The vast majority of teachers and students don't like the idea of guns in schools, Superintendent Nikolai Vitti of the Detroit Public Schools Community District said on Thursday, but Detroit Police Chief James Craig believes there should be exceptions.
Craig and Vitti did agree during a Detroit Policy Conference panel discussion Thursday that arming teachers is not the answer to the nation's struggle with school shootings.
"The difference in our country is the easy access to weapons," Vitti said. "Weapons are used to kill people. Why... are we allowing weapons to fall in the hands of children? ... I say adults in general, but especially children. Adding more guns increases likelihood they'll be used." |

The real effects of most gun laws are unknown due to a scarcity of evidence, a new and far-reaching systematic review of US gun policy finds.
The analysis, which was intended to seed the gun debate with nonpartisan data, did find credible evidence that child-access prevention laws reduce unintended firearm injuries to children. These laws, which require guns to be stored safely, also reduce self-injuries and suicides, say the researchers at RAND, a nonprofit research organization.
Access prevention laws reduce unintended firearm injuries to children and also reduce self-injuries and suicides, the evidence suggests, researchers at Rand found. |

If we want to do something about school safety in America, we need to get government out of it. No more new gun control laws from Washington. No more speeches from DC politicians. No more executive orders. No more legislation. No more bipartisan meetings about banning assault weapons, creating lists on the mentally ill, or abandoning due process. Its time for government to do what its supposed to do in a situation like thisnothing. |

Kansas legislators are considering "red flag" proposals to allow judges to temporarily confiscate guns from people deemed a safety risk and a measure designed to ensure that fugitives and domestic abusers are prosecuted for illegal gun possession.
While work on such issues could be seen as a shift in the political climate of a Republican-leaning state that's been friendly to gun-rights groups and their initiatives, it would not be a big one. Proposals to ban bump stocks, limit the sale of semi-automatic weapons or keep concealed guns off college campuses aren't being seriously considered this year. |

Those who seek to disarm law-abiding Americans who own guns in order to protect themselves and their families have ramped up their attack on the National Rifle Association, portraying it as an evil entity that manipulates businesses and government.
But the NRA is merely an association that represents the gun owners of America. The power and influence of the NRA is the power and influence of the freedom-loving people of this country. The NRA is not a lobbying group for the gun industry; it is a group that defends the right of Americans to keep and bear arms. |

Heres my advice to the mighty NRA you are tremendously misguided if you think the Second Amendment extends to assault weapons, machine guns, bump-stocks, etc. It does not, since it was written during the time of the musket. To all the self-serving weasels (politicians) at every state and federal level: find the courage to ban all assault weapons, and apply the death penalty (with no appeal) to those found guilty of selling such weapons. Then promote the national database for screening ALL applicants for gun ownership, including input from law enforcement agencies, mental health clinics and social work departments. |

So why in heavens name the debate about sales to any citizen, be that person age 18 or 80 of an assault type weapon or the fittings to render a weapon into assault capability? ONLY, and I stress ONLY, those in the work force who might need this weapon to perform their duties should be allowed to purchase such. That, I maintain, is a limited few: Any security force such as police, FBI, personal certified body guards (such as for the president), specialty guards (such as sensitive or dangerous materials or persons), and the active duty military when in combat. |

House Bill 2302, known as Blairs Law, establishes that A person commits the offense of unlawful use of a firearm if, with criminal negligence, he or she discharges a firearm within or into the limits of any municipality.
McGee, who filed the bill with the blessing of Shanahan-DeMoss, traveled to the Jackson County Courthouse on March 1 for the press conference about Blairs Law.
This bill will save lives, and we hope that we will get a hearing, and it passes out of committee, and it gets a vote on the Missouri House floor this session, said McGee.
McGee, a Kansas City Democrat, noted that the law will still protect lawful uses of guns, such as hunting, range shooting, or in self defense. |

Inside Pocono Pistol Range in Stroudsburg, more than a dozen women learned more about shooting pistols in Thursdays Ladies Night course.
Instructors say for the past few years, these classes have gotten more and more popular.
"We want everyone to be a responsible gun owner, we want them to learn safety, we want them to learn marksmanship and all the things that went with it. We're almost cultivating a new group of responsible gun owners, said Bob Snell, an instructor for Pocono Pistol Range. |

Know your enemy. She is 78 years old, less than five feet tall, earns $316,000 a year, packs heat in her purse and lives in Tallahassee. She is Marion Hammer, the Florida lobbyist for the National Rifle Association. Long ago she lived in Gainesville, while her husband studied building construction. Reporter Mike Spies devotes an article to her in the current (March 5) New Yorker magazine. Wyoming lawmakers have removed a provision from a "stand-your-ground" bill that sought to give initial immunity from arrest and prosecution to people who claim self-defense.
The Star-Tribune reports that the Wyoming senate's vote on Tuesday aligned the measure with current state law, which allows individuals to use force in self-defense but only if doing so is reasonable. |

While the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., has understandably spurred many emotional responses, one student at the University of South Carolina has taken the gun debate to new heights.
In an opinion piece published by the Daily Gamecock, Laurryn Thomas lectures Christians that giving up their guns is an action in accordance with biblical values. Her justification for more gun control is that the Bible paints Jesus as someone truly devoted to peace at all costs. |

In his recent opinion piece, American Enterprise Institute writer Marc A. Thiessen attempts to turn the tables on Americans who question the merit of the National Rifle Association and its adverse effects on safety in everyday society. He states that weapons such as the AR-15 are critical to Americans right to self-defense and that people who dont abide by that philosophy do not respect you or your gun rights. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970). |
