One gunman pulled a .45 caliber handgun as he walked down the aisle of First Baptist Church Maryville, Ill., during a Sunday service. He shot the pastor, then pulled a knife and stabbed himself and two others.

I have to commend the heroic congregants who risked their lives defending their church, their pastor and the congregation.

Last years Supreme Court case hasnt stopped the District of Columbia from passing arbitrary gun laws clearly designed to restrict its citizens Second Amendment rights:

A D.C. woman filed suit in U.S. District Court yesterday, claiming that the city would not let her register a pistol because of its color.

Tracey A. Hanson argued that her application to register a .45-caliber semiautomatic was denied because the gun is not on the California Safe Handgun Roster, which is the standard in the city.

Washington considers reinstatement of weapons ban

A recent statement by Attorney General Eric Holder about the possible reinstatement of the assault weapons ban has many people questioning its affect on the second amendment, which guarantees the right to bear arms.

The assault weapons ban was enacted under the Clinton administration in a bipartisan move to ban certain types of firearms and accessories. The ban expired in 2004 and Holder has stated that the ban should be reinstated permanently.

Contrary to what its name suggests, the assault weapons ban does not cover fully-automatic weapons. Those have been illegal since the 1930s. What the ban does do is place restrictions on certain types of semi-automatic firearms and accessories.

Some encouraging signs appeared last week that the rush to expand the territory in which handguns can be carried in Tennessee might be slowing down.

That doesn't mean that citizens concerned about the drive to expand the range of handgun carriers should relax. Members of the General Assembly still need to hear from people on both sides of the debate. But there is hope that serious thought is being given to this movement...

That and two fatal shootings by handgun carry permit holders in Memphis in recent weeks should discredit the myth that everyone in possession of a handgun carry permit has been carefully screened, has never committed a crime and always shows good judgment and anger management skills...

Too Often, First Amendment Protections Denied to Second Amendment Speech

The First Amendment protects core political speechand, as should be obvious, that protection extends to speech regarding the Second Amendment. This means that students at public universities and private universities that promise the right to free expression on campus must be free to engage in unfettered discussion of the merits of federal, state and local gun policy in the same way that they are free to discuss, say, agricultural subsidies, diplomatic relations with Cuba, or last night's Daily Show.

But an unfortunate consequence of the tragedies at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University is that students are increasingly facing punishment or investigation for engaging in any kind of gun-related speech.

You cannot legally buy a handgun in Chicago, the nations most murderous city. You can own one, but only if youve owned it since before 1982 and you register it every year with the Chicago Police Department. Gun-control advocates and gun-rights advocates dont or cant agree on how a city with a handgun ban can lead the nation in murders. To proponents of owning guns it means the ban doesnt work.

Rep. Bobby Rush, Illinois Democrat, the sponsor of the Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009, surely has started a national brouhaha with House Bill 45 that, if passed by Congress, would make it illegal to own any firearm that requires an ammunition clip or any pistol unless it is first registered and the owner fingerprinted.

The bill would require anyone who owns such a firearm, excluding antiques, to obtain a license. All sales would have to go through licensed dealers. Applicants would have to authorize the release of any existing mental health records.

Late last month, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Obama administration would be seeking to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. As President Obama indicated during the campaign, there are just a few gun-related changes that we would like to make, and among them would be to reinstitute the ban on the sale of assault weapons, Holder said.

RNC chair Michael Steele sent an e-mail to supporters yesterday criticizing the decision and claiming that it is step one in the Obama administrations grand plan to repeal the 2nd Amendment:

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has said she plans to push legislation to reinstate a federal ban on some assault weapons that became law during the Clinton administration in 1994 but expired in 2004 under President Bush. Feinstein also has backed a plan to require gun shows to conduct background checks before selling firearms.

Barrett Kaiser, a spokesman for Baucus, said the senators sent the letter as a "pre-emptive strike" to warn the Obama administration that any effort to push new gun control will meet with resistance.

"If it even smells like gun control, rest assured that Max Baucus will be standing in the way," Kaiser said Wednesday.

The November election produced an unintended stimulus package for one industry: gun sales.

About as soon as Democrats took control of both the White House and Congress last fall, people began lining up to buy guns at local shops. Ammunition has been flying off store shelves, merchants say.

"Yes, there was a big rush," Christopher W. Drum, owner of CRS Weaponry in Port Richey, said. Sales boomed as much as 60 percent since November, although sales seem to be leveling off of late, he estimates.

"It was kind of wild for a while," Drum observed, with even grandmotherly types shopping for firearms. Costs of guns have been going up accordingly, with 21 manufacturers raising prices.

The 43-year old Miller, who has a wife and 5-year old daughter, released a statement on Monday expressing sorrow for having killed a young man, but clearly stated that he felt he had no other choice than to defend himself. Believing I would be gravely injured or even killed, I pulled my weapon and fired two shots in self defense, Miller wrote.

Christopher Miller has a permit to carry a concealed weapon in South Carolina. Investigators say its unlikely that he will face charges. But he has lost his 10-year part-time gig as a Pizza Hut delivery man. A corporate spokesman tells The State newspaper, Miller has resigned because Pizza Hut bans employees carrying weapons.

The hypocrisy of the left has always been a favorite source of humor. Recent letters to the editor criticized Congressman Paul Broun's opposition to an assault weapons ban, wondering how Broun, a physician, balanced his position with the sanctity of human life.

My question is, where is the outcry against owning vehicles that can exceed the speed limit? Why should we allow the purchase of such cars?

(G)reener alternatives are gaining visibility -- and stirring controversy -- as some hunters, scientists, environmentalists and public health officials worry about lead ammunition's threat to the environment and public health.

Hunting groups oppose limits on lead ammunition, saying there's no risk and alternatives are too expensive.

Working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the North Dakota Department of Health ran a test to find out the health effects of lead-shot game. The agency compared blood-lead levels of people who regularly eat meat shot with lead bullets with the levels of those who don't eat much wild game.

The results were inconclusive.

It's time for the American people to stop living in a state of denial and get serious about stopping gun shipments into Mexico.

Mexico's ambassador to the United States, Arturo Sarukhan, has noted that as many as 2,000 weapons enter Mexico from the U.S. every day most of them through Texas and Arizona, and many of them are purchased legally at gun shows and gun stores. Many of the transactions come in "straw purchases," where drug traffickers use Americans including friends and relatives to buy guns.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives estimates that 90 percent of the firearms confiscated in drug crimes in Mexico come from the United States, and some of the shipments can be enormous.

MO: Gun Laws Could Change

Missouri has the nation's oldest minimum age requirement for concealed weapons, but that soon could change.

Some state lawmakers want to lower the minimum age to 21, down from 23. Of 48 states that have concealed carry laws, about two-thirds have set the age limit at 21 years.

Critics worry a change may compromise the agreement lawmakers made in 2003 when they set the minimum.

Bob Cron of Target Masters, an indoor shooting range and gun shop in Columbia, says if other states are comfortable with the lower age limit, Missouri should be, too.

If the bill to change the rule does pass, Cron says it wouldn't increase business much because 21-year-olds can already purchase a gun.

Republican Sen. John Ensign has engineered a major political coup that could leave the District of Columbia with weaker gun laws than those of Las Vegas and thwart a long-sought effort to give residents of the capital voting rights in Congress.
In a victory for gun rights advocates, the Nevada lawmaker led Senate efforts to strike down a gun control law in the capital by adding an amendment to a long-fought bill to give the district a voting representative in Congress.

When the 10-year federal ban on assault weapons expired in 2004, sports shooting enthusiast Tyler Cooper bought his first AR-15, a semi-automatic civilian version of the U.S. militarys M-4 assault rifle.

The 21-year-old...has since expanded his collection to include an SKS... complete with 30-round magazine...
Gun collectors like Cooper fear that recent comments from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and the stated policies of the Obama administration threaten their ability to buy guns like the AR-15 and SKS in the future.

It wont do anything but make it harder for honest, law-abiding citizens to get the guns they want, Cooper said of a proposed renewal of the old assault weapons ban. Criminals will get them no matter what.

Regulate armed robots before it's too late

Police forces are looking to acquire miniature Taser-firing robot helicopters.

In the next decades, completely autonomous robots might be involved in many military, policing, transport and even caring roles.

(T)he real concern lies in the areas to which the money already flows: the military and the police.

The civil liberties implications of robot devices capable of surveillance involving listening and photographing, conducting searches, entering premises through chimneys or pipes, and overpowering suspects are obvious. Such devices are already on the way. Even more frighteningly obvious is the threat posed by military or police-type robots in the hands of criminals and terrorists.
