An anonymous blogger who uses the pseudonym Doe Publius knew he would stir controversy when, in July 2016, he published a tyrant registry listing the addresses and home phone numbers of 40 California lawmakers who supported a new gun control law in the state. ... The post was quickly picked up on another gun rights blog, and within days, several of the named lawmakers reported receiving threatening phone calls and social media messages. Californias legislative counsel responded by ordering that WordPress, the blogging platform Publius used, remove the post, citing a state law, based on safety concerns, that restricts publication of government officials personal information. |

Rep. Thomas Garrett is a freshman Republican congressman who represents Virginia's 5th district. But being a newbie from a socially conservative area isn't stopping him from going big and bold right out of the chute: He has just introduced a bill called the "Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2017." From his office:
If passed, this bill would take marijuana off the federal controlled substances listjoining other industries such as alcohol and tobacco.
Ed.: This is great news for gun-owners, as it would no longer be a bar to the RKBA. |

While at least 22 states have similar laws that say people can use force --- even deadly force --- to defend themselves from threats, Florida could soon be the only one that spells out that prosecutors have to prove defendants weren't acting in self-defense before taking someone to trial.
That's under a bill sponsored by Republican Sen. Rob Bradley, who says his legislation "isn't a novel concept."
"We have a tradition in our criminal justice system that the burden of proof is with the government from the beginning of the case to the end," he said. |

ORIGINAL STORY:
Big changes might be coming to Iowa law regarding guns, and how people can use them for self-defense.
A law called stand your ground is currently being debated in the Iowa Legislature. Stand your ground means if someone feels their safety or life is at risk, he or she can use deadly force. In other words, the person can fire a gun in self-defense. |

Floridians with concealed-weapons licenses would be able to carry firearms into areas now deemed gun-free under an array of measures that will be championed by Republican lawmakers during the first legislative session since mass killings at an Orlando nightclub and a Fort Lauderdale airport.
Proposals have been introduced to allow the more than 1.7 million people with concealed-carry licenses to bring guns to places such as college and university campuses, airport terminals and government meetings. |

State senators voted Wednesday to allow two new exemptions to Arizona laws which generally prohibit people from firing guns in populated areas.
HB 2022 approved by the Senate Government Committee spells out that people can use a special kind of small-caliber shot, one designed to kill snakes and small mammals at close range. Sen. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, said it provides residents with an option for self-defense or at least a method of pest control.
But the more far-reaching measure the same committee approved on the same 4-3 party-line vote would remove the chance that someone could be prosecuted for being criminally negligent in shooting off a weapon in city limits. |

President Donald Trump signed a measure yesterday striking down a gun control regulation that compromised the rights of a small group of people on the basis of being classified by the Social Security Administration as having a mental illness.
The bill has been widely misinterpreted and misunderstood, possibly deliberately so. Brian Doherty in early February noted how media and gun control advocates presented this bill as something that would put weapons in the hands of severely mentally ill people.
That's not what the initial regulation did at all, and Trump signing this measure doesn't actually give extremely mentally ill people the federal stamp of approval to go stockpile weapons. |

After two moves and five years, Piasa Armory owner Scott Pulaski said he is within a month of one of his most ambitious dreams - an indoor shooting range in Alton, which will be open to the public.
Pulaski started the brick-and-mortar business when he moved to 115 Market St. in Alton. He since moved just around the corner to have his storefront on Broadway, and most recently moved to a former car dealership, located at 3685 E. Broadway in Alton, near the border with East Alton in September 2016. Because of the spacious new location, Pulaski said the indoor shooting range of his dreams could be possible. |

Assemblyman Marc W. Butler, R-Newport, unveiled legislation Wednesday that repeals portions of the controversial SAFE Act throughout Upstate New York and Long Island.
The legislation would limit the SAFE Acts restrictions only to New York City, while rolling back this attack on the Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen throughout the rest of the state.
The repeal legislation was originally crafted for Upstate New York; however, it gained support from sportsmen on Long Island and Westchester, who asked the legislators to add their regions to the bill. |

State senators voted Tuesday to forever block cities from requiring background checks when people sell weapons at gun shows.
But they balked at opening public buildings to people with guns.
On a 14-16 vote the Senate killed legislation which would have allowed those who have a permit to carry a concealed weapon to bring them in to public buildings. Building operators could maintain that gun-free status only by installing metal detectors and hiring security guards. |

The Washington Posts new slogan Democracy Dies in Darkness is apt given all the pressures now reshaping journalism (some from the Oval Office), but then, when you consider how the Post treats a few highly polarizing issues, their new slogan at times can feel insincere.
If there are two sides to every story, then, when it comes to the Second Amendment at least, the Post has only been telling one of them. |

The new year has shaped up to be a busy one for NRA members, with pro-gun legislation introduced in dozens of state legislatures and Congress. Meanwhile, anti-gun activists are hoping to gain ground in their coastal strongholds like California and Massachusetts, as well as states like Nevada and New Mexico, where anti-gun politicians gained control of legislatures last November. Its hard to keep track of all the legislative activity, but thankfully NRA members have a couple of fantastic resources. |

I am writing this to all sportsman. We have what I believe to be a once in a lifetime opportunity in our country to protect our Second Amendment right to bear arms and to clarify our Second Amendment to own and carry a handgun legally in all states. Any citizen in possession of a license to carry firearms should be able to enjoy that right in all 50 states as they do in the state of issuance. We need every sportsman, man, woman and child to write your congressman, senators and the president to encourage them to support this bill. I would ask all hunting club presidents to encourage all members to write, all law enforcement officers to encourage all colleagues to write, all sportsman to tell your friends and relatives to write. |

For more than two years, Brian Keith Harville and his attorney have claimed the shooting death of John "Johnny" Rance Campbell was in self defense. On Monday, a judge agreed.
In an order issued at 8:24 p.m. Monday, Lawrence County Circuit Judge Mark Craig ordered all charges against Harville dismissed due to the Alabama Stand Your Ground law, which says if the defendant can prove by the preponderance of evidence he or she was acting in self defense, they could be immune from criminal prosecution.
Harville had been indicted for murder by a Lawrence County Grand Jury for the Oct. 27, 2014 shooting death of Campbell. |

A bill that would allow people to bring guns into the state Capitol is one step away from the governor's desk after a Senate panel advanced it Wednesday to the chamber's floor.
The State Affairs Committee voted 5-4 to approve the plan, which would allow people who have an enhanced permit to bring concealed handguns into the Capitol if they register beforehand with security. The proposal has advanced farther than at least two similar bills proposed last legislative session, but Gov. Dennis Daugaard's opposition to the legislation is a steep obstacle for supporters. |

A bill that would add Alabama to the list of states that allow people to carry a concealed handgun without a permit advanced through the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.
The committee voted 6-3 for the bill after a fiery public hearing with law enforcement officers largely opposing it and gun rights groups speaking in favor of it. The bill now moves to the Senate floor.
Proponents argued that Alabama is an open carry state, so requiring a permit to carry a handgun under a jacket or in a purse doesn't make sense.
"Alabama is already on open carry permit, which means a pistol can be carried openly," said bill sponsor Sen. Gerald Allen, R-Tuscaloosa. |
