The Illinois State Rifle Association is condemning a recent federal court action as a serious threat to the privacy of law-abiding gun owners. On March 8, 2001, U.S. District Court Judge George Lindberg ordered the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) to release federal gun purchase records to lawyers for the city of City of Chicago. Making the judge's decision even more troubling is the fact that gun purchase records from all 50 states will now be handed over to Chicago's attorneys. |

"We don't look at it as a polarizing effect on the community -- whether it's pro-gun, anti-gun," said Bill Piercy, Carroll County Asst. Supervisor of Staff Devel. & Health Ed, "We look at it as a health and safety issue and that's how we treat it in our classes." ~~~~~ Are they aware that the Meeks-Heit Totally Awesome Health Book series already teaches "gun safety" as a "health" issue - that anyone who carries a gun should be avoided at all costs? I wonder what the MD curriculum teaches. |

From the Christian Science Monitor... "to blame school shootings on the easy accessibility of guns is to ignore a whole range of societal factors that led the perpetrators to act out in the first place, say others. And in many cases, the shooters might have found a way to obtain a weapon, regardless of whether their parents had one in the home." |

"A Shenandoah Valley health-care company is working to determine the feasibility of equipping cars with data-gathering "black boxes" like those on airplanes. The black boxes would automatically call 911 on a wireless communication system in the event of a car wreck. The system would be able to tell where the car is, if the vehicle flipped, and it would be able to store data on how many passengers were in the vehicle, giving dispatchers an idea about how many rescue vehicles to send." |

"I think we should simply change the Constitution. It was written at a time when you couldn't call the police for protection. Now we can just make a phone call, and help is on the way. If we had no guns, then there would be no need to defend ourselves against criminals, since the criminals wouldn't have guns, either." -Sydney Morgan ~~~~~ Do they even teach children how to reason in schools any more, or is this too threatening to their self esteem? |

"After Columbine, the desire for fewer guns and stricter gun laws became the zeitgeist. Gun control in the nation which regarded the right to bear arms as the ultimate expression of freedom was an idea whose time had finally arrived. Less than a year ago, a crowd of 600,000 crammed into the Washington mall to demand congressional action to limit firearms. Last week, about gun control, there was hardly a sound. Largely, this is a consequence of a Bush White House." -ROBERT TAIT |

"The Detroit News and Novi MMM visited the gun shows at Gibraltar Trade Center, which only allows licensed dealers to sell firearms. However, in the Detroit News article, the MMM claim that rifles can be bought at the show with only a permit or a background check. While the only permit Michigan requires is for handguns, ALL rifle sales from FFLs require NICS, even at gun shows." -Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners (MCGRO) |
