VPC invents bizarre new justification to ban 'assault weapons'

"The rabidly anti-gun Violence Policy Center (VPC), which sometimes criticizes the Brady Campaign for not being anti-gun enough, has released another of it's 'studies.' This one covers familiar territory for the VPC, being one of many of its calls for a federal ban of so-called 'assault weapons'--defined vastly more expansively than the 1994 ban." ...

"So now to the current 'study' ... The intent, evidently, is to illustrate a growing rate of 'assault weapon' violence' since the expiration of the 1994 AWB. The VPC's problem is that in the two year period over which the study was conducted, there was no such increase." ...

"As such, do newspapers really need to print everyday? Isn't once a week, say Sunday, ... enough for most people? Surely such a law wouldn't unduly infringe on the freedom of the press, while doing wonders to save the environment. Indeed, making sure newspapers can print only once a week, or better yet, once a month, may actually save lives!"

As a result of the gun control experiment, crime ran rampant and the citizenry was easy pickings for the criminals who had no qualms about breaking the law to be armed." ...

Ohio at odds with Cleveland and Columbus in major gun case

"Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray and the city of Cleveland are at odds -- again -- over gun regulation, this time in a potentially groundbreaking gun-rights case before the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday."

"Cordray's position in support of the Second Amendment right to bear arms could ultimately make it tougher for cities to pass and enforce highly restrictive, local gun-control laws. If the high court agrees with positions taken separately by Corday and the National Rifle Association, it could 'handcuff' the ability of Cleveland, Columbus and cities nationwide to respond to gun-related violence, the cities' attorneys contended in a legal filing." ...

"Two years ago, the Supreme Court struck down parts of the District of Columbia's gun-control law. On Tuesday, the court will consider whether that decision should apply everywhere in the country, not just in the federal territory of the nation's capital."

"We disagreed strongly with the 2008 decision, which took an expansive and aggressive view of the right to bear arms. But there is an even broader issue at stake in the new case: The Supreme Courts muddled history in applying the Constitution to states and cities. It should make clear that all of the protections of the Bill of Rights apply everywhere." ...

On the other side, gun-rights groups have said the prohibition prevents law-abiding citizens from protecting themselves. They also point out that the illegal gun trade has continued to flourish in Chicago despite the ban."

"Both sides, however, agree on this much: McDonald v. Chicago will be a landmark case regarding the "right to keep and bear arms." As the nine justices decide whether the Second Amendment can be used to strike down gun restrictions on state and local levels, their opinion stands to have far-reaching impact." ...

"Gun owners are watching closely as the US Supreme Court takes up a pivotal debate about how far states and cities can go to regulate guns. All of it stems from a Chicago law banning guns. "The Second Amendment reads: 'A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.'"

"How does this protect Saturday night specials1, hunting rifles2, concealed weapons3? It doesn't, except through the eyes of the National Rifle Association."

"We have some 40,0004 murders in this U.S. every year in which a hand gun was used. In the UK and Japan there are less than 10 total on average where hand guns are banned5. If anything, automatic weapons should be allowed by the amendment but they are outlawed. Where do Saturday night specials fit in with a well-regulated militia?6"
-------

Submitter's Notes: 1Because it is not just the rich who have the right to self-defense, guns poor people can afford are the ones targeted by SNS bans.
2The vast majority of hunting rifles were developed from military rifles, and a militiaman might find it useful to be able to drop an enemy at 300 yards or more.
3Does that whole 'keep and bear' thing confuse you? You antis are in panty soiling hysterics over the open carry movement in CA (where the guns are unloaded), but they don't want us to carry concealed either.
4Um, yeah, the real number is 11,700 a year for the last eight years.
5The UK and Japan also have vastly fewer non-firearm homicides; correlation does not show causation, elementary logic.
6Because inexpensive pistols are all poor militiafolk can afford.

"In 2006, Harvey Jackson pleaded guilty to illegal drug distribution and firearm possession after he was caught selling cocaine out of his home. Two years later, when the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment protects a right to possess a firearm in the home for self-defense, however, Jackson challenged his conviction, arguing that the amendment guaranteed his right to keep a gun to protect himself while conducting his home drug enterprise.
