An Idaho gun shop that went to federal court to keep the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from pulling its gun license has reached a settlement with the agency.
Terry and Ryan Horsley of Red's Trading Post in Twin Falls asked the court to review their case in 2007, after the ATF revoked their license. The ATF said the shop had repeatedly violated gun sales rules. The Horsleys said they had been targeted by the agency and that most of the problems were clerical, such as using abbreviations on gun sale documentation. Red's Trading Shop attorney Christopher Chiafullo wouldn't discuss the terms of the settlement |

In an after action report on behalf of the US Gov't: Mexican law enforcement authorities and soldiers face heavily armed drug gangs with high-powered military automatic weapons. Perhaps 90% of these weapons are smuggled across the US border. They are frequently purchased from licensed US gun dealers in Texas, Arizona, and 7 California. AK-47 assault rifles are literally bought a hundred at a time and illegally brought into Mexico. Mexican authorities routinely seize BOXES of unopened automatic military weapons. The confiscation rates by Mexican law enforcement of hand grenades, RPGs, and AK-47s are at the level of wartime battlefield seizures.
Submitter's note: Whoa!!! Which gun dealers in Texas, Arizona, and California are doing this? |

BRETT LEE hadnt shot a gun or been cross-country skiing since he was a teenager. But when Mr. Lee, an avid cyclist and triathlete, moved to Milwaukee last year he decided to go in a new direction biathlon. It sounded kind of cool, said Mr. Lee, 44, who prefers to exercise outdoors. It was either hide inside and look at the snow or find something to get me outside. Mr. Lee is one of a small but growing number of amateurs in the United States who are taking an interest in biathlon, a sport that combines cross-country skiing and target shooting. Competitors ski around a track with a rifle on their back, stop, shoot at targets, and then repeat the whole process. |

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the ammo supply being virtually non existent for certain calibers? I have been stopping by the local China-Mart, hoping to find the Winchester white box 9mm in the 100 round "economy pack" for the last three months and the shelf has been empty. I asked the clerk, and he said it had been on back order for several months and he had no idea when it would be back on the shelf. |

The 1st Amendment protects core political speech and that protection extends to speech regarding the 2nd Amendment... But an unfortunate consequence of the tragedies at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University is that students are increasingly facing punishment or investigation for engaging in any kind of gun-related speech... a student gave a presentation for his speech class about the safety value of concealed weapons on campus; his professor called the police... At Tarrant County College in Texas, a student chapter of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus was prohibited from wearing empty gun holsters to protest policies... Arkansas Tech cancelled a student production of Stephen Sondheim's Assassins... |

Just hours before gun-rights advocates marched to the state capitol, a proposal to permit concealed weapons in the state died in committee. Senate Bill 1976, which would have allowed Illinois county sheriffs to issue concealed carry permits to gun owners who passed background checks and training classes, failed to clear the Senate Public Health Committee. A similar bill is still making its way through the house, although it's unlikely to become law this year.
While bus loads of downstaters rallied for the concealed carry law, legislators were busy passing more stringent regulations on gun ownership. The House Executive Committee approved legislation banning assault weapons and restricting gun purchases to one a month on Wednesday. |

Westchester County is getting some high-tech help to keep guns off the street. It's a sensor used to detect a gunshot as soon as it's fired, but critics insist the old-fashioned way with cops on the beat is what the county really needs. Police officers recently seized a cache of guns from alleged drug dealers on the streets of Mount Vernon, but know that there are many more illegal firearms out there. "There is a sense of urgency, and a sense of emergency, in this whole process," Westchester County Executive Andy Spano says. |

Faced with a choice between gun rights and property rights, an Arizona House panel has sided with the former.
On a 6-2 vote, the Judiciary Committee approved legislation to allow people to drive into privately owned parking lots with loaded weapons in their vehicles. The wishes of the business owner would become legally irrelevant.
With bipartisan support, the bill now goes to the full House. |

So much of the reaction to another shooting is understandable. People can become frightened, disoriented, anxious to do something, but what? Remember that shootings are not the action of a rational purpose, Reactions can be irrational, too. After all, on rational analysis of shooters, anyone so irrational can become armed with anything if they are bent on destruction of others and eventually of self.
When it comes to reactions, one of the first is political. In politically answering violent crime, reactions reflect ones world view political outlook, of course, and solutions often accomplish nothing. Politically speaking.... |

ASUM discussed House Bill 228, which, if passed by Montana legislatures, would make the permit process to obtain a concealed weapon easier, as well as redefine self-defense.
...
(The bill) essentially is allowing more people to carry concealed weapons and is expanding its use in defensive situations, Lemcke said. Now the law says I dont have to think about running as an option to protecting myself. |

A case that drew national attention over a legal dispute between Idaho's oldest gun store and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives reached a quiet and uneventful conclusion on Wednesday.
Attorneys working on behalf of Red's Trading Post announced an agreement Wednesday that will end litigation over allegations that the gun store "willfully" sold guns improperly.
An attorney representing Red's said neither party admitted any wrongdoing in the case, which lasted nearly four years before reaching an agreement in U.S. District Court. |

Germany will face pressure to examine its gun laws in response to the school shooting near Stuttgart.
Over the past decade, more teenagers have gone on the rampage in Germany than in any other country apart from the United States.
But Germany has some of the world's strictest gun laws. Handguns are on sale only to those 18 or over, with heavier weapons restricted to over-21s. And weapons cannot be purchased legally without a licence.
None of this prevented 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer from going on his shooting spree. According to Spiegel online, the student's family kept 18 weapons at home. Germany's ZDF TV, quoting police sources, confirmed one of his father's weapons was missing. |

A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government. Edward Abbey
The anticipated assault on our Second Amendment rights by the Obama administration and its fellow travelers in Congress is coming. Its an attack not only on our inalienable right to self-defense, but also on the very foundation of freedom.
Attorney General Eric Holder recently announced the administrations intent to ban so-called assault weapons a politically charged misnomer that demonizes a class of semiautomatic rifles that thousands of Americans use for plinking, hunting and self-defense. |

Germany does not need to tighten its gun laws in response to school shootings by a teenager in southwestern Germany on Wednesday, Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said.
Some German politicians have called for a ban on private gun ownership and urged authorities to set up airport-style security systems at schools in response to the massacre, which left 16 people dead, including the killer.
"I can't see how a change in weapons rules would contribute anything to solving the problem," Schaeuble, an ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, told Reuters...
It used to be sex. Now violence seems to be the new temptation," he said.
Schaeuble described the shootings as a "horrible event." |

If someone tried to sue Ford because a drunk driver got into an accident, the case would go nowhere. If someone tried to sue Cooper Hand Tools because a nutjob took a hatchet to a rival, no lawyer would touch the case. If someone sued Krylon because a vandal ruined the paint job on their car, the judge would immediately toss the case.
Trying to hold a manufacture responsible for the criminal misuse of their product is unacceptable to most people. So why is it so different when a criminal misuses a firearm to commit a crime?

In my first post on the Samson, AL homicides, I suggested the likely excuse offered for the deployment of Regular Army troops in that town:
*** I'm going with "Responding to a request from local law enforcement, elements of a military police unit stationed at Fort Rucker were temporarily deployed to provide local security and to reassure residents." ***
Courtesy of a reader, here's a transcript of Alex Jones' interview with Lt. Col. Scott Wile, Provost Marshall at Fort Rucker.

The government's terrorist watch list has hit 1 million entries, up 32% since 2007.
In the past two years, 51,000 people have filed "redress" requests claiming they were wrongly included on the watch list, according to the Department of Homeland Security. In the vast majority of cases reviewed so far, it has turned out that the petitioners were not actually on the list, with most having been misidentified at airports because their names resembled others on it.
Submitter's note: If you are detained, even though you are not on the list, then you might as well be on the list. How did we get along so well for 225 years without a Department of Homeland Security?

IN a game of word association, "SoHo" and "guns" don't exactly go together, but it turns out that the Manhattan neighborhood boasts one of the largest arsenals on the East Coast. Most of the assault rifles, Uzis and pistols stored in the company's vault are in fact bona-fide killing machines - only modified to shoot blanks instead of bullets. "And the actors love firing blanks. They'd be using real bullets if we let them. They're always trying to invent reasons to whip out the weapon and shoot someone." |

Lawmakers supporting this bill are in a fantasyland. They actually believe people are going to carry their guns into dining establishments, believing they're protecting themselves from danger, and then if someone attacks them (like that happens all the time), they will have their weapons handy to defend themselves. The flaws in that sort of thinking are too numerous to count.
Legislators who favor this bill believe gun carriers will all be as skilled and brilliant as Wyatt Earp. All it takes is one flare-up, and you've got a fight worthy of Billy the Kid. The only decision-making dumber than passing this legislation would be to eat at one of those restaurants. |
