Michigan Open Carry's vice president says Ann Arbor Public Schools' plan to ban guns from campus is "lawless."
"It is clear that AAPS knows what state law is, but doesn't care," said Tom Lambert in response to March 18 statement from Ann Arbor school officials.
"They don't care because their taxpayer funded insurance will bail the district out if they are wrong, and ultimately, it is highly unlikely the public officials will ever be held individually responsible," he said.
Lawfully carrying a gun into a school does not create a disturbance on its own, Lambert said.

This year, lawmakers in 10 states are pushing bills that would permit the carrying of firearms on campus. Currently, carrying concealed firearms on campus is banned by law or school policy in 41 states, and openly carrying weapons is usually forbidden as well. In Pennsylvania, guns on campus are not forbidden by state law, though most universities in the state have chosen to ban them. Advocates of the proposed legislation argue that campus carry the ability to carry a concealed weapon on a college campus would decrease instances of sexual assault. |

After strong, bipartisan opposition from Congress and an outcry from the American public, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) backed down last week over proposed regulations that would restrict the use of popular ammunition for legal firearms.
While ATFs sudden reversal is a welcome victory for Second Amendment rights, the backdoor tactics used to limit available ammunition show why Congress and the American public must remain vigilant. |

As many Americans are aware, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosivesannounced changes last month to its framework for sporting ammunition, which included a rule that would effectively ban M855 green tip ammo used in the AR-15 rifle. Not only is that bullet one of the most common for that rifle, but its been available to law-abiding citizens on the civilian market and primarily used for sporting purposes for more than 30 years. |

On a voice vote the Senate on Tuesday voted to preemptively block current or future local laws or regulations that would require background checks before a gun could be transferred.
Federal law already requires such checks when a sale is made by a commercial dealer. But those laws do not apply to private sales which have been interpreted to also include sales made at gun shows.
HB 2527 most immediately would apply against Tucson which requires such checks when gun shows are operated at city-owned facilities. That ordinance, however, does not affect transfers made at private sites. |

Gun rights advocates are seeking support on Beacon Hill to legalize stun guns, following a ruling by the state's highest court that upholds a ban on the non-lethal weapons. Earlier this month, the Supreme Judicial Court ruled against a woman, Jaime Caetano, who was arrested with a stun gun in 2011. She told police she needed it for self-defense against an abusive ex-boyfriend.
The court ruled that Caetano could have applied for a gun permit or bought pepper spray, both of which are legal, but that stun guns are a modern invention" not protected by the Second Amendment. Legalizing stun gun ownership, the court said, is a matter for the Legislature. |

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms backed down last week from banning a popular type of ammunition, a big win for gun rights advocates. But both gun rights and gun control proponents are armed to the teeth for a lobbying battle that will continue, as the agency has promised further study of the issue and Congress is watching closely. The clash has highlighted the fact that the counterweight to the National Rifle Association has grown sizable, though it still has a fair way to go to reach parity. |

The bill SB 1330 not only protects citizens of Arizona from the president's attempts to abridge their right to keep and bear arms, but it explicitly prohibits employees and agents of the state from enforcing or supporting any of the proscribed federal attempts at disarmament.
According to the bill, any officer or agent of the state or one of its political subdivisions (counties and municipalities) who decides to bow to Big Brother and help him seize weapons will be "forever ineligible" from acting on behalf of the state or provide services to it. |

The state Senates Republican majority flexed its newfound muscles again Wednesday, giving preliminary approval to a proposal that would allow concealed handguns at public colleges despite safety and cost concerns raised by higher education leaders, faculty and students.
Thanks to a change in the upper chambers rules and support from its entire GOP contingent, the outcome was all but guaranteed even before debate on the so-called campus carry bill started. Nevertheless, the vote was unprecedented, as Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick remarked.
I am proud of the fact that the Texas Senate is making history while defending life, liberty and our Second Amendment right, Patrick said in a statement. |

For a little more than four years, Eric Puryear with Puryear Law in Davenport, Iowa, has given his employees an extra $50 a month if they get their permits and carry a gun.
"Well, I really like gun rights. I think they're a basic human right. I think so many bad things wouldn't happen to people if they were armed for self-defense," said Puryear.
In his office lobby is a sign welcoming guns. There is an NRA hat, as well as handgun and shotgun books, above his desk.

University of Texas System Chancellor William McRaven opposes the campus carry bill because he thinks if it becomes law it would create a less safe environment for the students, faculty and staff.
There is great concern that the presence of handguns, even if limited to licensed individuals age 21 or older, will lead to an increase in both accidental shootings and self-inflicted wounds," McRaven wrote in a Jan. 29 letter to Texas legislative leaders.
McRaven also expressed concerns about allowing guns in university hospitals and laboratories because they are places where emotions can run high.

Much-sought legislation making open carry of sidearms once more legal in Texas it has been prohibited since the post-Civil War era passed that state's Senate yesterday and there is considerable discussion lately about the pros and cons that have become part of the overall right to keep and bear arms debate.
Northwest Second Amendment activists have been weighing into a lively discussion at the Northwest Firearms forum, thanks to a couple of columns at Backwoods Home Magazine by nationally-recognized self-defense expert Massad Ayoob. His new book, Deadly Force: Understanding Your Right to Self-Defense, is doing well and should be required reading for any armed citizen. |

You've got to give them creditgun owners don't mind standing up to government trying to infringe on their Second Amendment rights. When the ATF tried to ban certain types of ammo the gun owners of this nation spoke out. The Free Beacon reports: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) received more than 310,000 comments from the public on the agency's failed attempt to ban a popular form of ammunition used in AR-15 rifles.
"We've received more than 310,000 public comments," said Ginger Colbrun, a spokesperson for the ATF. "We're still receiving some letters which are postmarked prior to the end of the comment period, March 16th." |

The Daily Signal has exclusively learned that Sen. Mike Crapo will offer an amendment Thursday to the Senates budget proposal that would defund the Justice Departments controversial program known as Operation Choke Point.
The Department of Justice must not politicize its enforcement policies, and we must not let Operation Choke Point become an end run around the Second Amendment by threatening the financial security of gun and ammunition manufacturers, said Crapo, R-Idaho, in a statement to The Daily Signal. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
I do believe that where there is a choice only between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence. Thus when my eldest son asked me what he should have done had he been present when I was almost fatally assaulted in 1908 [by an Indian extremist opposed to Gandhi's agreement with Smuts], whether he should have run away and seen me killed or whether he should have used his physical force which he could and wanted to use, and defend me, I told him it was his duty to defend me even by using violence. Hence it was that I took part in the Boer War, the so-called Zulu Rebellion and [World War I]. Hence also do I advocate training in arms for those who believe in the method of violence. I would rather have India resort to arms in order to defend her honor than that she should in a cowardly manner become or remain a helpless witness to her own dishonor. Mohandas K. Gandhi, Young India, August 11, 1920 from Fischer, Louis ed.,The Essential Gandhi, 1962 |
