Standing in the master bathroom of his Bend, Oregon, home, Brennan Pebbles is describing the night a home intruder shot a rifle through his front window, killed his roommate, and then hunted him through his house.

After the first shot came through his living room window, Pebbles ran upstairs, grabbed his 9 mm handgun and hid in the bathroom.

He remembers hearing the broken glass crunching as the shooter made his way up the stairs looking for him.

The firearms industry suffered a major setback Thursday when a Connecticut court ruled families who lost children in the Sandy Hook massacre can sue the gun maker a breakthrough one dad said hes been waiting for.

My son was killed in a shooting in a school so I cant use words like excited or happy because Im here for a terrible tragedy. Im just glad the case is moving forward, Ian Hockley told the Herald.

Hockley, father of 6-year-old Dylan Hockley who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, said the courts judgement has allowed families to continue fighting.

UT: This bill could make Utah more dangerous

This past week, the stand your ground expansion bill was passed in the Utah State Legislature. As a member of our community and a mother of a young son, I am extremely disappointed and concerned about this bill.

Stand your ground laws allow people to shoot first and ask questions later in a situation they find dangerous, even if there is a way to safely retreat. Stand your ground laws are dangerous, they encourage armed vigilantism and are associated with clear increases in homicides.

However, NRA members should respectfully ask that the committee NOT advance S.22 by Sen. Phil Baruth, the architect of last years S.55. This bill would create a 48-hour waiting period for all firearms sales and require that when a firearm is not in a persons immediate possession or control, the firearm must be locked in a safe storage depository or rendered incapable of being fired. This legislation would kill gun shows and decimate local businesses. This legislation would have virtually no impact on public safety or suicide prevention.

Some Alabama lawmakers want churchgoers to be able to defend themselves in church -- so they are proposing a bill that would allow them to be armed while sitting on the pews.

State Rep. Lynn Greer filed a bill this month in the State Legislature called the "Alabama Church Protection Act," which would allow parishioners to carry guns in church.

Al.com reported the Republican state lawmaker said he proposed the bill, HB 36, at the request of a church in his district after shootings in other states.

Democrat Jason W. B. Pizzo introduced SB 1310 into the Florida Senate. The bill would make it illegal for anyone under 18 to post a picture on the internet of a firearm, BB gun, airsoft gun, or any other device that resembles a gun. This law would also apply to realistic toy guns.

The Miami-Dade Democrat's law would charge the minor with a misdemeanor. The fines can be up to $1000 per violation. In addition to the fine, authorities could also jail the minor for up to one year if convicted of violating the proposed anti-free-speech law.

The law would also require the parents of the minor to attend parenting classes for reprograming.

In last weeks post I discussed Phase 2 of progressive pistol training. This week lets move up the scale to Phase 3 Situational Pistol Training. Understand, this is basically a reasonable formula for teaching progressive skills to students who are serious about dedicated pistol training. It may not be everyones approach, but it has worked well for me over the years with hundreds of students. As always, if you can avoid or escape a confrontation altogether you should.

I want to see your grip and your stance once you get the firearm, says Jay Hawkins at Reno Guns and Range. So go ahead and pick it up."

The Training and Compliance Manager spends ample time with students on the range helping them become more familiar and comfortable with their firearm. "Spending some time developing intuitive unsighted fire." This is just a small portion of the Home Defense Tactics on-site course.

Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill into law Thursday to use $150,000 in taxpayers dollars to reimburse owners of bump stocks if they turn them into law enforcement.

Bump stocks are devices that enable semiautomatic rifles to fire at a rate approaching fully automatic. They were used by a gunman who opened fire in 2017 on a large crowd at an open-air country music in Las Vegas, killing 58 and injuring over 500 others in the deadliest such shooting in modern American history.

Phil Morrical III, 62, and his son Kyle Morrical of Morrical Realty were managing a rental property in Hamilton, Ohio, that had stood vacant for several months. After learning of a break-in, they went in and found various drug paraphernelia, knives and abandoned propane tanks inside the house. They came back to clean up and secure the property but, upon opening the garage door, found a man, whom the police later identified as Derek Miller, inside.

The arrest of a Missouri Senate aide who dropped his loaded gun during a Jefferson City bar fight didn't end in tragedy, this time. But it did come with a big dose of irony. The intoxicated aide admitted to police that if he'd managed to hold onto the gun, "I woulda used it."

Yet his boss and other legislators are debating a proposal to let people carry concealed guns in a wide range of places where they're currently prohibited including bars. This incident should serve as Exhibit A against that awful idea.

Its billed by proponents as a way moms can defend themselves from attackers while dropping their children off at school.

But legislation that cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday on a 4-3 party-line vote also would permit high schoolers who are 18 years old to bring and keep loaded guns in their vehicles. And that alarmed some foes of HB 2693 who said it creates the opportunity for what starts out as a spat among students to quickly escalate if one goes out to the parking lot to retrieve the weapon.

Many point to statistics collected by the Department of Justice in 2011 saying that 18 to 24-year-olds commit more gun crimes than older groups. True, but they also have the highest victimization rate. I believe this can largely be attributed to gang violence because homicides involving guns are disproportionately committed by gang members who typically fall into this age range. So, perhaps a better way to curb overall gun crime would be to keep guns out of the hands of gang members? This statement in and of itself deserves its own article to further justify, but lets go with this premise for now.
