Hoffman said that records from Arizona, Idaho and Montana reveal that Bishop had a long history of illegal activity, including burglary, assault and drug-related arrests. He was wanted on arrest warrants in Arizona and Flathead County for theft and forgery, and had prior law enforcement alerts for violent tendencies and drug abuse.
Hoffman also said the homeowner has no criminal history, and at this point in the investigation he is classified as a victim. |

Michael Smith went outside shirtless after being awakened Tuesday morning, yelling at a tree removal company to get off his property.
The workers thought they saw a gun in his waistband and called police.
Smith, whod gone back to bed, was awakened again minutes later this time by Maine State Police at his front door, backed up by a group of troopers with assault rifles in his driveway. They were asking him via a megaphone to come out of his house.
Smith did have a gun. It was tattooed on his stomach.
No charges will be filed against Smith, but police said they always take reports of a gun or threat seriously. Several police standoffs with armed men have occurred in central Maine in recent years, some of them deadly. |

Police armed with assault rifles descended on a Maine man's home after members of a tree removal crew he'd told to clear off his property reported that he had a gun.
Smith, who works nights, was asleep when the tree crew contracted by a utility to trim branches near power lines, woke him up at about 10 a.m. Tuesday.
He went outside shirtless and yelled at the workers to leave. When he's not wearing a shirt, the tattoo looks like a gun tucked into his waistband |

Whether Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law is malevolent, misguided or merely misunderstood, it needs repair.
Fortunately, legislation that would clarify the law is gaining ground in the state Senate. House leaders, too, should get on board this much-needed update.
As reported Tuesday, the new bill (CS/SB 130) gained unanimous support from the Senate's Criminal Justice Committee. The measure would not repeal the controversial Stand Your Ground law; instead it would adjust it to address some of the unintended consequences that have emerged since the law's passage nearly a decade ago. |

Applications for concealed carry permits are on the rise in California, due in large part to a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling last month.
Shasta County is no exception.
That ruling effectively said requiring people to show good cause for wanting a concealed carry permit is an infringement on the right to bear arms. Now all it takes is a desire for self-defense.
...
According to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, there are more than 5,400 permits issued, making Shasta County one of the top issuing counties in the state. |

At the behest of the gun lobby, the Florida House is poised to pass two gun bills that would let people fire warning shots in the air but not get kicked out of school for biting pastries into the shape of firearms.
One of the bills represents a substantial expansion of Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law by providing legal protection for people who threaten the use of force with a firearm in self-defense, and then do not flee.
The other is a about a pastry. |

When will Democrats who describe themselves as pro-gun realize that they aren't fooling anyone?
Here's their latest deception. President Obamas nomination of Dr. Vivek Murthy to be surgeon general is in trouble, because the National Rifle Association decided that it was going to score the vote that is, let its members know which senators voted for someone they believe is a threat to people being able to own guns for self-defense. |

The mayors of Lorain Countys two largest cities have joined 81 other mayors opposing some changes to Ohios gun laws. Lorain Mayor Chase Ritenauer and Elyria Mayor Holly Brinda signed a letter from Mayors Against Illegal Guns. This month the group wrote to Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor and other state leaders to oppose House Bill 203.
The bill has passed in the Ohio House and has been assigned for committee review in the Ohio Senate.
...
The city leaders say the bill would endanger public safety by making Ohio the first new Stand Your Ground state since the dangerous effects of these laws received national attention, according to the mayors letter. |

Colorado has strict rules against guns in the classroom, but on Wednesday, students were taken to the guns to learn about them in a safe environment.
This week a non-profit organization called "Project Appleseed" is teaching students at PJ Craver Middle School of Colorado City an American history class about marksmanship skills. They actually took the students to a shooting range in Avondale to try out rifles. |

For a sense of how extreme some gun-rights advocates have become - and why Congress won't pass even modest firearms safety laws - consider what happened to history professor and longtime gun enthusiast Dick Metcalf. When he recently wrote in his Guns & Ammo column that the Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms" is not unlimited, Metcalf suddenly became the enemy.
Readers reacted in fury, and gun makers threatened an advertising boycott. The magazine quickly caved, firing Metcalf and apologizing in a way that sounded like the confessions the Chinese Communist Party used to extract from counter-revolutionaries. |

Much of yesterdays debate focused on whether the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committees addition of that amendment was legal. Opponents said it wasnt close enough to the intent of the original bill and therefore shouldnt have been attached.
A simple bill with good intentions was targeted by anti-Second Amendment advocates in the Legislature as a vehicle for their agenda. The bill, as amended, was a dramatic departure from the intent of the original bill and is clearly an attempt to further the discussion on universal background checks and scrutiny on gun owners, House Minority Leader Gene Chandler, a Bartlett Republican, said in a statement after the vote. |

A federal raid by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on a San Diego gun-parts store chain has prompted criticism that the primary purpose of the operation was to collect the names and addresses of customers.
Despite a temporary restraining order, ATF agents obtained a search warrant and raided four Ares Armor stores over the weekend, according to San Diegos KSWB-TV.
The ATF, which went to a judge privately to obtain the warrant, said it was investigating alleged violations of federal firearms laws that stemmed from the sale of a new plastic version of the 80 percent lowers of AR-15 rifles. |

Changes adopted Wednesday to a House bill expanding the scope of Floridas controversial stand your ground law would severely limit access to court records in the self-defense cases.
People found to have used justifiable force in a stand your ground hearing could apply to have all court records related to their case expunged and made unavailable to the general public, according to an amendment filed by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach.
Gaetz said the purpose of the amendment is to provide more privacy for those cleared of charges.
The point is to make sure that someone who appropriately uses the stand your ground defense doesnt have their life ruined by the use of that defense, Gaetz said. |

Tallahassee State Attorney Willie Meggs is railing against an NRA-backed provision in the bill that he insists would make a bad policy a lot worse. He says he opposes Stand Your Ground because Florida residents no longer feel they have the duty to retreat in a situation that could call for it. |
