Stanford Researchers Spot Medical Conditions, Guns, and More In Phone Metadata

Since the NSA's phone metadata program broke last summer, politicians have trivialized the privacy implications. It's 'just metadata,' Dianne Feinstein and others have repeatedly emphasized. That view is no longer tenable: Stanford researchers crowdsourced phone metadata from real users, and easily identified calls to 'Alcoholics Anonymous, gun stores, NARAL Pro-Choice, labor unions, divorce lawyers, sexually transmitted disease clinics, a Canadian import pharmacy, strip clubs, and much more.' Looking at patterns in call metadata, they correctly diagnosed a cardiac condition and outed an assault rifle owner.

The gun lobby had plenty of reason to celebrate Thursday in Lansing, where Michigan's Republican-led House approved a series of bills designed to make gun ownership records confidential, lift a ban on short-barreled shotguns and clarify what it means to "brandish" a weapon.

"This protects the privacy of those individuals who practice their 2nd Amendment rights, said sponsoring state Rep. Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton). "These are law abiding citizens that went through the legal means, that went through the process and I believe what we're putting into statute is good policy."

There have been reports that Navy veteran John Cinque has been receiving threats because of his stance on the issue of Connecticut's gun registration law. Apparently those reports are due to a misreading of a piece by the New Haven Register in which Cinque said, "There have been threats made that I found out about today." Freedom Outpost reached out to John Cinque, who spoke with us this morning and confirmed that the threats he was speaking about were towards the Branford Police, not towards him.

Clearly this sentence in stand-your-ground should be changed back to what a reasonable person would do in the situation rather than requiring law enforcement to attempt a Vulcan mind-probe to decipher the actorsor perpetratorsstate of mind. More importantly, the publics valid concern over the vigilante-style actions of certain people who have watched too many Western movies should be dealt with through legislative action.

The debate over whether New Jersey should ban ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds appears to come down to whether one believes that the smaller clips will deter mass shooters or hinder citizens using guns in self-defense.

Supporters of the ban, including groups like Heeding Gods Call and Ceasefire NJ, say that it would force shooters to pause and reload, creating opportunities for potential victims to escape or for law-enforcement or others to apprehend a gunman.

CA: Calif. police see surge in concealed carry requests

Californians have flooded several sheriff offices with applications and inquiries for permits to carry concealed guns.

Sheriffs in some politically conservative or rural counties reported spikes in applications while other counties in the state experienced smaller increases.

Demand is being driven by a federal appeals court ruling last month that made it easier for residents to obtain the hard-to-get permits. About 56,000 Californians have a concealed-weapons permit in a state of 38 million residents.

The 9th U.S. District Court of Appeals ruled Feb. 13 that law-abiding residents need only to show a desire for self-defense rather than proving they were confronted with a "clear and present danger."

The Yolo County Sheriff's Department has seen a recent surge of applications to carry concealed weapons, even though the county's policy remains the same.
The 9th U.S. Court of Appeals ruled last week against the county's policy of requiring people to prove they face a threat or violence or robbery before they can get a concealed weapon permit.

But according to Yolo County Sheriff Ed Prieto Thursday, "the 9th District ... decision is not yet final, nor is the (San Diego County) decision on which it is based."

Prieto said Yolo County has not changed its concealed weapon license policy and is in the process of appealing the court's decision.

The shirt that got the sophomore in trouble had the NRA log as well as the words '2nd Amendment Shall not be Infringed,' written across the back.

With only two working days left in Georgias 2014 legislative session, Rep. Mandi Ballinger (R-Canton) says the House is likely done compromising with the Senate on a bill that seeks to give churches, bars and under certain circumstances schools the option to allow guns.

House Bill 875, with Ballinger as the fourth signer on the bill, is once again hitting road blocks in the Senate after easily passing the House. The story was similar in 2013 when the bill, known as the Safe Carry Protection Act, passed the House and died in the Senate.

Students, staff and visitors will soon be cleared to bring concealed guns onto Idahos college and University campuses.

"The Governor is aware of all the court cases throughout the years that have come down to say there are places you can restrict the 2nd Amendment. He's aware like I am, it's not so much the 2nd Amendment it's about the policy. It's not to restrict college campuses, said Rep. Maxine Bell.

The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2014

Just Ask.

Thats the statement about a question now being posed on dozens of Metro buses.

Washington Ceasefire spent over $10,000 on a series of billboards, which will run inside and outside the buses, until April 7.

Its about asking parents about their neighbors where there kids play. Is there a gun in the house? said Ralph Fascitelli, Washington Ceasefire Board member. We see this as a public safety and public health issue.

Since he hasnt been charged in the case, FOX6 News is not naming the maintenance worker, but police say he was changing the locks at the apartment building near 27th and Vliet when he and the teens began to argue.

Investigators say the teens, along with a 20-year-old man, held the maintenance worker down and beat him with a baseball bat.

Apparently, these people were mad that a friend of theirs was getting evicted. They thought apparently that he was the manager, Braun said.

Thats when police say the maintenance man pulled out a gun and shot the 19-year-old and 17-year-old.

Braun believes the shooting was in self-defense.

Heres an update on what Craig said about California: Court decisions there and in Illinois have now recognized the right to carry a firearm for personal protection outside the home.

In California, where openly carrying a firearm is generally prohibited, a panel of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in Peruta v. San Diego that self-defense was a justifiable reason for wanting to carry a gun.

Unlike officials in some other parts of the state, the sheriff in San Diego routinely denied concealed carry weapon permits because he disagreed with that view.

Idaho Gov. C.L. Butch Otter on Wednesday signed into law a bill, SB 1254, that would allow certain individuals to carry concealed handguns onto public college and university property, including inside classrooms.

As elected officials, we have a sworn responsibility to protect and defend the Constitution of the United Statesnot only when doing so is easy, convenient or without cost, but especially when it is not, Otter wrote in a statement upon signing the bill. This legislation challenges us to fulfill that charge, and we will.

Saying guns are special, the state House voted Thursday to make taking one from someone a crime.

Never mind it already is.

Approved on a 41-15 margin, HB 2338 spells out that someone commits the crime of aggravated assault by taking a firearm that someone else legally possesses. That's a Class 4 felony and carries a presumptive prison term of 2 1/2 years.

House Minority Leader Chad Campbell questioned the need for special legislation.

Former L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca was notoriously stingy when it came to issuing concealed weapons permits. In a county of 10 million people, only about 340 people have one. (Many of them happen to be Baca's friends.)

But that policy may change, depending on who is elected the next sheriff. At a debate last night in Van Nuys, the candidates took different positions on the issue.

Paul Tanaka, the former undersheriff, said he would open up the process...

"I support the Second Amendment," Tanaka said. "Being able to possess a weapon, by way of a CCW, is a right, not a privilege."

A bill that seeks to pre-empt a hypothetical gun-seizing order from the federal government cleared its last hurdle when it won unanimous backing in the House Wednesday.

Rep. Jason Monks, a Meridian Republican, says the measure will protect Second Amendment rights by punishing Idaho law enforcement officers who seize citizens' firearms.

It's aimed at counteracting the chance President Barack Obama will try to restrict gun ownership, something Monks says is at odds with Idaho law.

Idaho officials who order confiscation of firearms could face fines or misdemeanor charges under the measure.

A controversial bill allowing guns in parked cars on school property is being revised to address some concerns of gun opponents.

But the final proposal was still being considered by lawmakers seeking a compromise late Wednesday. Even as revised, it's far from acceptable to gun opponents.

The primary change made by lawmakers negotiating Senate Bill 229 is intended to clarify language that opponents thought would have allowed people to carry guns while on school parking lots or in school buildings.

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence is suing on behalf of Janet Delana from Wellington, Mo., who is the mother of a mentally ill woman who used a gun to murder her father.

According to the complaint, Delana called Odessa Gun and Pawn in Odessa, Mo., in June 2012 to ask that the shop not sell her mentally ill daughter, Colby Sue Weathers, another gun. But two days later, Weathers allegedly bought a semi-automatic .45 caliber handgun from the shop, and used it to murder her father. John Lowy, Director of the Legal Action Project at the Brady Center, says his group has filed similar lawsuits in other states.

Missouris measure protecting the right of citizens to keep and bear arms is now scheduled to go to the floor of the state House of Representatives, where it must be passed by the entire body before sending it along to the state governor for his signature.

If the legislature successfully passes this important bill, perhaps they will have the strength of their commitment to overcome a veto that will almost certainly follow. Last year, the legislature fell one vote short of overriding Democratic Governor Jay Nixon's veto of a similar Second Amendment-protecting bill.

A bill clarifying that simply carrying a firearm in a holster or enclosed case does not constitute disorderly conduct is on its way to Gov. Gary Herbert for his signature.

The House voted 63-8 Thursday to approve Senate amendments to HB276 and provide final passage.

Rep. Curt Oda, R-Clearfield, the bills sponsor, said in earlier debate that sometimes people preparing to go hunting or carrying a holstered gun but making no threatening gestures or comments have been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct because someone else felt uncomfortable. He said that infringes on Second Amendment rights.
