"Last month's revelation that President Bush wants hundreds of millions of dollars to invent innovative ways to spy on Americans was greeted not with suspicion, but shoulder-shrugging indifference."
"Save for a few battle-weary civil libertarians, not many people have been fretting about how cameras now monitor all downtown areas in Washington, D.C., or the unchecked spread of face-recognition cameras that spy on travelers in airports and sports fans in arenas." |

In making this case for a veto, the opponents have raised a question whose importance transcends the particular constitutional dispute at hand: namely, does the president have a duty to make judgments about constitutional disputes in the first place?" |

"On Monday March 4, Secretary Norman Mineta and Director Tom Ridge came out in opposition to arming airline pilots. Of course, they stated that these are only personal opinions. Even at that, knowing that these gentlemen have never been what you could call pro-gun, for them to go against the wishes of the Administration is telling."
"It is one thing for an administration lackey to have personal opinions that they keep to themselves, but it is another thing to publicly state them."

KABA NOTE: This is yet another anti-CCW person using the blood of relatives to oppose free access to the means of self-defense. Somehow, the tragic loss of her parents (and preventable, possibly, if they'd been armed) to someone criminally misusing guns is justification to make sure everybody else is a sitting duck, too. "Martinez and Hill, armed with sticks, struck at the white dog until it let go."
Tom Allison NOTE: Stick good. Firearm better.
KABA NOTE: Because this attack took place in California, even if the boy's rescuers had a firearm with which to more effectively neutralize the vicious animals, fear of going to jail for helping this young lad would likely have prevented them from taking such sensible measures. "If pilots were allowed to carry weapons, railroad engineers and bus drivers would soon be asking to do the same, [Director of Homeland Security Tom] Ridge argued."
"Well, come to think of it, they probably would. But Ridge failed to explain why that would be bad."
"The fact is, we should be arming not only the engineers and bus drivers, but the passengers as well. Guns in the hands of honest citizens are formidable deterrents against would-be hijackers."

"The never-ending battle over property rights (what can you do with what you own, and who can take it away from you?) often gets short-shrift in mainstream conversations about civil liberties.
